are included. Regarding the precepts for engaging (in the Dharma), there are two aspects: the prohibitive aspect and the affirmative aspect. Although these two encompass almost all precepts of the higher and lower vehicles, being vast in scope, they can be summarized into three types of ethics: the ethics of restraining from unwholesome deeds, the ethics of gathering wholesome dharmas, and the ethics of benefiting sentient beings. These three, according to the intention of the Bodhisattva-bhūmi, as summarized by the venerable Candrakīrtikumāra (Moonlight Youth), state that the first is to stabilize the mind, the second is to ripen the dharmas within one's own continuum, and the third is to fully ripen sentient beings. Thus it was taught. 2.2 The second [extensive explanation] has two parts: 2.1 Explaining the prohibitive aspect, and 2.2 Explaining the affirmative aspect. 2.1 The first has two parts: 4.1 Identifying the nature, 4.2 Explaining what to adopt and what to abandon in detail. 4.1 The first is: The prohibitive aspect of ethics, as mentioned above, consists of two traditions. The precepts of the prohibitive aspect are the ethics of restraint. Among these, the common eight kinds of Pratimokṣa vows are those one has personally taken; and the uncommon ones are the root and branch downfalls of the two vehicle traditions mentioned above, all of which are to be restrained from. Other incompatible factors of the Bodhisattva vows also arise from the Mahayana sutras, including the ten non-virtues, the eight worldly dharmas, and the opposite of the eight branches of the noble path, namely wrong views and wrong thoughts, etc., totaling eight. Flattery, extortion, seeking offerings, seeking gain, and deception—these are the five wrong livelihoods. Butcher, liquor seller, prostitute, king, and going to the place of untouchables—these are the five inappropriate activities. Not dedicating, dedicating incorrectly, regretting wholesome deeds, and anger—these are the four causes for the exhaustion of virtues. Viewing with different perspectives, associating with evil friends, holding wrong views, etc.—all these actions described as demonic are to be abandoned. 4.2 The second [explaining what to adopt and what to abandon in detail] is: All self-imposed faults without necessity, And hindrances that ripen one's own and others' continuums, Happiness in this life, suffering in the next, or suffering in both, All forms of downfalls and non-downfalls, completely abandon. All blameworthy faults, both conventional and inherent, when there is no special need, and hindrances that ripen one's own and others' continuums, for example, the signs of a householder

Moreover, like adopting improper conduct. Although it appears to be happiness in this life (62n), in the future it generates the fruit of suffering, like enjoying wealth and provisions obtained through wrong livelihood. Suffering in both this life and the next, like arranging a battle formation. The actual downfalls previously mentioned, and the semblance of non-downfalls, should also be completely abandoned in all respects. Suffering now, happiness later, happiness in both; Non-downfalls and semblances of downfalls, all should be practiced. For example, though suffering in this life, one attains great happiness in the next, such as practicing austerities for the Dharma, or giving away all possessions for the purification of a field. Happiness in both immediate and long term, such as perfectly observing ethical discipline, and for both non-downfalls and the semblance of downfalls, one should practice and accomplish them. Regarding the fourfold classification of downfalls: concerning the precepts of ethical discipline, killing a living being out of hatred is a downfall; if one kills out of a beneficial intention, it is a semblance of a downfall; not killing out of compassion is a non-downfall; not killing even if it benefits others is a semblance of a non-downfall. Concerning the accumulation of virtuous Dharma: not giving due to stinginess is a downfall; not giving out of a beneficial intention is a semblance of a downfall; giving with a pure intention is a non-downfall; giving in order to harm others is a semblance of a non-downfall. Concerning benefiting sentient beings: not caring for the sick is a downfall; not caring for the sick for the sake of accomplishing a great purpose is a semblance of a downfall; caring for the sick with compassion is a non-downfall; if, while there are other caregivers, one abandons one's own great purposes such as meditation and reading to care for the sick, it is a semblance of a non-downfall. In this context, a semblance of a downfall is actually a non-downfall, and a semblance of a non-downfall is a downfall. To those with compassion, No faults at all apply. As stated in the *Twenty Vows Treatise* (62b): 'Because of possessing compassion and loving-kindness, there is no fault in a virtuous mind.' Accordingly, due to the three causes such as possessing compassion for others, with no self-interest, and having only the intention to benefit that object, with the exception of certain cases of abandonment, whatever of the four categories is practiced, not only is there no fault, but it is taught as a precept to be accomplished. 2. Second, the explanation of the aspect of practice is twofold: 1. Brief presentation; 2. Extensive explanation.
