Great importance was placed on the superior and inferior. \t\t\tLord Chandrakirti did not designate the 'mind' as 'principal' or 'fundamental' (i.e., did not assert the inherent existence of mind). \t\t\tThe master Abhaya, however, held that there was no difference between the two (Madhyamaka and Cittamatra). \t\t\tKunkhyen Pema Karpo Zhabs (the Omniscient White Lotus Foot) and others also established it in a similar manner (53b), and refuted the former (view) with scriptural authority and reasoning. \t\t\tPalden Tsuglag Trengwa and others also followed Lord Gampopa. \t\t\tFurthermore, the oral instructions of the great siddhas Virupa and Naropa, which were bestowed upon the great venerable Sakyapa (Sakya Pandita), include a ritual for generating bodhicitta as a preliminary for empowerment that is in accordance with Madhyamaka. Although it exists separately, it is not counted as a distinct tradition (vehicle/chariot lineage). \t\t\tChapter 2: Second, regarding the detailed divisions, there are two: \t\t\t1. The tradition of the lineage of profound view. \t\t\t2. The tradition of the lineage of vast conduct. \t\t\t1. The first (part) has five points: \t\t\t1. How to attain what has not been attained. \t\t\t2. How to guard what has been attained so it does not diminish. \t\t\t3. How to relinquish the vows. \t\t\t4. If degenerated, how to restore. \t\t\t5. Further discussion on engagement. \t\t\t1. The first is: \t\t\tIn the tradition of the profound view lineage, \t\t\tAny sentient being who understands the meaning, as a vessel or from a guru, \t\t\tThrough preliminary practices of accumulation and purification, simultaneously takes the aspirational and engaging bodhicitta vows. \t\t\tIn the tradition of the profound view lineage, the vessel by which one takes (the vows) is: it is held that the bodhisattva vows arise in all sentient beings who understand the meaning, comprehend the purpose, and have the desire to take them. \t\t\tFor example, in the Gandavyuha Sutra, Manjushri is said to have established three thousand ocean nagas in bodhicitta. \t\t\tFrom the Bhadrakalpika (Sutra): \t\t\tWhen the Victorious One, wishing to benefit (beings), became the city lord, \t\t\tThe Tathagata to that Punya-prabha (Radiance of Merit), \t\t\tHaving taken the vow of refraining from killing for one day, \t\t\tFirst generated the mind of supreme enlightenment (bodhicitta). \t\t\tThus it is said, and: \t\t\tIn the Sutra Requested by Uṣṇīṣa-ratna (Jewel on the Crown), it is known from this and other instances that twenty thousand gods and human beings generated bodhicitta. \t\t\tAccording to the view of the unequalled Gampopa: \t\t\tOne who possesses the Mahayana lineage and has awakened it, and \t\t\tOne who has taken refuge in the Three Jewels is the vessel for generating aspirational bodhicitta, and \t\t\tIn addition to that, one who possesses any of the seven categories of Pratimoksha vows (excluding only the Upasaka/Upasika vows) and has generated aspirational bodhicitta is required as the vessel for the engaging bodhicitta vows. (54a) \t\t\tThe object from whom to take (the vows) is: it is taken from a qualified guru. \t\t\tThe qualifications of the guru are explained in the previously mentioned discipline and conduct.
