Not getting angry. Not striking back in response to being struck. Not exposing others' faults again in response to having one's own faults exposed. Like the four dharmas of a renunciant (59a) as taught, not practicing accordingly, but reviling others and being reviled in return, and so forth, acting wrongly. Not accepting with a peaceful mind those who are angry at oneself, but letting them dissipate. Not listening to confession made in accordance with the Dharma. Following the mind of anger, these are the four contradictions to patience. Fourth, [the three contradictions to diligence] are: Gathering followers, not eliminating trivial talk, the three contradictions to diligence. Gathering a retinue for the sake of desiring gain and respect. Not eliminating laziness and so forth. With an attachment mind, delighting in the words of boisterous, trivial talk, these are the three contradictions to diligence. Fifth, [the three contradictions to meditation] are: Not seeking, not abandoning, being attached to the taste, the three contradictions to meditation. Not seeking samadhi. Not abandoning the obscurations to meditation and so forth. Regarding the taste of meditation as a quality and becoming attached to it, these are the three contradictions to meditation. Sixth, [the eight contradictions to wisdom] are: Abandoning the Shravaka Vehicle, diligently pursuing it and external paths. Delighting in them, not admiring special qualities, not going forth. Self-praise, denigrating others, clinging to words, the eight (contradictions to) wisdom. The thirty-four contradictions to gathering virtuous dharmas. Abandoning the Shravaka Vehicle out of disrespect. Abandoning one's own Mahayana tradition and diligently pursuing the Shravaka Vehicle. Likewise, diligently pursuing external treatises. Even if diligent in the Mahayana, delighting in the Shravaka Vehicle and external treatises is a fault related to inferior objects. Not appreciating the special qualities of the Mahayana. Due to arrogance, laziness, and so forth, not going forth to seek the sacred Dharma. Praising oneself and disparaging others. Not relying on the meaning but relying on the words, these four are faults related to excellent objects. Including the eight related to wisdom, altogether there are thirty-four contradictions to gathering virtuous dharmas. Second, there are also two contradictions to acting for the benefit of sentient beings: First, related to the general meaning of what is to be done. Second, related to the specific meaning of what is to be done. First, the first is: Not providing necessary help, not eliminating illness (59b) and suffering. Not disciplining/correcting. Thus it says, namely: Not providing necessary assistance. Abandoning the care of the sick. Not eliminating the suffering of others. Negligence (original text truncated here).

Four who are not properly disciplined once engaged. Second, [related to the characteristics of actions to be done] are: Not recognizing gratitude, not relieving, not giving; Not helping, not complying, not praising, not terminating; Not taming, twelve contradictions to benefiting sentient beings. Not recognizing gratitude for what has been done, not removing others' sorrow, not giving to those who desire wealth even when one possesses it, not helping one's retinue, not complying with others' intentions, not praising those with good qualities by expressing praise—these six are the faults of not benefiting. Not terminating those who are engaged in wrong actions, not taming those who deserve to be tamed by miraculous powers and clairvoyance—these two are the faults of not terminating/subduing, totaling twelve contradictions to benefiting sentient beings. Afflicted, non-afflicted, blameless become three types. These forty-six transgressions are categorized as: afflicted, when committed due to disrespect and laziness; non-afflicted, when committed due to forgetfulness and heedlessness, etc.; and blameless, when committed while observing monastic discipline or due to mental agitation. The method of dividing them into these three types is explained in the *Bodhisattvabhumi*. Third, the method of restoration when transgressions occur is: Root downfalls, heavily defiled transgressions, aspirational mind; If degenerated, abandon vows and retake; Medium and small, confess to three or one; Transgressions, afflicted or non-afflicted, by mind. Root downfalls committed with great defilement, and the degeneration of the aspirational mind for enlightenment, are explained in the *Bodhisattvabhumi* as two reasons for abandoning the vows. One should completely abandon the vows, preceded by confession and purification, and then retake them. However, Klongchen Zhap ('Klongchen Rabjam' or Longchenpa) said that one should not do this more than three times. For medium and small defilements (similar to major downfalls) committed, one should confess and restrain oneself in front of three or more vow-holders, and one vow-holder respectively. For the forty-two afflicted transgressions, if they are accumulated, one should confess in the presence of vow-holders. Non-afflicted transgressions are purified by mentally confessing before the Victorious Ones (Buddhas) and their children (Bodhisattvas), with one's own mind as witness. Here, common reasons for abandonment should also be understood as mentioned above. Although the relinquishing of vows is taught as a precept in the context of the Hearers (Śrāvakas), (it is to be understood that)...
