It can be restored by confessing with the complete [mindset] and taking the vows again. Because these are vows held by Mahayana bodhicitta. As for the secondary downfalls, it is taught that they can be purified by confessing and rectifying them properly with the four opponent powers. (47b) All methods of rectification, both earlier and later, can only free one from downfalls by possessing strong regret and a sense of shame. If these are not present, even if one experiences mere punishment, one cannot be freed from downfalls. Therefore, keeping this in mind, it is stated that those with great shame and those who uphold the Vinaya Pitaka can purify all downfalls merely through confession. 7. The seventh [distinction of relinquishing or not relinquishing] is: Except for wrong views, defeat, and those who relinquish their vows, Other causes do not lead to relinquishing. For those who develop wrong views and cut off their roots of virtue, those who incur a defeat (pārājika), and those who relinquish their vows, their vows are destroyed. Apart from these, other causes of relinquishing, such as death or gender change, do not cause relinquishment. This is because it is desired to understand both the downfall and the vow (for relinquishment to occur). Thus it is taught. 3. A brief summary of the essence of the Pratimoksha vows: In short, abandon all evil, practice all good, Discipline one's own mind, all Vinaya Pitaka are contained therein. To summarize all the precepts mentioned above: abandon all prescribed and natural transgressions, practice all white virtues associated with the three doors (body, speech, mind), and diligently tame this mind, which is under the sway of discursive thoughts, by means of the antidotes of mindfulness and introspection, as this mind is the root of all good and evil. All the meaning of the Vinaya Pitaka is contained herein. As stated in the Upavasatha (Skt: Upavasatha, Chinese literal meaning: Nourishing merit, purifying body and mind) verse: Commit no evil, Practice all good, Purify one's own mind, This is the teaching of the Buddhas. 4. A brief summary of the faults and merits of two ways: violating discipline and upholding discipline: Violating discipline incurs heavy fault, while the disciplined one, Is the basis of all qualities, giving rise to all white Dharma. After taking the precepts (48a), violating discipline incurs extremely heavy faults, and no qualities will arise in one's continuum.

Thus, In the *Sutra of Proclaiming Dharma*, it is said: "One who corrupts and breaks the precepts will, for hundreds of thousands of myriad rebirths, be separated from noble lineage, abandon happiness, and experience great downfall." In the *Vinaya Scripture*, among the ten disadvantages of not upholding precepts, it is stated: One will not hear the sacred Dharma, And will quickly forget what is heard. Realization of paths and stages will not arise. And so on, it is taught. Even minor downfalls generate great transgressions, therefore one must guard against even the most subtle ones, as it is stated in the scripture: Whoever, regarding the compassionate teachings of the Teacher, Thinks lightly and transgresses even slightly, That one will consequently experience suffering under the sway of others, Just as cutting bamboo groves harms the mango grove. Here, some consider the great words of the King (worldly laws), Even if occasionally transgressed, punishment will not be received. If one improperly transgresses the pronouncements of the Sage (Buddha), One will be reborn as an animal, like the Naga of Ela leaves. And so on, it is stated. In short, the sutras explain that if one transgresses against the Pārājika (defeat), Saṅghāvaśeṣa (remainder), Sthūlātyaya (gross offense), Pācittiya (expiation), Prātideśanīya (individual confession), and Duṣkṛta (wrongdoing) downfalls, one will gradually be reborn from the hot hells up to the reviving hell. To possess precepts (ethical conduct) is the foundation for all qualities of scriptural understanding and realization of all vehicles, the condition for their development, and the producer of all wholesome dharmas. In the *Letter to a Friend*, it is said: Precepts are like the earth, the ground for all growth, It is well said to be the excellent basis and support of all good qualities. And so on. In the *Sutra of Proclaiming Dharma*: Those endowed with precepts are praised by all the world. And so on, it is extensively taught. Sāga Deva says: Excellent praise and wealth are abundant, One will be reborn in a sacred divine palace. Will attain samādhi and definite emergence (liberation), These precepts bear great fruit. And so on. (48b) In the *Sutra on Cherishing Monks*, it is said: One who confidently practices the training of precepts, That person, even for a single day, Accumulates immeasurable heaps of merit, And will achieve the fruit of Buddhahood. And so on, it is said. In short, in ancient times when the teachings flourished, for immeasurable years, those who upheld perfectly pure precepts, complete in their training...
