Unless it is for (altruistic) purposes, abandoning all unwholesome actions is the "discipline of vows". Drawing near to noble ones, etc., and within that scope, making offerings to yogis. Practicing the Ten Virtues of Mahayana, which are of the same essence as the Six Perfections, is the "discipline of gathering wholesome dharmas". Being free from the four opposing factors that are contrary to Mahayana—namely, attachment to the Hinayana, turning away from the welfare of others, abandoning samsara, and clinging to nirvana—is the "discipline of benefiting sentient beings". Not disparaging devas, asuras, yakshas, etc.; not treading upon vajras and other mudras, the guru's vehicles, insignias, weapons, and the symbols of deities; and, since lower vows are subsumed within higher vows, also upholding the common vows of the Paramitayana and the Kriya and Charya Tantras—this is the latter, and in brief, these are adopted from the proclaimed teachings. Padkar Zhap stated: The fourteen practices of samaya (commitments) that accord with one's buddha-family, and the fourteen root downfalls that are contrary to these, as well as the branch downfalls indicated by phrases such as "You shall not kill living beings," and the practical samayas of the previously mentioned five deities—these are summarized into three categories. Generally, in the Yoga Tantras, the enumeration of samayas and downfalls is extremely vast, making it impossible to summarize them definitively. Upholding all four sets of trainings, such as the fourteen aspects of abandonment and practice (what to reject and what to cultivate) as explained thus, is attained through acceptance (commitment); while the ten root downfalls, etc., are considered vows attained through ritual (77b). If (the commitments) are damaged, the method for restoration is as stated previously, and also incorporates what is explained in the forthcoming "Essence Ornament." D4: Fourth, explaining the Samaya of Unsurpassed Yoga (Anuttarayoga), divided into three parts: N1. Extensively explaining the establishment of Samaya. N2. Presenting other classifications and summaries. N3. Explaining the measure of damaged commitments and the methods for restoration. N1: The first part has two points: P1. Brief exposition. P2. Extensive explanation. P1: The first point is: Unsurpassed ascetic vows, samayas are three. The vows received through the empowerment of Unsurpassed Yoga, which must be upheld, are: the Vajra ascetic conduct, the vows of each buddha-family, and the root and branch samayas. There are these three categories of what to adopt and what to abandon. P2: The second part is:

Three. 1. Ascetic practices/Vows. 2. Precepts/Pledges. 3. Explanation of Samaya/Commitment. First, initially: Ascetic practices are individually taught with specific aims, Gathered within, four are taught, contemplating the five Buddha families. Subduing ordinary actions and discursive thoughts, entering the conduct of Vajrasattva through the three gates of body, speech, and mind, is explained as the beginning of the unsurpassable samaya. Furthermore, in each tantra, these are taught specifically according to their distinct traditions. In the Glorious Guhyasamaja Tantra, regarding the ascetic practices of the generation stage, it speaks of the great fleshy body, feces, and urine. Embracing semen and blood, namely the three Vajras, or alternatively, it is taught to rely upon the five nectars as the samaya of the five families. In the completion stage, one trains in the method of gathering these five aggregates into clear light. From the Fourth Chapter of the Tantra: Whatever being takes life, Whatever being delights in speaking falsehoods, Whatever being is attached to others' possessions, Whatever being constantly engages in desirous conduct. Thus, these four samayas taught with intention are explained as: if one abides in the generation stage, for the benefit of others, these should indeed be practiced. If one abides in the completion stage (78a), obstructing the winds is "taking life"; speaking Dharma through understanding the stages of dependent origination is "speaking falsehoods"; accomplishing through the power of the Buddha's wisdom mudra is "taking what is not given"; and engaging in the desire for the suchness of dharmata is "engaging in desirous conduct." Even beginners should uphold these with faith and cultivate the accumulation of merit. Chakrasamvara's twenty-two celibacies, eight Vidyas (wisdom consorts). In the root tantras of Chakrasamvara and other treatises, the "twenty-two celibacies" mentioned are those that most early noble beings upheld by combining the fourteen root downfalls and eight branch major downfalls, which will be explained later. The uncommon ascetic practices include: the Tenth Day Offering, Hand Offering, the Offering of the Definitive Meaning of the Four Vajras, relying on the Four Mudras, Offering to Heroes and Yoginis, Symbolic Conduct, and the Eight Uncommon Samayas, etc. Among these, the Tenth Day Offering is further subdivided into the Offering to Maidens and Family Dakinis, Outer Offering, large/small Torma rituals, and many other aspects. The latter precepts are: all of the left...
