Thus, arising with fifteen. Fourth, suppressing the defilements' entanglements: this involves the five methods for protecting the training. The first of these is protecting by relying on dharma-compliant provisions: the four—food, clothing, utensils, and dwelling—relying on the conditions for dwelling comfortably. Second, protecting by relying on other individuals: performing according to the instructions of the resident Lama, or other Sthaviras (elders) who uphold the Tripitaka. Third, protecting by recognizing the unconducive factors that are to be abandoned: knowing the methods by which the five categories of downfalls (heavy or light) arise. Fourth, protecting by thoroughly purifying the training: diligently observing Uposatha (restoration of vows), Vassa (rainy season retreat), and Pravāraṇā (invitation to critique). Fifth, protecting through the perfection of one's intention and action (page 49v): Regarding this, perfect intention involves eight factors—faith, compassion, wisdom, mindfulness, introspection, shame, and fear of wrongdoing—which precede perfect action. Initially, one should learn the indispensable Vinaya. Diligently practice the four causes for not falling into downfalls. Abandon the five dharma factors that are contrary to the training. Rely on the five conducive dharma factors. After understanding the five factors of complete comprehension and the five factors of near tranquility, one should know what to adopt and what to abandon, thereby learning the six aspects of training. One should also possess the five dharma factors of diligence in training and the corresponding powers. Cultivating ethical conduct (śīla) by possessing both perfect intention and action: All bhikshus, including Sthaviras (elders), intermediates, and novices, should apply their minds to thinking that they have gone forth (from household life). They should apply their minds to thinking that the Buddha, the Bhagavan, is their protector. They should be inclined towards nirvana. They should practice in accordance with the established basis of training. They should be diligent in understanding the unique qualities of the Lama, as stated. Fifth, abandoning the latent defilements of afflictions: This involves the Uposatha of tranquility (śamatha), which is the meditation of yoga. One should pray to a Lama who understands yoga, inquire about the four obstacles. After examining the four abodes, one should protect and accumulate the collection of samadhi. This is applied to five aspects: perfect seclusion, one-pointed mind, purifying obscurations, and cultivating mental application (manasikāra). One should perceive tranquility and coarseness as worldly paths.

Detachment from attachment, and diligent effort in calm abiding (shamatha) through individually discerning the aggregates of body, feelings, mind, and dharmas across the three times—which is the meditation on perception—along with cultivating the four applications of mindfulness and other factors of enlightenment: by means of these two (shamatha-vipassana and factors of enlightenment), one traverses the eight bhumis, such as seeing the white dharmas, and the paths of accumulation, preparation, seeing, and meditation. (folio 50r) Furthermore, through the nine methods of mental abiding, one cultivates the mental application of calm abiding (shamatha), and through the four ways of analyzing dharmas, etc., one cultivates the mental application of special insight (vipassana). Based on these two types of one-pointedness of mind, having attained the four mental applications such as "pervaded by suffering," one then embarks on the path of accumulation, which is mingled with hearing and contemplation, by individually discerning the sixteen aspects such as impermanence, starting from the Four Noble Truths, through the mental application of "thorough discrimination of characteristics." Having surpassed this, one then traverses the path of preparation—warmth, summit, patience, and supreme worldly dharmas—through the mental application arising from conviction, which is the mode of single-pointed meditation. Subsequently, immediately upon engaging with the previously diligent truths, non-conceptual, extremely decisive wisdom and direct perception wisdom arise, thereby abandoning the defilements to be relinquished by seeing. Through the "mental application of utter solitude," one attains the path of seeing. Through the "mental application of application" and the "mental application of joy and suffering," one abandons the defilements to be relinquished by meditation and traverses the paths of meditation, until the "mental application of the culmination of application"—the vajra-like samadhi—arises, thereby attaining the state of an Arhat with an utterly liberated mind. This is the "mental application of the fruit of the culmination of application," at which point all defilements are exhausted. The three fruits, such as stream-enterer, are also attained based on the extent of abandoning the defilements to be relinquished by meditation. The fourth (section) is: Thus, from pure ethical conduct, one's self dwells happily, endowed with ten benefits (self-interest), and gods and humans obtain abundant benefit and happiness (other-interest). This becomes the cause for the Dharma to endure for a long time, and thereby, those who have not yet attained it can also happily enter. Chapter on the Classification of Pratimoksha Vows.
