Also from the *Wrathful Tantra*: First, Pratimokṣa vows are given. To them, the Dharmas of the Śrāvakas are taught. Then, the great Bodhisattva vows are given. To them, the Dharmas of the Madhyamaka are explained. Finally, the tantra of the result, the great vehicle's Empowerment-giving result tantra, is taught. Thus it appears. Regarding the latter, it is held that merely possessing the uncommon Mahayana refuge and bodhicitta vows in one's mental continuum is sufficient to receive empowerments and samayas. The second part [specifically explaining the actual vows] has seven points: 1. The nature of the Mantrayana vows; 2. Their divisions; 3. The method of obtaining them; 4. The time for obtaining them; 5. The distinctions between higher and lower vows and how they converge; 6. The basis for their generation; 7. The actual explanation of the samayas. The first point is: Its nature is the vow that includes the transformation of grasped and grasping, United with the method of great bliss wisdom, with mental concomitance. In short, it is the discipline of the three doors combining skillful means and wisdom. The nature of the Mantrayana vow is that which is to be restrained, the habitual tendencies of the transformation of grasped and grasping conceptions; the means of restraint is by vowing to uphold the great bliss wisdom and cultivating its methods, accompanied by a congruent mind (page 69 recto), which manifests from its respective causal empowerments. Although the four classes of tantras have differences in the profundity of their methods for actualizing wisdom, there is no difference in the wisdom to be actualized. Therefore, all the meanings of empowerments, apart from their scope, are considered to be great bliss wisdom. In short, that which is to be restrained is the subtle habitual tendencies of the three doors; the means of restraint is the mind accompanied by its seeds, grasped by special skillful means and wisdom; it is the newly obtained vow of discipline from its causal empowerment. Here, the "knowledge" (vidya) of the Vidhyadhara vow is the non-dual grasped and grasping, supreme unchanging great bliss wisdom; it is to hold this very nature, which is primordially established, by way of re-clarification, and to establish the vow through the means of the deity's form or the blessings of wisdom—this is a unique characteristic of the Mantrayana vehicle. Furthermore: Conventional and ultimate, possessing form, Bodhicitta is supremely generated. Thus, in addition to what is common with the Paramita vehicle: Conventional (bodhicitta) is like the Kumuda flower, Ultimate (bodhicitta) is of great bliss...

That which has form. Thus, by the appearance of great bliss arising from the sphere of bodhicitta and its stability, one should also understand the particularly supreme vows of secret mantra. Second, concerning the classification, there are three. First, based on the conveyed meaning of the tantra; second, based on the four classes of tantra that convey it; third, based on the ritual for attainment. First, it is thus: Classification of conveyed meaning: cause, means, and result, three. All phenomena of appearance and sound are primordially co-emergent wisdom, And coarse and subtle conceptualizations are taken into generation and completion stages, One's own appearance is gathered into the nature of kāya and wisdom. Although there are many classifications of mantra vows, here, for now, if classified according to the conveyed meaning of the tantra, there are three types of mantra vows: cause tantra, means tantra, and result tantra (69b). First, it is to gather all phenomena of appearance and sound into the state of naturally co-emergent wisdom. Second, it is to gather all coarse and subtle conceptualizations of dualistic appearance into the yoga of generation and completion stages. Third, it is to gather all phenomena that appear as one's own appearance into the nature of kāya and wisdom. The former is the imputed mantra vow, and the latter two are the definitive ones. Second, [classification based on the four classes of tantra that convey it] is thus: Conveying: Kriyā, Caryā, Yoga, Anuttara, four. If classified based on the four classes of tantra that convey it, there are four types of mantra vows: Kriyā (action) tantra, Caryā (conduct) tantra, Yoga tantra, and Anuttarayoga (unsurpassable yoga) tantra. First, it is to vow to hold the great bliss wisdom that, through the path of the bliss of laughing, eradicates the conceptualizations of subject-object apprehension and the subtle habitual tendencies of transference. Second, it is to vow to hold similarly, through the path of the bliss of gazing. Third, it is to vow to hold similarly, through the path of the bliss of holding hands. Fourth, it is to vow to hold similarly, through the path of the bliss of the union of the two faculties. Thus, as an antidote to the four coarse and subtle conceptualizations of subject-object apprehension to be abandoned by the common vehicle, and the four coarse and subtle habitual tendencies of transference to be abandoned by the uncommon secret mantra, through the classification of four different rituals, to vow to hold the great bliss wisdom of non-dual subject-object apprehension, this is the four classes of tantra...
