It is explained that doubting the ultimate truth among the two truths is the eleventh root downfall. Here, the former refers to a mistaken understanding regarding the conventional truth, which is that all phenomena are merely appearances without inherent nature, like a moon in water, and are dependently originated. For instance, considering it contradictory that sentient beings can become Buddhas, or that Buddhas have no discursive thoughts and possess omniscient wisdom. Specifically, not believing or doubting emptiness, the general meaning of the pure dharma, and accepting elaborations, becomes a root downfall. The factors are: The object factor is the emptiness of the pure dharma. The intention is not believing and accepting elaborations. The latter two factors are similar, completing the four. The tenth (root downfall) is: Generally, this means practicing love towards malicious beings who cannot be subdued by love, such as maras, tirthikas, and arrogant opponents. Specifically, engaging in hypocritical and deceptive love towards sentient beings primarily involved in karma-mudra, where one's words and intentions do not align, results in a downfall. The factors are: The object factor is sentient beings primarily involved in mudra. The intention is malicious with sweet words, practicing deceptive love. The latter two factors are similar, completing the four factors. Alternatively, as mentioned above, if malicious sentient beings should be subdued by fierce activity, and one fails to do so, it is said to be a downfall. However, here, it must be applied to the adversaries of the third empowerment, thus this very point. The eleventh (root downfall) is: Generally, this means to superimpose or deny (86 verso) the object that transcends conventional expressions. That is, not realizing that all phenomena are suchness, the dharma nature, and that the dharma nature alone is the true nature of all phenomena. Instead, one makes definitive judgments of existence, non-existence, being, non-being, etc., with a discursive, intellectual mind. Specifically, to have discursive thoughts and doubt towards the immutable bliss, which is the nature of the Buddha's body, speech, and mind, transcending all worldly examples and free from names; and towards the emptiness of all aspects of appearance, which is the very nature of that bliss-giving female (wisdom). The factors are: The object factor is the immutable bliss that is not changing and not permanent. The intention is to realize ultimate reality differently from that. The latter two factors are similar, completing the four factors. The twelfth (root downfall) is: Generally, this means not to discourage faithful sentient beings. If one acts contrary to faithful mantra practitioners, it is a downfall. Summary.

And if one regresses from the Śrāvaka vehicle, if serious, it is a root downfall; if a temporary regression, it is said to be a transgression. Specifically, pure sentient beings, internally abiding in the wisdom of reality-as-it-is, whose external conduct is not fixed. If one, out of jealousy, slanders and debases them, it becomes a root downfall. The branches are: the object is a pure sentient being, the intention is jealousy, the speech is debasement, and the latter two branches are similar, thus completing the four. The thirteenth (downfall) is: during the time of practice, such as a Gaṇachakra or the feast of vīras and vīriṇīs, regarding the outer and inner five meats and five nectars, and other objects of reliance and samayas, if one merely adheres to the vows of the Śrāvaka vehicle, thereby doubting and abandoning them, it becomes a root downfall. The branches are: it is the time for practicing the samaya, one abandons the samayas of reliance, and the latter two branches are as before, thus completing the four. The fourteenth (downfall) is: towards women in general (as the object), if one speaks slanderous words with malicious intent, it becomes a downfall. The branches are: the object is women in general (86b), the intention is to speak slanderous words with malice, and the latter two branches are similar to this, thus completing the four. Here, the generally explained (contents) are according to the commonly accepted methods of exposition of the Unsurpassed (Yoga Tantra). Specifically, the aforementioned (root downfalls) are as taught in the Kālachakra Tantra. They appear in the same number in the Vajrahṛdayālaṃkāra and the Black and Red Yamāntaka Tantra. In the Vajraḍāka Tantra, however, it is stated as thirteen. Regarding these fourteen root downfalls, by differentiating through object, intention, preparation, time, transgression, and frequency, there are eighty-four classifications based on six categories. Furthermore, by converting with the three (degrees) of heavy, medium, and light, they become two hundred and fifty-two vows for vidyādharas, as explained by the master Mañjuśrīkīrti. 2. The second part [subsidiary downfalls] is: The eight subsidiary (downfalls) are: Relying on a vidyā without samaya, Disputing in the assembly, receiving nectar in unfitting places. Not speaking at due time, answering queries with scorn. Unknowing while among śrāvakas, yet presuming to be a mantrika. Disclosing secrets to the unfit; such are numerous ways of generation. The eight subsidiary (downfalls) corresponding to the fourteen root (downfalls) are: not having received empowerment, or having received it but having violated it, thus having no samaya; being unable to keep secrets; oneself not being (qualified)
