As stated previously. If not found, then in the presence of a special support (vessel/representation); if that is also not available, then in front of oneself, in the sky, visualizing Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, one takes it oneself, so it is taught. The ritual for taking (the vows) is: If there is a Lama, offer a mandala and make supplications. Through the preliminary seven-branch offering, purify one's mindstream and especially take refuge in the Three Jewels. During the main part, simultaneously take the Bodhisattva vows of aspiration and engagement. Afterwards, cultivate joy in oneself and others, and offer praise. Recite the precepts and make an offering of gratitude. If one takes it oneself, everything except the beginning and end should be completed. Although merely taking it oneself can generate the essence of Bodhicitta, for the vows to be complete, factors such as the strength of supportive conditions and the strength of the foundation are necessary, according to the wise. 2. The two ways of observing the precepts: 1. Root precepts, 2. Branch precepts. 1. The first has three: 1. Fourteen for those of sharp faculties, 2. Four for those of middling faculties, 3. One for those of dull faculties, so it is taught. 1. The first is: The fourteen root downfalls to be protected, for those of sharp faculties: Stealing property of the Three Jewels, abandoning the Dharma, destroying ethical conduct (or those who maintain it); Five acts of immediate retribution, wrong views, these five are common for kings (Bodhisattvas). The fourteen root downfalls of the precepts to be protected are explained in the *Shikshasamuccaya* (Compendium of Training) according to the profound meaning of the *Nam-snying-gi mdo* (Heart Sutra). Namely, stealing property offered to the representations of body, speech, and mind (Buddha images, scriptures, stupas) and the Sangha; abandoning the Dharma of Mahayana and Hinayana; let alone those who possess discipline, even if they are undisciplined, as long as they have the signs of a renunciant, harming such individuals; killing one's father, mother, or an Arhat; causing schism in the Sangha (54b); and maliciously drawing blood from a Buddha – committing any one of these five acts of immediate retribution; holding the wrong view that there is no karmic fruition and no future life, engaging in non-virtuous actions, and adhering to nihilistic views—these five are the five root downfalls primarily likely to occur to Bodhisattva-kings. The first four and destroying cities etc., five, Are likely to occur to ministers. This refers to the first four root downfalls of a king, and taking the destruction of cities and so forth as one. The term 'cities and so forth' refers to: a place where four types of people (castes/races) reside is a 'city' (grong); a place where eighteen types of artisans reside is a 'town' (grong khyer); a place with many towns is a 'metropolis' (grong brdal); a place with many metropolises is a 'region' (yul ljongs); (the text is cut off here)

There are numerous lands, traversing the world, and these five that destroy are the five root downfalls primarily arising in Bodhisattva ministers. To the unprepared, teach not emptiness; From enlightenment turn, urge others to lower path; Self-praise, denigrate others, claim profound tolerance; Cause punishment, steal Triple Gem's wealth, accept bribes; Abandon meditation, seize practitioners' provisions for reciters. These are the eight (root downfalls) of the beginner. This means: teaching the profound meaning of emptiness to those of small intellect and undeveloped minds, thus causing them to lose faith and become fearful; or for those who have already entered the Mahayana, proclaiming that they are unable to practice the six perfections, causing them to turn away from complete enlightenment and enter the path of Shravakas or Pratyekabuddhas; or unnecessarily advising those of Shravaka lineage to abandon the Hinayana path and enter the Mahayana; or holding the view that afflictions in the Hinayana path are irreversible, and unnecessarily causing others to hold this view; for the sake of gain and honor, praising oneself when inappropriate and disparaging others when inappropriate; for the sake of gain and honor, boasting of having realized such profound Dharma, and urging others to meditate similarly, thus claiming to have attained tolerance (bzod pa) in profound Dharma (this constitutes the sixth downfall). The seventh root downfall is: when a powerful individual, like one of royal lineage, is incited by subtle slandering monks (dge sbyong), and, relying on the powerful individual, causes other monks to be punished with forfeiture of property. As a result, the slandering monk steals the property of the Triple Gem (dkon mchog gi dkor) and gives it as a secret bribe for the slander. If these slandering monks themselves accept it, or if they give it to the powerful individual and appropriate the property, then both will incur the downfall. The eighth root downfall is: establishing bad laws that harm Dharma-abiding monks, causing them to abandon meditation (Yoga) exemplified by calm abiding (Shamatha); and seizing the enjoyments of renunciant meditating Bhikkhus and giving them to reciters, or causing them to be given. If the recipient also sides with the one who seized, then both will incur the root downfall. These are the eight root downfalls of the beginner. With the five for kings, one uncommon for ministers, and these eight for beginners, the total is fourteen. Page 2, 2
