First: Regarding the six perfections of virtuous Dharma-gathering practices. Practices refer to the precepts of virtuous Dharma-gathering. In this regard, the incomparable Dagpo (Gampopa) said: “After a Bodhisattva has properly received the Bodhisattva vows, all virtuous actions of body and speech accumulated for the sake of great enlightenment, in short, are the precepts of virtuous Dharma-gathering.” The meaning of what is extensively taught in the sutras and treatises, when summarized, is all included within the six perfections. Secondly, there are two parts: 1. The establishment of the concise meaning. 2. The extensive explanation of the branches. First, there are: Determined number, sequence, definition, and etymology; Established through extensive classification and summation. The common nature of the perfections, definitively numbered as six: First, the determined enumeration: For the sake of higher rebirth (abhyudaya), these are generosity, discipline, and patience, the first three; and for the sake of definitive good (niḥśreyasa), these are the latter three (diligence, meditative concentration, and wisdom). Alternatively, for the sake of accomplishing others' welfare, these are the former three; for the sake of accomplishing one's own welfare, these are the latter three. Secondly, the sequence: This is the order in which discipline arises based on generosity, and patience arises based on discipline, and so forth; or, it is the order in which lesser qualities are presented first, and superior qualities, such as discipline being supreme after generosity, are presented later; or, the coarser ones are presented first, and the finer ones later, in any case, those that are easier to engage with are presented first. (63b) Thirdly, the definition (characteristic): It possesses four distinctions: Eliminating its own conflicting factors such as stinginess; Its companion (support): It is endowed with the wisdom that does not apprehend the three spheres (giver, receiver, gift); Its function: It fulfills the wishes of others; Its result: It causes the mental continuum of sentient beings to mature on the three vehicles (Śrāvakayāna, Pratyekabuddhayāna, Bodhisattvayāna). Fourthly, the etymology: It is called “Pāramitā” (perfection) because it supremely goes to the other shore, surpassing all worldly virtues and the virtues of the Hearers and Solitary Realizers. Fifthly, the extensive classification: Each individual perfection, such as generosity within generosity, discipline within generosity, and so on, also has six subdivisions, resulting in thirty-six types in total, and can even be classified into hundreds or thousands. Sixthly, the summation: It is summarized into two accumulations: generosity and discipline both belong to the accumulation of merit; prajñā (wisdom) belongs to the accumulation of wisdom; and the remaining three (patience, diligence, meditative concentration) belong to both. It can also be summarized into the three trainings (ethics, meditation, wisdom).

Therefore, there are three trainings of higher discipline, the fifth is the training of higher mind, and the sixth is the training of higher wisdom; these are the companions of all diligence. \t\t\tSecond, [elaboration of the branches]: \t\t\tGenerosity of material things, dharma, and fearlessness. \t\t\tDiscipline of restraint, gathering virtuous dharmas, and acting for the benefit of beings, these three. \t\t\tPatience regarding harm, difficulty, and emptiness. \t\t\tDiligence of armor, application, and insatiability. \t\t\tMeditation of abiding in bliss, accomplishment, and focusing on meaning. \t\t\tWisdom of worldly, transcendent, inferior, and supreme. \t\t\tOr cultivate those arising from hearing, contemplating, and meditating. \t\t\tEach of these has its characteristics, meaning of the term, divisions, and purposes, which can be explained in four ways, but since they are not elaborated here, they should be understood below. \t\t\tIf only briefly speaking of their essence, generosity has three: intention, substance, and field; and by abandoning the four impure means, giving away all possessions, extreme giving, and great giving, which is the generosity of material things. Explaining the Dharma of Mahayana and Hinayana in accordance with one's mental capacity is the generosity of Dharma. Protecting from temporary and ultimate fears such as kings, tigers, lions, fire, water, disease, weapons, etc., is the generosity of fearlessness. \t\t\tAlternatively, it is also explained as giving repeatedly, giving without partiality, and giving with perfect intention, these three. \t\t\tDiscipline has three: restraint from misconduct, gathering virtuous dharmas, and acting for the benefit of sentient beings, as already explained and to be explained. \t\t\tPatience has three: patience towards harm to oneself and one's party, by meditating on the nine means according to the Bodhicaryavatara and the five perceptions according to the Bodhisattvabhumi, bearing harm without caring, this is patience with injury. For the sake of Dharma, being able to endure hardships like fatigue, hunger, thirst, etc., this is patience in enduring suffering. For profound meanings like emptiness, abandoning timidity and fear, this is patience in understanding Dharma. \t\t\tDiligence has three: until the attainment of enlightenment, with the mind of not abandoning diligence, applying diligence to virtue in each session, this is armor-like diligence. Not being heedless in striving in the three areas of abandoning afflictions, accomplishing virtues, and benefiting sentient beings, this is applicative diligence. In between that, constantly working on that, this is continuous diligence. Respectful diligence. Afflictions...
