Thereupon, a solitary dwelling (monastic cell) is built, and an attendant is appointed; with the nine methods of mental abiding, shamatha (calm abiding) is accomplished. Moreover, with the four applications of mindfulness and so forth, vipassana (insight) wisdom is generated, and by traversing the five paths and thirty-seven aids to enlightenment, the four results are attained. Regarding the harmonious Sojong (restoration and purification): According to Karma Shatam, there are five types of harmonious Sojong: namely, the Sojong of the fourteenth day, the Sojong of the fifteenth day, the (39N) auspicious Sojong, the Sojong for expelling harm, and the harmonious Sojong, thus five. From these five: The first is: The great Lotsawa Dharma Shri stated: Regarding the months aligned with the Tibetan calendar, During the waning moon of the eleventh, first, third, fifth, Seventh, and ninth months, The number of days is fourteen. So it is stated. The second is: For the remaining, For each of the two halves of the month (waxing and waning phases), The number of days should be known as fifteen. Any other assertion contrary to this is mistaken. So it is stated. Among these, Tsonapa and Jyadul and others, starting from the first day of the waning moon of the tenth Tibetan month, designated the beginning of winter as the commencing month for calculation. After one and a half months had passed from then, the fourteenth day of the waning moon of the eleventh Tibetan month was taken as the fourteenth day of the victorious month (Jayal-da). Buton and others started from the sixteenth day of the ninth month. Ancient masters like Chims started from the sixteenth day of the eighth month, and the Sixth Shamarpa was in agreement with Buton. In any case, there are six fourteen-day Sojongs and eighteen fifteen-day Sojongs. On these days, the fixed-time Sojong should be performed. The location for this is like a realized being's cave, like a constructed house, or like under a tree's shade, where a boundary, whether large or small, is set. The practitioners are the five groups of ordained monastics. In the preparatory stage, if a transgression occurs, confession, demarcation, and blessing are performed. With a properly measured gaṇḍi (gong/bell), the sangha is assembled, and the 'Perpetual Three' (Gyünchak Sum-pa) and 'Sutra Praising Excellent Morality' (Tsültrim Rab-ngak Kyi Do) are recited and listened to. For those who, due to pure disposition and corresponding aspiration, are unable to gather, the experienced practice of Sojong is performed. During the main practice, the Sthavira (elder) recites the 'Pratimokṣa Sutra' (So-thar Kyi Do), and afterwards, dedications and aspirations are made, and so forth. In that place, if there are fewer than three bhikshus, they sit before one another and perform the blessing. If there is only oneself, one mentally contemplates and recites. If even that cannot be accomplished... (text cut off)

Approximately three and a half verses of the Buddha's (39b) ancient Posadha should be recited. In such cases, the standard for a Sthavira (Elder) is: generally, one called a 'Sthavira like a royal regent' is someone who has completed full ordination for more than twenty years; and one called a 'Sthavira like a lion' is someone who has completed full ordination for twenty years and is expert in the Vinaya, being self-reliant and not needing to depend on others. One called a 'Sthavira like a child' is someone who, even having completed full ordination for sixty years, does not know the Vinaya; and one called a 'Sthavira like craving/lust' is someone whose precepts are corrupted. Among these four types explained, only the former two are adopted. The third (occasion) is: during auspicious times such as consecration (Rabnas); and during times when rain is too heavy or too little, or when mice, parrots, sparrows, evil kings, etc., appear, and inauspicious things need to be made auspicious. The fourth (occasion) is: to avert harms such as hail, robbers, epidemics, etc., that have already occurred, or to prevent them from recurring. The fifth (occasion) is: to perform Posadha in order to reconcile/unite a divided Sangha. In this way, these three Posadhas of indefinite time (such as for auspiciousness, etc.)—except for the special feature that their respective times must be stated during the proclamation ritual (Karma Vacana)—all other procedures are similar to the Posadha of fixed time. Second: The Vassa (Rainy Season Retreat). There are two types of Vassa, early and late, concluding at the end of three months. There are two types of Vassa: early Vassa and late Vassa. The distinction between these two is: if it is early Vassa, it is on the first day of the waning moon of the Drozhun month, the last summer month; and if it is late (Vassa), it is from the first day of the waning moon of the Khrum Zla, the autumn month, that they undertake Vassa for three months. Buton (Rinchen Drub) and others have stated that it is excellent to undertake early Vassa on the sixteenth day of the intercalary month, and the Sixth Red Hat Karmapa also held this view. In any case, without long preparations involving disputes or dissolutions, and since there are Tripitaka holders (monks who preserve the scriptures) and others, to fulfill the conditions for dwelling peacefully, the monastery (Gtsug lag khang) etc., were cleaned in advance. After the short preparation Posadha (Nye-sbyor Posadha), tooth-sticks (or symbolic items) are distributed, and dwelling places (40a) are provided. For the actual Vassa, in a place with both outer and inner coverings (or boundaries), in front of the Bhikshus, by reciting the oath three times, they undertake the Vassa, and without consecration, without staying outside the boundary until dawn breaks, they diligently engage in hearing, contemplation, and meditation, after which the Pravarana (lifting of restrictions) should be performed. Third: The Pravarana (Lifting of Restrictions). (Pravarana can be performed) both at fixed times and at unfixed times.
