Furthermore, (79b) regarding gambling: it refers to indulging in it, exceeding proper time, and thereby harming virtuous deeds. Non-food, meaning forbidden food such as meat from animals killed for profit and consumption, etc., constitutes wrong livelihood incompatible with the Dharma. Reciting evil words refers to speaking about wars, robbers, kings, etc. The Dharma of spirits refers to ancestor worship and the like, originating from the Vedas, as well as performing animal sacrifices for the sake of higher realms. The Dharma of barbarians refers to those who observe necessary vows, which are the five non-culpable transgressions. Harming cattle and other animals, children, men, women, and damaging stupas, learned individuals (monastics), and the three supports of the Three Jewels (representations of Buddha's body, speech, and mind) are the five killings. The reason these (killings) are mentioned separately from general harm is because they contradict the observance of vows/disciplines. Harboring ill will towards beneficial friends in both Dharma and worldly life, respected leaders, officials, elders, etc., in both worldly and spiritual ways, the Buddha (teacher of gods and humans), the Sangha, and trustworthy lamas—these are the five animosities. From the eye's attachment to forms to the body's attachment to tactile objects, these are the five attachments that complete the karma capable of projecting future rebirth. Furthermore, for the latter ones as well, by applying these words, there are three sets of five, such as 'non-harming,' etc. All together, these twenty-five vows form the foundation of all commitments and precepts. Moreover, these twenty-five vows/disciplines are those that must necessarily be observed prior to empowerment. Although the preceding ones are not necessarily so (mandatory before empowerment), it is convenient to explain them together here. Furthermore, most of these (vows), even if one has not attained the actual empowerment, must be observed merely by entering the mandala. Therefore, they are mentioned first. (80a) Second, the explanation of the vows to be accomplished is divided into two parts: 1. Common vows; 2. Uncommon vows. First (Common vows) are: The common vows, five or six types, are: Akshobhya mudra and precious lama, Ten kinds of giving, ten foods in the chakra, Offering to the sword, vow of restraint in the lotus, Vajrasattva, bodhicitta, of literal and definitive meaning (two). Here, what is to be practiced...

The precepts of abstention are vows. The precepts of abandoning what should be rejected are samaya. These are the established traditions. There is also the tradition of reversing this understanding, and the tradition of considering the two as synonyms, thus making three traditions in total. In reality, all are not contradictory, but for ease of explanation, we will follow the former. Regarding the meaning of the word 'vow' (sdom pa): from the word Sambara, its meaning is to bind the three ordinary gates (body, speech, mind) along with their imprints, through special skillful means and wisdom, into the essence of the four vajras. In this regard, the common five families of tantra and the general and specific vows have been mentioned above. The word 'am' (འམ་) is a particle that separates the following phrase. Here, the samayas of the six Buddha families taught in the glorious Kālacakra also have two aspects: Firstly, according to the provisional meaning: Akṣobhya (the Immovable One), belonging to the family of the five-pronged vajra. The vajra mind is emptiness; the bell speech is great compassion; the mudra is the deity's body – the secret of body, speech, and mind, the essence of never departing from the enlightened body, speech, and mind of all Tathāgatas, existing from the very beginning. This is the foundational samaya. Secondly, as the yogi's mind progresses, recognizing the body, speech, and mind as the three vajras, and being devoted to yoga is 'grasping' (or 'holding'). This is established on the basis of proximate causes, and the principal co-operative condition is the Guru. Therefore, one must rely on the Guru in all aspects; this is the samaya that must not be transgressed. To hold this as paramount and rely on it with suppressed pride (80b) is the meaning of 'grasping' (or 'holding'). The characteristic vajra and bell as symbolic signs, hand mudras, and the five bone ornaments, etc., are also to be held properly. The ten types of giving in the Jewel Family are: Jewels, iron, copper, cattle, horses, Elephants, maidens, territories, Desired consorts, one's own flesh, These are considered the ten types of giving. From these, beginners should give what they can actually give, and what they cannot give, they should make an object of aspiration. The samaya of the mandala, including the samaya of consuming the five meats, five nectars, etc., and food suitable for the Dharma and agreeable to yogic practice: For the sake of camphor, its essence, Meat should always be eaten. Especially alcohol. (Incomplete)
