If I offer vows, the transgressions will be extremely grave, and thus they should be prohibited in all circumstances. However, factors such as death, rebirth, and forgetting will not cause the vows to deteriorate. The Bodhisattva Bhumi states: If a Bodhisattva forgets (their vows) after rebirth, by relying on virtuous spiritual friends, in order to restore their memory, they may receive (the vows) again and again, but it is not a fresh, complete taking of them. 4. Fourth, the extended meaning is: All trainings are to be learned until enlightenment. In this tradition, from the initial taking of the vows, all the trainings of aspiration and engagement must be studied; moreover, the period is solely from then until enlightenment, only receiving them, not combined with aspirations as stated in the previous tradition, and thus these should be kept distinct. 5. The fundamental fifth, explaining the common trainings of the two traditions, has three parts: 1. The trainings of aspiration; 2. The trainings of engagement; 3. The method of upholding both is taught. 1. The first has three parts: 1. The five fundamental (trainings) and so forth; 2. The three supreme ones; 3. The method of abandoning the causes of degradation. 1. First, it is: The common aspirational mind, not abandoning sentient beings. Reflecting on benefits, accumulating merits, cultivating Bodhicitta. Deceiving worthy teachers, regretting inappropriately, Hating Bodhicitta, being deceitful towards beings. (60b) Abandoning the four black dharmas, practicing the four white dharmas. In the common (trainings) of the two great chariot traditions, there are first five trainings of aspirational Bodhicitta. First, the fundamental not abandoning sentient beings, which means not contemptuously abandoning even those like enemies or tiny insects; second, contemplating the benefits of the conducive condition of Bodhicitta, which means recalling and articulating the many benefits mentioned in various sutras and treatises. The great Jowo (Atiśa) said: From lower realms one should turn away, And so on, as indicated by "etc." Third, diligently accumulating the two merits, which means practicing the ten Dharma deeds, the six perfections, and all that can become merit and wisdom, and achieving them in conjunction. Fourth, cultivating Bodhicitta through skillful means, which means taking the Bodhisattva vows during the six periods of day and night, and meditating on loving-kindness and compassion. For this, one should diligently practice the core instruction of mind training: giving and taking (tonglen). Fifth, abandoning the causes of the decline and forgetting of Bodhicitta, and for that...

Regarding avoiding reversal: Deceiving one's own Guru and other venerable ones with lies, etc. Although repentance is necessary for downfalls and transgressions, generating repentance for situations that are not a cause for repentance. Speaking unpleasant words out of malice towards those who have generated the mind of enlightenment. If one practices great or small deceit towards any being, whether they perceive it or not, whether they are pleased or not, they will fall into transgression. Therefore, these are called the Four Black Dharmas. \t\t\tFurthermore, if these transgressions pass the time limit, the vows will be broken, so confession and re-taking of vows must be done immediately. \t\t\tTherefore, these should be abandoned, and as an antidote to the Four Black Dharmas, one should practice the Four White Dharmas: consciously not speaking lies even for the sake of one's life; establishing all sentient beings in virtue, especially in the Mahayana; regarding all Bodhisattvas who have generated the mind of enlightenment (61a) as Buddhas and proclaiming their virtues; and abiding with sentient beings with a superior intention. These are taught in the Sūtra Requested by Kāśyapa (Odsrung). \t\t\t2. Second, [the three excellences]: \t\t\tMay one aspire to the three excellences of aspiration, practice, and activity. \t\t\tTo think, “I will achieve Buddhahood for the benefit of all sentient beings,” is the aspiration for the result. For that purpose, to think, “I will train in the deeds of enlightenment,” is the practice, meaning the aspiration for the means. To think, “I will fulfill all sentient beings' wishes as they desire,” is the aspiration for activity. Thus, one should always possess these three aspirations of a noble being. \t\t\t3. Third, [the method of abandoning the causes of degradation]: \t\t\tAbandon the causes of degradation such as despondency and fear. \t\t\tGiving away one's head, limbs, children, and wife; becoming despondent due to the difficulty of practicing moral discipline, diligence, etc.; becoming disheartened by the exceedingly long time required to accumulate merit for countless thirty kalpas, thinking one cannot achieve that much; fearing that there is not an iota of happiness no matter where one is born in the higher or lower realms of cyclic existence, and thus intending to abandon cyclic existence – these are all factors contrary to the generation of the mind of enlightenment and causes of degradation, and therefore should be abandoned. \t\t\t2. Second, the explanation of the precepts for engaging has two parts: 1. A brief presentation; 2. An extensive explanation. \t\t\t1. The first is: \t\t\tAll precepts for engaging, concerning both abandonment and accomplishment. \t\t\tVows, gathering of Dharma, and performing deeds, these three.
