Acharya Nagpo-pa summarized (confession) into three: those of highest faculty realize all phenomena are unarisen; those of middling faculty supplicate to the deity of vidya-mantra (56b); those of lowest faculty, grasping transgressions as real entities, regret and confess their faults before others. Generally, day and night are divided into three parts each, making six periods. If a transgression occurs within any period, and no antidote is applied thereafter, it is called "past due," and the transgression becomes fundamental. If the confession deadline has not passed, then with pure moral discipline, it can be restored merely by the aforementioned rectification. If the confession deadline has passed, such as the transgression remaining for days, then one should confess with the four powers and restrain, thereby rising from the transgression. By taking the vow again, it is restored. The four powers are: 1) The power of reliance, which is taking refuge in the Buddha and so forth (the Three Jewels). 2) The power of complete repentance, which is strongly regretting and mentioning the transgression by name. 3) The power of applying antidotes, primarily reciting dharanis and mantras such as the Hundred-Syllable Mantra of the Tathagata (ཡིག་བརྒྱ་, शत अक्षर, Shata Akshara, Hundred Syllables), known as the six gates of antidote. 4) The power of restoration, which is resolving not to commit it again in the future. 5. Further elaboration on the precepts of engagement: The precepts of engagement should be undertaken according to time and ability. Above, the precepts of abstention were mainly taught, and some precepts of engagement will also be explained below. Those that are extensively found in the treatises should be observed to the best of one's own ability. As for time, it is appropriate to undertake them for as long as one is capable, be it for days, months, years, throughout one's life, or until enlightenment. As stated in the Shikshasamuccaya: "Vows should be undertaken in accordance with one's own capacity. If not so, then all Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, and the world with its deities will be deceived." 2. Explaining the tradition of extensive conduct of the Great Vehicle, there are four points: 1) What causes one to attain what has not been attained (57a); 2) How to guard what has been attained; 3) How to rectify if it degenerates; 4) Further elaboration on how to train. 1. The first is: The seven kinds of Pratimoksha vows of the extensive conduct tradition, By those skilled and capable, possessing any of them, and being endowed with vows, After having trained in the Tripitaka of aspiration Bodhicitta, One extensively bestows the engaging Bodhicitta, eliminating obstacles, defilements, and so forth.

The basis for the arising of Bodhisattva vows in the Mahayana tradition (rgya chen spyod pa'i lugs kyi) is definitely from one of the seven Pratimoksha (so thar ris) vows previously taken, and it is said that they do not actually arise in those with impediments. The qualified guru from whom one receives (the vows) is as mentioned above. In summary, the best (is one who holds) the Tripitaka (sde snod). At the very least, (one who is) skilled in the ritual of bestowing Bodhisattva vows (byang sdom 'bog chog la mkhas pa), capable of explaining (their meaning), having received the vows and not degenerated them, and possessing compassion to nurture disciples; thus, it is stated that one bestows vows with these four qualities. Furthermore, unless it harms life or pure conduct, a guru is definitely necessary. However, if one cannot find (a guru), it is permissible to take (the vows) in front of an object of reliance (such as a Buddha image or stupa). As stated in the Bodhisattvabhumi (Byang sa): 'If one searches for a qualified spiritual friend for distances of yojanas (rgyang grags) and gavyutis (dpag tshad), to the extent that it does not harm life or pure conduct, and still does not find one, then by taking (the vows) oneself in front of an object of reliance of the Triple Gem, they will still arise.' If they are degenerated, a guru is definitely necessary for their restoration; this is the view of the Elder (Sthavira) Jangzang (Byang Bzang) and others. In the treatises of Asanga (Thogs Med) and others, the explanation of taking the aspirational Bodhicitta vows (smon sems len pa'i sgros) is not explicit, but Jowo Je (Atisha) clearly taught it as an oral lineage instruction passed down from Maitreya (Byams mgon). This has three meanings: definitively establishing the basis, accomplishing the preparation, and definitively establishing the nature. The first is to generate joy in Bodhicitta by restraining attachment to the two extremes. The second has two: aspiration and engagement. (57b) For the first (aspiration), after accomplishing the special three methods of relying on the object of preparation (prayer, taking refuge, accumulating merit), for the actual (practice), awakening one's own potential, seeing the benefits of perfect enlightenment through the power of others, and so on; the power of preparation is to be weary of cyclic existence, not to be attached to nirvana, generating the perception of joy in Bodhicitta and taking the vows. Afterwards, generating joy, teaching the precepts, and offering thanks complete it. For the second (engagement), the engaging vows are: after generating the aspirational Bodhicitta and having studied the Bodhisattva Tripitaka, the ritual for taking them, which later one is able to faithfully practice, consists of three parts: preparation, actual, and conclusion. The preparation consists of: praying, examining one's intention, quickly requesting bestowal, inquiring about impediments, making one understand the precepts, and asking if one is joyous...
