The eight subsidiary downfalls, by means of the seven applications, likewise become heavy downfalls and misdeeds. When it is seen to be for the benefit of others, etc., for a great purpose, or leads to obstacles, or permission has been obtained, or one is sick and unable, etc., these are mere appearances of downfalls. It is stated in the “Heart Ornament” that there is no fault. (90b) Alternatively, it is also explained as five limbs: the limb of the basis is having obtained and not degenerated the vow; the limb of the object is that it is the Lama and so forth; the limb of intention is a shameless engagement, the antidote not having reached the actual act, and no regret afterwards but rather rejoicing; the limb of preparation is having actually engaged in the action; the limb of completion is that and that being completed. This has the same meaning as the former. The causes for these to arise are also from the Tantra of Vows: Ignorance and heedlessness, Many afflictions and disrespect, Forgetfulness, unclear mindfulness, These six are the causes of vow degeneration. As stated, if one strives to abandon the causes, the result will naturally be prevented. Generally, the Samaya of Secret Mantra is of great profit and danger, and extremely crucial. If the first root downfall, transgressing the Samaya of the Vajra Master, occurs, even if other Samayas are kept, it is like a tree with its roots cut. Therefore, there is no other way than not transgressing the Lama's Samaya. Second, [Restoration] is: (P2) The twenty-five restorations arise from the Heart Ornament. Generally, after a downfall has occurred, restoration is necessary. Its method is also: for one who has merely obtained empowerment, by reciting as many times as the number of deities in the mandala, 36,000 times, and possessing the resolve not to do it again, the seven empowerments are given again. For one who has obtained the unique Vase and Secret Empowerments, it is said that after having practiced the injunctions taught by the Master, empowerment should be received again. The twenty-five types of injunctions or restorations to be practiced, which arise from the Heart Ornament, are: Confessing to the field of accumulation, extensively practicing the mantra of repentance; Washing outer and inner with water, burning seed syllables with wrathful deities; Meditating on the meaning of unborn, taking the four outer and inner empowerments; Confessing in assembly, reciting repentance to the supports. (91a) Offering mandalas and so forth, erecting stupas of Sugatas; Purifying with peaceful fire, offering...
