If held (to worldly concerns), it becomes merely a worldly good deed; if wisdom is accompanied, then generosity and all other (64b) are called transcendent perfections (paramitas) beyond the world. Third, explaining the morality of working for the benefit of others. Practice the four means of attracting sentient beings, etc. One should ripen one's own continuum through gathering virtuous Dharma, and then practice the four means of attraction for the morality of working for the benefit of sentient beings. Namely: generosity, kind speech, beneficial action, and acting in accord. In order to gather disciples who have not yet assembled into the retinue, first, one pleases them with material generosity; this is the first. Having gathered into the retinue, gradually guide their minds with kind speech, teach the sacred Dharma, and cause them to generate an earnest aspiration and enthusiasm for its practice; this is the second. Just as a child is gradually nurtured with soft and coarse foods, a single Dharma cannot ripen those with different inclinations, therefore, one leads them to practice Dharma that is appropriate for the minds of the disciples; this is the third. In order to lead those sentient beings to the sacred Dharma and virtuous conduct, one oneself also studies in accord with that purpose; this is the fourth. And so forth, from among those, one should willingly undertake by way of accomplishing the aforementioned eleven counteracting factors for the benefit of sentient beings. Chapter 3, Third, explaining the method of how to guard the two trainings of aspiration (bodhicitta) and engagement (bodhicitta), thereby concluding the engagement. Mindfulness and introspection, guard the mind and trainings. One should guard the mind by relying on three: mindfulness, which is the non-forgetfulness of the mind to constantly guard the methods as explained; introspection, which discerns whether faults have arisen in one's own continuum or not; and conscientiousness, which diligently applies oneself to carefully guarding the points of engagement and disengagement. Specifically, with regard to the arisen precious bodhicitta and its trainings—learning both—one should also diligently exert effort in the three methods of guarding, purifying, and increasing. Among these, guarding the mind itself from degenerating is to keep the mind abiding in the nature of aspiration and engagement (65a), which is the point of congenial training. Purifying the defilements of that mind is to avert all misconduct, which is the training of abandoning uncongenial factors. The method for increasing virtue is to alternately practice the exchange of one's own happiness for others' suffering...

Thus, these are the instructions for favorable conditions. Similarly, regarding the aspects of abandonment and accomplishment, one must diligently abandon and adopt [practices]. This is the upholding of precepts. One should abandon the three impure actions of the three gates: physical actions such as meaningless jumping and running; verbal actions such as excessive, harsh, and sharp speech; and mental actions such as attachment to gain and honor, and craving for sleep and dullness. The body should be peaceful, relaxed, and smiling; speech should be few and gentle; and the mind should train in non-attachment, faith, and so on. This is to purify the precepts. Through wisdom, prajna (insight), and dedication, the precepts are expanded. Furthermore, as taught in the Gandavyuha Sutra (The Sutra on the Fully Purified Sphere of Activity for the Multitude, a section of the Avatamsaka Sutra), one should also diligently strive to guard one's mind and precepts through practices such as training the mind in the manner of the forty-one bodhicittas (mind-risings). Furthermore, in the Śikṣāsamuccaya (Compendium of Trainings) it is said: My body and possessions, And the virtues created in the three times, Are given to all sentient beings; These are protected, purified, and expanded. By these (giving, protecting, purifying, and expanding), it is explained that all the Bodhisattva vows are encompassed. Moreover, it is explained how to accomplish this: beginners mainly practice protection; those of fervent practice mainly purify; those dwelling on the seven impure grounds (the first to seventh bhumis) mainly give; and those dwelling on the three pure grounds (the eighth to tenth bhumis) mainly expand. All these should also be comprehended. (65b) Section 6: Explaining the manner of generating ultimate bodhicitta (bodhi-mind), there are five: 1. Cause; 2. Nature; 3. Divisions; 4. Ritual; 5. Identifying its nature. 1. First (Cause): The cause of vast ultimate bodhi practice. The cause for the arising of ultimate bodhicitta is, generally, that conventional bodhicitta has preceded it. In particular, as said by the peerless Dagpo (Dagpo Lhaje, Gampopa): "It arises through the distinctions of scripture, practice, and realization." As stated, one engages in hearing and contemplating the Dharma of scripture, and in practicing the Dharma of realization. It arises through the distinctions of realization awakened in one's heart from the blessings generated by the harmonious interdependent origination of the results of both, or of a qualified lama and disciple. And at all times, the practice of vast bodhicitta conduct is its cause. 2. Second (Nature)
