Act ignorantly, Cling to distinctions and lax reverence, Do not accomplish mudra, separate from mudra, Degenerate conduct and defile samaya substances. This is said: First, this refers to the conduct of the left. In ordinary times, if one does not recollect the four times, and if it is not done during special times such as tsok and hand offerings, it is a transgression. Second, not for the purpose of cultivating the path, empowerment, essence extraction, or samaya substances, but solely due to craving for women who seek semen, if one engages in mudra, it is a transgression. Third, this is clinging to self and others as distinct. All phenomena must be maintained equally in the nature of emptiness without conceptualization (78b), and if that is not recollected during the four sessions, it is a transgression. Fourth, by having faith in other paths, reverence for this path becomes lax, or one regards it as flawed, generating doubt, and thus not diligently engaging in its practice, it is a transgression. Fifth, possessing the ability to bind the bindu and maintain in bliss-emptiness, one should rely on mudra; if not relied upon, it is a transgression. Sixth, having begun to accomplish wisdom by relying on action mudra, if the wisdom of great bliss is not stabilized, and until the results of the path, such as conduct, are actualized, one should not separate from the mudra companion; if separated, it is a transgression. Seventh, through the path of mudra, by means of the practice of downward expulsion and upward retraction of the bodhicitta kundala, one does not fall back and stabilizes it immovably at the crown. Other than during special times like secret empowerment, if one causes the bindu to leak, it is a transgression. Eighth, substances like sinhagapura (red saffron) and fragrant water originating from the bhaga of the wisdom consort should be eaten and relied upon. If, with an impure mind, one does not eat them and mentally abandons them, it is a transgression. These are mantra-born, born, and co-emergent. Merely by abiding in the path of the three messengers, they must be primarily accomplished, hence they are known as the eight ascetic practices relying on the vidya (consort). From the Ghur [Tantra]: The fourteen explicit statements delight the guru. From the Vajra Tent Tantra, it is stated that there are fourteen practices for beginners. Summary: Do not abandon the Three Jewels, practice the samayas.

Hold the vajra and bell, and scripture on the crown. Diligently engage in the consecration work of the fire offering mandala. Offer tormas to spirits, and strive in recitation and meditation. Teach Dharma to disciples, and gather sentient beings with loving-kindness. Accumulate merits for the Victorious Ones, offer water to the Jambhala tree (or earth deities). Construct stupas and tsatsas, perform virtuous deeds. Thus it is stated. (79n) In the Abhidharma/Mahayana-sutralamkara, nine types of conduct are taught: daily conduct, the true conduct of offering, secret and abandoned conduct, the conduct of a wise messenger, the conduct of mantra recitation, the conduct of reverence for the field, the conduct of ascetic practices, the conduct of reading and contemplation, and the conduct of firm accomplishment through blessings. Thus, nine types are taught. Especially in the Kalachakra, there are twenty-five (vows). The five precepts to be observed are the four root vows plus alcohol. Specifically, in the Kalachakra Tantra, twenty-five Vajrasattva vows are taught. Firstly, the five precepts to be observed are the four root vows plus alcohol. Regarding the meaning expressed by “non-harming” and “non-lying” etc.: Harming: Not to mention harming humans or human-like beings, even to an ant, one must fundamentally cease all harming. Non-lying: Not to mention claiming to be a lama or a human Buddha, one must not lie even for a joke. Sexual misconduct: Whether one has taken the vow of celibacy or not, one must completely abandon all objects of sexual misconduct, such as other people’s spouses. Stealing: Not to mention stealing valuable possessions, one must not take even a sesame husk as one’s own. These are the four root vows. Regarding alcohol consumption, consuming it for the sake of samaya (vow) or for the path of meditation is not forbidden. However, those (drinks) that lead to madness and invite obstacles must be abandoned. These five upasaka precepts are definite in nature and expansive in motivation, and are thus called the five heightened transgressions. If one is able and willing to observe these, then the remaining twenty ascetic practices are to be given: Not gambling, not eating (meat), not speaking harsh words, not (associating with) spirits, Not believing in the doctrines of barbarians/outsiders; these are five things not to be done. Not beating animals, children, men, or women, not damaging stupas. Not deceiving gurus, masters, Buddhas, or the Sangha. Not clinging to form, sound, smell, taste, or touch. Not beating, etc., are the foundation of all vows and precepts.
