Leading us to the state of omniscience, like a guide. From the Gandavyuha Sutra: "Spiritual friends are like a ferryman, for they liberate (us) from the great river of cyclic existence." As taught by many such (texts). Third, the explanation of the guru to be relied upon has two parts: 1. General, and 2. Specific. The first (general) also has two: 1. Classification, and 2. Characteristics. The first (classification) is: The general classification is ordinary beings, Bodhisattvas, Emanation Body, and Complete Enjoyment Body, correlated with one's own four stages. The general classification of spiritual friends is four-fold: ordinary beings, Bodhisattvas, Nirmanakaya (Emanation Body) of a Buddha, and Sambhogakaya (Complete Enjoyment Body). These are also correlated with one's own four stages: When one is a beginner, lacking the capacity to rely on Buddhas and Bodhisattvas abiding on the great bhumis, one relies on ordinary spiritual friends. When one's obscurations of karma are mostly exhausted, one is able to rely on Bodhisattva spiritual friends who abide on the great bhumis. When one abides at or above the great path of accumulation, one is able to rely on Nirmanakaya (Emanation Body) Buddha spiritual friends. When one abides on the great bhumis, one is able to rely on Sambhogakaya (Complete Enjoyment Body) spiritual friends. Among these (spiritual friends), when we beginners dwell in the dark house of karma and afflictions, let alone relying on the higher spiritual friends, we do not even (have) the mere sight of their faces. By encountering ordinary spiritual friends, their words, like a lamp, illuminate the path, and then one can meet the higher spiritual friends. Therefore, among all (spiritual friends), the greatest kindness is that of ordinary spiritual friends. Second (characteristics) are: The characteristics of an ordinary being (spiritual friend) possess eight, four, or two qualities. Since the (former) three types of spiritual friends are not beneficial to beginners, there is no need to mention their characteristics. Regarding the characteristics of ordinary spiritual friends, it is stated that they must possess eight, or four, or two qualities. The eight are: Possessing morality and extensive learning. Possessing realization and compassion. Fearless, patient.

possessing, without sorrow. possessing verbal actions. This is the meaning explained in the Bodhisattvabhumi, summarized. Fourth, extensive learning, vast teachings; great wisdom, able to cut off others' doubts; performing the actions of holy beings, their words are worthy of being held; manifesting the true nature of both defilements and purity, these four are explained in the Sutralamkara. Second, as stated in the Bodhisattvacaryavatara: Constantly upholding good spiritual friends, Skilled in the meaning of the Mahayana, The supreme conduct of a Bodhisattva, Will not be abandoned even for life. Thus, they are learned and possess vows. Next, the second part is a detailed explanation, also having two: 1. Classification; 2. Individual definitions. Firstly, the first part is: Pratimoksha, Bodhisattva, Tantra, these three in sequence. If classified according to the object from which the three Pratimoksha vows are taken, there are Pratimoksha, Bodhisattva, and Tantric Masters. Their definitions will also be explained in order, thus connecting. Next, the second part (4b) has three: 1. Pratimoksha; 2. Bodhisattva; 3. Explanation of Tantric Masters. Firstly, the first part is: Upadhyaya (Preceptor), Acarya (Master), Secret Instructor, Resident or Reading Master, these five. Among them, solely within the Vinaya tradition, there are also the Upadhyaya who bestows monastic and full ordination vows; the Acarya who performs the rituals; the secret instructor who secretly imparts teachings; the Resident or Reading Master, these four. If the Acarya for novice vows is added, it can also be said to be five. Their general definition, as stated in the Sum-brgya-pa: Possessing morality and knowing the Vinaya rituals, Compassionate towards the sick, and their retinue is pure, Diligently engaging in benefiting with Dharma and material things, Those who admonish at the proper time, these are praised as Gurus. That is, one who has been fully ordained for ten years, is faultless, and possesses morality, this is a factor of steadfastness; one who knows the Vinaya rituals of the Tripitaka without error, this is a factor of skill; compassionate towards sick disciples, and their own retinue is pure with morality; diligently engaged in benefiting sentient beings with two kinds of benefit: Dharma and material things; those who admonish all precepts at the proper time, this is a factor of benefit, such a one is praised as a qualified Pratimoksha Guru. Particular Upadhyaya.
