Thus. \t\t\tDeviating from the norm, one should not teach to ten people. \t\t\tThe seventh, concerning the manner of teaching Dharma, there are twenty-six (rules): \t\t\tWhen the listener is seated and not ill, one oneself should not teach while standing; similarly, \t\t\tone should not teach while lying down, or sitting on a high or large seat; and \t\t\tto one walking in front, teaching from behind; and to one in the middle, teaching from the front; \t\t\twith head wrapped, clothes raised, or the upper robe draped over both shoulders; \t\t\twith hands crossed on the neck or behind the back; \t\t\twith hair tied in a topknot, wearing a hat, or adorned with a diadem; \t\t\twith flower garlands, silk, etc., wrapped around the head; \t\t\triding on an elephant or horse, or sitting in a palanquin or other vehicle; \t\t\twearing shoes and holding a staff or umbrella in hand; \t\t\tcarrying weapons such as swords, bows, and arrows; and \t\t\twearing armor, one should not teach (the Dharma). \t\t\tThe eighth, the three modes of practice (sādhanā) for those without illness: \t\t\tone should not excrete feces or urine while standing, in water, or amidst green grass; \t\tnor should one discard saliva, nasal mucus, or vomit, etc., into water. \t\t\tThe ninth, one rule concerning movement, without causing harm: \t\t\tone should not climb excessively high on trees. \t\t\tThus, these one hundred and thirteen minor offenses, if committed, merely constitute an offense; (38v) conversely, they must be learned (and avoided), and therefore it is said so. \t\t\tTherefore, upon seeing the neatly folded robes, with a pleasing and tranquil demeanor, one should enter the alms-house, sit with a composed posture, and partake in food and drink with mindfulness. With manifest mindfulness, one should engage in Dharma discourse at appropriate times to gladden (the listeners). \t\t\tSummarizing the five categories of downfalls, there are two hundred and fifty-three precepts for a Bhikṣu. All of them, when summarized, fall into two \t\t\tAmong these, 'transgressions inherent by nature' refers to actions that are renowned as sinful for all worldly beings, including householders, such as taking a life. \t\t\t'Transgressions established by (the Buddha)' refers to actions that renunciants are not allowed to practice, but which are renowned as not sinful for householders, such as eating food in the afternoon. \t\t\tAll of these, in this context, are known as 'downfalls' because if they are committed, one falls into an unfortunate rebirth, and thus they are so called. \t\t\t(P2) The second, the precepts for a Bhikṣuṇī: \t\t\tFor Bhikṣuṇīs, there are three hundred and sixty

Four. For Bhikshunis, there are eight root downfalls (parajikas), twenty remaining offenses, thirty-three offenses requiring relinquishment and confession (niḥsargika pātayantika), one hundred and eighty downfalls (pātayantika), eleven individual confession offenses (pratideśanīya), and one hundred and twelve wrongdoings (duṣkṛta), totaling three hundred and sixty-four. However, since there are no practices of these in this place and time, they are not elaborated. If one wishes to understand them, one should learn elsewhere. Prohibitive precepts are adverse conditions to morality. All these are to be abandoned, as they are adverse conditions to the prohibitive precepts and morality. Therefore, one should guard them by recognizing them. N2. Second, the fulfilling precepts. From the scriptures: The foundation of going forth (renunciation) and purification (Posadha), Restriction (Pravāraṇā), summer (rainy season retreat, Vassa) and the leather foundation, Medicine, robes, and firm bedding (38b), Kauśāmbī and the foundation of action, Those with ochre and yellow (robes) and individuals, Transferring and the establishment of purification (Posadha), Dwellings and disputes, And schism in the Sangha are summarized. Thus, it is taught as seventeen bases. What is called a “base” (Vastu) is, from the term “vastu”, the meaning of being the support for the three trainings (Trisikṣā). Among these, the first has already been mentioned above. The other sixteen, if summarized, are five: P1. Basis for the complete purification of training. P2. Basis for the conditions of dwelling happily. P3. Basis for actions related to special rituals. P4. Basis for rectification to purify transgressions. P5. Bases for dwellings, abandoning the two extremes. P1. The first of these has two: F1. Brief explanation. F2. Extensive explanation. F1. The first is: On the basis of accomplishment, there are three complete purifications of training. The first of the seventeen renowned bases of fulfilling precepts, the basis for completely purifying training, is three. F2. The second [extensive explanation] has three: B1. Purification (Posadha). B2. Summer retreat (Vassa). B3. Restriction (Pravāraṇā). B1. The first is: Tranquility (Shamatha) purification (Posadha) trains mind and wisdom. auspicious half-months in concordance. Pacifying harm and averting disputes are to be done at that time. That purification (Posadha) which nourishes the virtues of the three trainings (Trisikṣā) and purifies transgressions and downfalls has two aspects: The purification (Posadha) of tranquility (Shamatha) is: one who is endowed with morality and the noble lineage of non-attachment, meaning endowed with contentment and few desires, first hears the Tripitaka, which is the cause of the path, and contemplates its meaning.
