[Defining the Nature] is: The nature is the wisdom of the Arya's (Noble Ones') meditative equipoise. The nature is: The Bodhicitta that has become the undifferentiated essence of the Arya-Bodhisattva's meditative equipoise and the Buddha-ground's equal exchange, which is the wisdom that directly perceives the non-conceptual ultimate reality (Dharmata). The incomparable Gampopa said: "Then, what is the ultimate Bodhicitta like?" (He answered): "It is that which has the essence of emptiness and compassion, is clear and unwavering, and is free from the marks of elaboration (Prapañca)." Chapter 3, Third [Defining the Divisions] is: The divisions of aspects, from the first Bhumi (ground) and so forth. Although there is no division in the essence of emptiness, from the perspective of the manner of its arising, there are many divisions: from the realization of the first Bhumi (ground), and including "etc." up to the Buddha-ground. Chapter 4, Fourth [Defining the Ritual] is: There are two traditions: arising through ritual and not arising through ritual. As for the ultimate Bodhicitta itself, the Dharma-lord Jigten Sumgön (Lord of the Three Worlds) and others, relying on the scriptures of the Tantras and Sutras, assert that it arises through ritual. If what is stated in the Tantras arises through ritual, then what is stated in the Sutras also arises, just like the Pratimoksha (individual liberation) vow ritual. In Tantra, ultimate Bodhicitta exists, but its conventional designation is not explicitly taught, because ultimate Bodhicitta is widely known in the Bodhicitta of Chandravajra. If it is argued that these are merely concordant with the path and do not actually arise, and therefore do not possess that conventional designation, then with respect to the Bodhicitta in the Bodhicaryavatara, they practice it with similar intentions. For example, if a mere Pratimoksha vow is later accompanied by renunciation, it is considered a genuine vow. Similarly, with the Bodhisattva vows, the initially arisen essence of virtuous mind, when it truly enters the path of accumulation, the mind and mental factors as a whole transform into the essence of the vow, thus the aspiration and engagement Bodhicitta are considered genuine. Here, through the power of ritual, the continuum of non-conceptual wisdom, made an object of the mind, is later directly realized through the ripening of virtuous roots; this is similar. Sakya Pandita said: "Ultimate Bodhicitta arises through the power of meditation, not through ritual. If it were to arise through ritual, it would become merely conventional, which is inappropriate. One should practice ultimate Bodhicitta." Although such a statement exists, (text cut off)...

It is merely an arrangement, not a ritual, as it has been taught. The followers of Ngari Panchen also maintain that this bodhicitta does not arise from ritual. Thus, there appear to be two traditions. However, these are not contradictory. The former implies that even a merely similar (consonant) bodhicitta can be generated through ritual, while the latter refers to the inability to generate the definitive (characteristic) bodhicitta through ritual—this is their intent. Therefore, it is not reasonable for followers to definitively conclude that bodhicitta cannot arise from ritual. This is because the fourth empowerment's wisdom arises merely through words, and the ultimate bodhicitta is said to arise through ritual—both statements possess equivalent reasoning and means of proof. Chapter 5 [Identifying the Nature]: The bodhicitta (66b) embraced by the three excellences, Is the wisdom that directly perceives the dharmadhātu. If one asks what the actual nature of ultimate bodhicitta is, in Tantra, it is explained as the wisdom free from the duality of apprehension and apprehender. Although there appear to be many subtle and gross explanations according to different masters. However, according to the Pāramitāyāna, in the *Sūtrālaṃkāra*, it is stated: Having greatly pleased the perfect Buddhas, Having perfectly accumulated the collections of merit and wisdom, Undiscriminating wisdom regarding the Dharma Is born; therefore, it is considered supreme. Here, the "bodhicitta embraced by the three excellences" refers to the bodhicitta embraced by the excellence of support (pleasing the perfect Buddhas), the excellence of aspiration (accumulating collections of merit and wisdom), and the excellence of realization (directly perceiving the dharmadhātu). In the stages of the Path of Accumulation and Path of Preparation, by means of the proximate cause of pleasing the perfect Buddhas, and through the power of accumulating the collections of merit and wisdom over countless eons, at the first bhūmi (ground), the wisdom that directly perceives the reality of the selflessness of phenomena arises spontaneously. This is what the wise establish as ultimate bodhicitta. Chapter 7 [Explaining the Qualities and Faults of Transgression and Non-transgression]: If transgressed, there are four faults; if not transgressed, there are eight merits, and so forth. It is the source of all temporary and ultimate benefit and happiness. If the Bodhisattva vows are transgressed, countless faults are proclaimed. Generally, there are four: three general and one specific. Among these, the three general faults of transgression are: deceiving the Teacher, the Buddha; deceiving sentient beings, the object; and deceiving oneself, the practitioner. By breaking the promise, one becomes an object of scorn for all. And like a king who loses his kingdom, the essence (of the path)
