Ended. \t\t\tThe main part is: receiving the vows by affirming three times. \t\t\tThe concluding part is: supplicating the master to know, expounding the benefits, giving secret advice, expounding the trainings, and offering gratitude. \t\t\tThe third part is: the causes, nature, divisions, and benefits of the aspiration and application (bodhicitta) should be known. It is extensively explained in this manner. \t\t\tThe moment the vows arise, according to both traditions, occurs at the end of the three recitations. \t\t\t2. The second part explains the trainings for maintaining the received vows without degeneration, consisting of two points: 1. A brief explanation. 2. An extensive explanation. \t\t\t1. The first point is: \t\t\tThe four root (downfalls) and forty-six branch (downfalls) to be guarded. \t\t\tA person who has received the vows of aspiration and application (bodhicitta) should abandon the four root downfalls to be guarded and the forty-six branch wrongdoings, thus it is stated. \t\t\t2. The second part has two divisions: 1. Root (downfalls). 2. Branch (downfalls). \t\t\t1. The first part is: \t\t\tPraising oneself and disparaging others out of attachment to gain and respect, \t\t\tBeing miserly and stingy, not giving Dharma or wealth to the needy. (58na) \t\t\tEven when confessed, not listening and angrily attacking others, \t\t\tAbandoning the Mahayana and teaching what appears to be the sacred Dharma but is not. \t\t\tAccording to the power of defilements, they become threefold: excellent, middling, and inferior. \t\t\tThese are the four root downfalls, similar to the Pratimoksha defeats (Parajikas) of the Hearers, as stated in the "Bodhisattva Twenty Vows Summary": First, praising oneself and disparaging others due to attachment to gain and respect. \t\t\tSecond, being miserly despite having possessions; that is, due to stinginess, not giving Dharma to those who seek Dharma, and not giving material wealth to those who seek wealth, to those in pitiful poverty. \t\t\tThird, not listening to others even after they have confessed and purified, but instead angrily striking them with hands or sticks, etc. \t\t\tFourth, slandering and abandoning the Mahayana Tripitaka of the Bodhisattvas, and delighting in and teaching what is not the sacred Dharma but is presented as if it were the Dharma. \t\t\tThese four (downfalls), when endowed with vows, clear awareness present, and incited by strong defilements, meaning having all three branches complete, are similar to the Pratimoksha defeats of the Hearers. \t\t\tIf committed by middling or minor defilements, they are like the remaining (offenses) and minor transgressions of the Pratimoksha. \t\t\tFurthermore, the defilements, which cause the downfalls to become excellent, middling, or inferior depending on their strength, are also: continuously engaging in the action, and without shame or embarrassment

non-existent. Those who delight in such actions and regard them as virtues are great. Depending on the multitude or scarcity of its branches, it becomes middling or inferior. There are also differences such as the timing of feeling shame, whether early or late, and the duration of its arising, whether long or short. Second, explaining the forty-six accessory transgressions, there are two parts: 1. Thirty-four that contravene the gathering of virtuous dharmas. 2. Twelve that contravene the benefit of sentient beings. In the first part, there are: 1. Seven transgressions against generosity. 2. Nine transgressions against discipline. 3. Four transgressions against patience. 4. Three transgressions against diligence (58b). 5. Three transgressions against meditative concentration. 6. Eight transgressions against wisdom. First: Not making offerings, following, not being respectful, not replying; Not going, abandoning gifts, not expounding – these are the seven transgressions against generosity. Not making offerings to the Three Jewels, and following the mind of desire – these two contravene the giving of material things. Not being respectful towards elders in training, and not replying when asked questions – these two contravene the giving of fearlessness. Not going to places where one is invited, and rejecting and not accepting what others have given out of anger – these two do not create the conditions for others' generosity. Not expounding to those who desire Dharma contravenes the giving of Dharma. These are the seven transgressions against generosity. Second, [nine transgressions against discipline]: Neglecting, not studying, being minor, not practicing permissions; Wrong livelihood, joking, cyclic existence mind, bad reputation; Not taming afflictions – these are the nine transgressions against discipline. Neglecting corrupted discipline; not studying what should be known for the sake of others' faith; having little diligence in benefiting sentient beings; having compassion, yet when there is a need, even if unwholesome actions are permitted, not practicing them – these four contravene the primary focus on the benefit of others. Engaging in the five wrong livelihoods; playing with frivolity and heedlessness; thinking that cyclic existence alone can lead to liberation due to the power of attachment and craving – these three contravene the primary focus on self-benefit. Not fearing a bad reputation; not taming afflictions – these two contravene the equality of both (self and other benefit). These are the nine transgressions against discipline. Third, [four transgressions against patience]: Not practicing the four dharmas, abandoning anger, not listening to confession; Following anger – these are the four transgressions against patience. Not returning insult for insult; not returning anger for
