Arising primarily originates from causes indicated by others. Third, [specifically mentioning the lineage of oral instructions]: From loving-kindness arises compassion, from that arises bodhicitta. The essence of loving-kindness is the mind wishing others benefit and happiness. By first meditating on it, compassion arises. This is the mind wishing all sentient beings to be free from suffering and its causes. From this, the bodhicitta wishing to attain Buddhahood arises. Therefore, loving-kindness is the cause of all virtuous dharmas, as stated in the Sutra of Admonitions to the King. Second, the essence of the vow is: Its essence is, with the mind wishing to attain complete enlightenment for the sake of others, the morality of abandoning all unwholesome actions of the three gates (body, speech, and mind). The general essence of the Bodhicitta Vow is: a special object aroused by the mind wishing to attain complete enlightenment for the sake of others, and the morality of definite emergence accompanied by a concomitant mental factor that accomplishes its favorable aspects and abandons the unwholesome actions of the three gates which are its unfavorable aspects. In the Ornament for Clear Realizations, it is stated: "For the sake of others, one desires perfect complete enlightenment; this is bodhicitta." Third, there are six types of distinctions: First, the referent (essence); second, the manner of generation; third, the stage; fourth, the basis; fifth, the object; sixth, the door of ritual. First is: The door of distinction, by being accompanied by wishing and striving minds: The Wishing and Engaging. That is to say, if classified by the referent (essence) of bodhicitta, there are two: the Vow of Wishing Bodhicitta and the Vow of Engaging Bodhicitta (51b). The first is: The Bodhicitta morality of a Mahayana practitioner, which is accompanied by the mental factor wishing to attain complete enlightenment for the sake of others. The second is: The morality, which is accompanied by the mental factor wishing to strive in vast conduct for that purpose. The referents (essences) of both Wishing and Engaging Bodhicitta are the bodhicittas in the continuum of Mahayana practitioners on the Path of Accumulation and the Path of Preparation, and the bodhicitta that is the post-meditative state of Arya Bodhisattvas, and so forth. The distinction between these two is: Teachers like Damshta Sena and others are included in the worldly path...

Aspiration and engagement encompassed by the path that has been traversed. Abhaya and Smṛti, etc., consider the three aspects of mind generation, such as the aspiration with underlying intention, as aspiration; and the remaining nineteen as engagement. Gyatsho Trin (Ocean Cloud) and others believe that the aspiration to enlightenment, not initiated by ritual, is aspiration, while the generation of accumulations is engagement. According to the Great Vehicle Sutra (Gyachen Pyöd Gyud) and Jowo Je (Atisha), making vows concerning the result is aspiration, and making vows concerning the cause is engagement. Moreover, some believe that it is aspiration until the attainment of irreversibility, and after attainment, it is engagement. According to the Profound View Tradition (Zabmo Lta Gyud) and Shantideva (Zhiwa Lha), merely generating the intention to achieve enlightenment through compassion for sentient beings, without relying on ritual, and proceeding with that which is affirmed by ritual, is aspiration-mind; and correctly upholding its vows, and thereafter continuously engaging, is considered engagement-mind. Thus, aspiration is the mind-generation itself, and engagement is the vow. Here, the Sakya masters (Sakya'i Rje btsun rnams) state: Aspiration-mind, aspiration mind-generation, protection of uncorrupted aspiration; engagement-mind, engagement mind-generation, protection of uncorrupted engagement. Their pure aspiration-engagement (52b) mind is not a vow. However, if the aspiration-engagement mind-generation is accompanied by a mind of renunciation based on dispelling conflicting factors, it fulfills the characteristics and becomes a vow. Chapter 2, Part 2 [Classification by Mode of Arising]: By mode of arising, there are two: coarse and subtle. Classified by mode of arising, there are two: the coarse, which arises from conventional expression, and the subtle, which is naturally obtained by reality. As stated in Shantideva's Commentary on the Four Hundred Fifty Verses (Bzhi brgya lnga bcu pa'i 'grel pa): "As long as this mind of enlightenment is merely a strong inclination towards emptiness, and not a direct realization, it is conventionally designated. And when it is directly realized, at that time, it should be known as ultimate." (Here, 'Śāntipa' refers to the Indian scholar-monk, and 'Bzhi brgya lnga bcu pa'i 'grel pa' is a text title). Chapter 3, Part 3 [Classification by Stages (Bhūmi)]: Stages: aspiration, resolve, maturation, complete abandonment of all obscurations. Classified by the stages of progression, as stated in the Mahāyāna-sūtrālaṃkāra (Mdo sde rgyan): The mind-generation, that is, on all grounds (bhūmis), Aspiration and pure superior intention, Maturation
