One should abide by the twelve virtues cultivated by practice. As it is said: Alms-mendicants do not take a second meal from a single seat. The three monastic robes, and worn-out felt clothing, Dwelling in solitude and under trees, without seeking shelter or covering. Dwelling in charnel grounds and sitting constantly, as is the foundation. As such, for all good and bad food and clothing, one should also abandon the five wrong livelihoods. 2. Second part [Briefly on What to Adopt and Abandon]: What is permissible and closely related should be adopted; what is impermissible and closely related should be abandoned. Even for permissions and prohibitions not explicitly stated, one should discern them through reasoning and then adopt or abandon accordingly: If something is close to what is said to be permissible to do, and is not impermissible, then one should practice it without doubt. For example, just as the prohibitions and permissions stated for novices serve as a guide for observing the posadha vows. If something is close to what is said to be impermissible to practice, and is not permissible, then all of these should be completely abandoned. For example, just as it is prohibited to make cushions from silk-cotton (silk), similarly, it is impermissible to make cushions from materials equivalent to or superior to it. Thus, this concise Vinaya was taught by the Buddha in the Minor Vinaya section when he was about to pass into nirvana. 3. Third part [How the Three Branches are Possessed]: Those who assert form (materiality) say the three branches are distinct and possessed, Those who assert consciousness (mind) believe they are possessed through transformation. So, regarding the three branches thus explained (page 46b), when one accepts and abides by them, are these three possessed as distinct entities? Are they possessed as a single entity? Or are they possessed in the manner where the former transforms into the latter? In this regard, according to the system that asserts form (rupavada), like the Vaibhashikas (Sarvastivada), when a monk sequentially takes the three branches, these three are acquired by the acquiring cause and not abandoned by the abandoning cause, hence they are distinct forms in nature. According to the system that asserts consciousness (cittavada), like the Madhyamikas, the three branches, when sequentially received by a monk, are not simultaneously possessed as distinct entities. This is because if they were, it would imply that three other substances of mental factors of abandoning (vows) are simultaneously present as retinue to a single primary mind. Nor are they possessed as a single entity, because in a single mental continuum, it is impossible for these three to have a common basis. Therefore, in such a continuum, the former transforms into the latter, and they are possessed in a manner of progressive transformation of substances, etc., just as a lay practitioner (takes) vows...

...manner. Therefore, when one takes the bhikshu vows, the former vows transform into the nature of the later vows. For example, just as the path of accumulation transforms into the path of preparation, and from there into the path of seeing. Therefore, in the continuum of a bhikshu, the shramanera precepts are attained and not degenerated. However, it is not reasonable to assert that the shramanera precepts exist in the continuum of a bhikshu, because in the continuum of a bhikshu, these three sets of vows are neither distinct material phenomena nor distinct consciousness phenomena. This is because these two cannot coexist simultaneously in a single essence. This is the assertion. Chapter 2, Root Second: The distinctions of Mahayana Pratimoksha vows are seven. J1. By way of bodhicitta (generation of the mind of enlightenment). J2. By way of ritual. J3. By way of the object of reception (recipient). J4. By way of basis. J5. By way of permissions and prohibitions. J6. By way of restoration. J7. By way of relinquishment (giving up or not giving up). J1. First, regarding the generation of bodhicitta. Mahayana Pratimoksha vows are like those of the Hinayana. It is taught that at the time of taking the vows, if one aims at enlightenment for the sake of others (46b), Or even if one develops this aspiration later, it can transform into Mahayana Pratimoksha. The extensive, uncommon ritual for Mahayana Pratimoksha vows has not appeared in Tibet. In the "Three Hundred Verses," it is stated: "Receiving the glory of complete enlightenment is empowerment." And: In the "Light Commentary," it states: "Perfect enlightenment itself is glorious, because it is the cause of the Dharma King's actions. Therefore, empowerment is given for its attainment." As such, distinguishing the Sravaka Pratimoksha as a basis through intention is the definition of Mahayana Pratimoksha. That is to say, from the very beginning, at the time of taking the vows, one aims for the attainment of perfect enlightenment for the benefit of others. Or, even if one does not understand such a bodhicitta at that time, but later generates such a bodhicitta, it is taught that it can also transform into Mahayana Pratimoksha. J2. Second, [regarding the distinction of ritual]: The common ritual is according to the Hinayana tradition, While the uncommon one is obtained through superior confession (posadha), ordination, and so forth, As well as through common aspiration and preparatory stages. There are three types of ordination rituals. Mahayana Pratimoksha vows that are common with the Hinayana are the eight categories of vows observed with a Mahayana bodhicitta intention and performed according to the Hinayana ritual. The uncommon ritual Mahayana Pratimoksha vows are those where, in the preliminary rites, Maitreya, Manjushri, and so forth, for the sake of many beings...
