Many objects of perception will arise. \t\t\tChapter 2, Second Part [Relying Thereupon]: \t\t\tThose desiring liberation rely through offerings, veneration, service, and practice. \t\t\tThis has two aspects: intention and action. \t\t\tFirstly, from the Summary (Samgraha): \t\t\tTherefore, for one seeking supreme enlightenment, \t\t\tThe wise one, possessing strong intention, must overcome pride; \t\t\tJust as a multitude of sick people rely on a doctor for healing, \t\t\tOne should ceaselessly rely on a virtuous friend. \t\t\tAs stated, this means to serve and venerate without wavering, with a deeply rooted intention to seek the supreme state of unsurpassed liberation and enlightenment. \t\t\tSecondly, concerning action, the method of serving and venerating is also described in the Ornament of the Sutras (Sutra-alamkara): \t\t\tThrough offerings, veneration, and service, \t\t\tOne should rely on a virtuous friend through the gateway of practice. \t\t\tAmong these three meanings stated, the first, “to offer riches,” means that if one possesses food, clothing, and other necessities, and has ample resources, one should joyfully offer them according to the master's wishes. Furthermore, it is said that one must even offer one's children, spouse, and one's own body. \t\t\tThe sequence of “veneration” is to constantly engage in respectful conduct, such as prostrating upon seeing, rising (10a), and offering praise. One should not even step on the shadow of the master's body, let alone other things. Without permission, one should not step on or use his robes, cushion, personal belongings, shoes, mount, consort, and so forth. In the master's presence, one should avoid all disrespectful behaviors such as lying down, stretching out, spitting, blowing one's nose, or secretly speaking ill of him. \t\t\tSecondly, “to perform service” means to accomplish all immediate tasks, such as bathing, massaging, and wiping, with prostrations as a prelude, calmly, meticulously, and with attentiveness. \t\t\tThirdly, “to rely through the gateway of practice” means to readily implement all instructions given by the Lama, and to diligently practice listening, contemplating, and meditating on all taught Dharma in a fitting manner. This practice is superior to all previous forms of service and veneration, for it is through the offering of genuine virtuous practice that a virtuous friend is pleased, not merely through material offerings and so forth. \t\t\tMoreover, in the Avatamsaka Sutra (Gandavyuha chapter), it is said: “You should never grow weary in seeking a virtuous friend. Having found one, you should also practice according to their guidance.”

One should perform service without forgetfulness. One should generate the perception of being like the earth, not growing weary of all burdens. One should generate the perception of being like a servant, listening to whatever is commanded. And so forth, it was said. Seventh, the necessity of relying in such a way has two (parts): 1. Establishing the necessity through reasoning; 2. Citing scriptural passages on the benefits. First (part 1) is: Pure conduct, complete, unmixed, perfectly pure, Now rely on me, the spiritual friend, from suffering, The Victorious One said, 'Look to the reasoning of liberation.' By relying on the virtuous spiritual friend, one will achieve complete and unmixed pure conduct, attaining perfect purity (page 10b) and utmost spotlessness. And now, by relying on me, the virtuous spiritual friend, one will effortlessly be liberated from the suffering of cyclic existence; look to this reasoning or example – thus the Victorious Teacher, the Compassionate One, perfectly taught and admonished. From the Sutra: Ananda, this is how it is: the virtuous spiritual friend and the virtuous companion are perfectly pure conduct. Thus it was said. From the 'Letter to a Friend' (Suhrllekha): Relying on a virtuous spiritual friend is pure conduct, The Sage said it is perfectly complete. Therefore, One should rely on a virtuous spiritual friend; having relied on a spiritual friend, Many have attained peace. Thus. Second (part 2) [citing scriptural passages on benefits] is: Furthermore, the benefits of relying on a spiritual friend are numerous. Besides this, in various Sutras and Tantras, the immeasurable benefits of relying on a virtuous spiritual friend are taught extensively. From the Gaṇḍavyūha Sutra (Array of Trunks): Bodhisattvas who are perfectly sustained by virtuous spiritual friends do not fall into lower realms. They do not comprehend unwholesome actions. They turn away from states of heedlessness. They are extracted from the city of samsara. They do not transgress the Bodhisattva precepts. They are manifestly superior to all worlds. They are difficult to be overcome by karma and defilements. Son of noble family, therefore, with continuous mindfulness, one should go to the presence of virtuous spiritual friends. This indicates, by way of example, the summarized meaning of these scriptural passages. From the mouth of the Omniscient Drime Özer (Künkhyen Drimé Özer): The qualities of relying on a guru are immeasurable, To grasp the correct path, to adopt and abandon, to perceive...
