Therefore, in this era when the Dharma is nearing its decline, it is taught that maintaining even a single precept for one day and one night brings immense benefits. From the King of Concentration Sūtra (Samādhirāja Sūtra): For kalpas numerous as the sands of the Ganges, With a pure mind, offerings of food and drink, Parasols, banners, and rows of butter lamps, Served countless millions of Buddhas. Yet whoever, when the sacred Dharma is greatly decaying, And the teachings of the Sugata are about to cease, Observes a single precept day and night, That merit is far superior to the former. As it is said, those who seek liberation should diligently strive in the precepts. Here, incidentally, a brief explanation of the stages of the Hinayana Pratimokṣa path (individual liberation path): Generally, all the topics explained in the Vinaya were summarized by the noble Asanga into four points: Gathering the monastic community (Sangha), well-gathering, doing as appropriate for those gathered, and enabling others in the future to enter happily. The first: refers to the four assemblies (disciples) who, out of faith, go forth from home into homelessness, and receive full ordination through past and present rituals. The second: refers to how precepts are established, the causes for establishing them, etc., along with their basis (Vinaya rules), with definite emergence (from cyclic existence), with the teacher (Buddha), with taming (beings), and teaching the Dharma through miraculous displays. The third (has five parts), the first: relying on appropriate requisites, meaning abandoning wrong livelihood, and using food, primarily the four medicines (which are permissible for seven days), obtained through means consistent with the Dharma, timely and suitable; the four robes, which are minor requisites beyond basic needs; utensils for living and necessities; and dwellings such as monastic temples and individual residences, under trees, seats, bedding, etc., utilizing these places and abodes in a manner that avoids the two extremes and is not defiled by downfalls. The second: subduing individuals who are not in harmony with the Dharma, which means expelling those who have committed irreversible pārājika (defeats/heavy offenses); apart from that, for others, interrupting their bad actions through admonition (karma), causing them to rectify their faults through reminder, and resolving disputes through appeasement (karma). The third: eliminating arisen regret, which includes five ways of regret, five occasions for vigilance, and five Dharmas for eliminating regret.
