All are pervaded by emptiness and lack of inherent existence. If the thoroughly established (paratantra) were truly existent, would it then possess the three phases of birth, abiding, and cessation, or going, coming, change, alteration, direction, time, singularity, plurality, and so forth? The answer is no. If these were present, it would necessarily imply their unreality. These conventional phenomena are unrelated to anything. There is no birth, abiding, or cessation; no going or coming. It is neither singular nor plural, neither cause nor effect. It abandons the three aspects of its own nature: the characteristic, the characterized, and the basis of characterization, and is free from all elaborations such as direction and time, thus it is naturally permanent. Since it cannot be divided into separate parts, it is partless. As it is the reality of all phenomena, it is held to be all-pervasive and omnipresent. Most other presentations of ground, path, and fruition accord with the teachings of the Mind-Only (Cittamatra) school. \t\t\tSection 2 [Explanation of how to be free from the faults of the Mind-Only school]: \t\t\tIt is said that the nature of the false discriminative consciousness is truly existent. \t\t\tThis, which becomes the object of the mind, is indeed primordial wisdom. \t\t\tAlthough posited as truly existent, since it is unconditioned. \t\t\tIt is free from the fault of asserting ultimate reality as an entity. \t\t\tIn the widely known Mind-Only False Conception (Cittamatra Vikalpa) school in Tibet, it is explained that the nature of the alaya-vijñana (store-consciousness) is asserted as truly existent. Thus, consciousness, having become an object of the mind, is considered an entity. However, in this system, although the nature of primordial wisdom, which transcends consciousness and is free from all elaborations, is accepted as truly existent, because this wisdom, free from elaborations, is unconditioned, it is said to be freed from all the faults of asserting ultimate truth (280r) as an entity. \t\t\tSection 3 [Explanation of the distinction between Shentong (Other-Emptiness) and Rangtong (Self-Emptiness), etc.]: \t\t\tIn the manner of Shentong and Rangtong, conventional emptiness, \t\t\tIn meditative equipoise, there is no difference in the cessation of conceptual elaborations. \t\t\tRegarding subsequent attainment, conventional phenomenal reality, whether existent or non-existent, \t\t\tThe ultimate ascertainment of primordial wisdom, whether truly existent or not, is the distinction. \t\t\tEven ultimate truth, whose nature is not truly established, \t\t\tIs considered merely a nihilistic emptiness, a reified emptiness. \t\t\tThe wisdom of two emptinesses is established upon self-cognizing awareness. \t\t\tThis is held to be a profound view integrating Sutra and Tantra. \t\t\tBoth the renowned Shentong and Rangtong Madhyamaka schools establish that all phenomena encompassed by conventional truth are empty.

Regarding the manner of engagement and the cessation of all conceptual elaborations in meditative equipoise, there is no difference. However, during the stage of subsequent attainment (post-meditation) for distinguishing philosophical tenets, merely in terms of conventional assertion, regarding the way of establishing cognitive and verbal conventions such as “the dharmata (suchness) exists” and “it does not exist,” and when ultimate analysis is finally conducted by the reasoning that examines the ultimate truth, there is a difference in view regarding whether the non-dual pristine awareness is truly established or not established. \t\t\tTherefore, the Shentong (gZhan stong) proponents hold that both the imaginarily constructed (kun brtags) and the dependent (gZhan dbang) are conventional truths, while the perfectly accomplished (yongs grub) is the ultimate truth. Furthermore, the view that it is merely a non-affirming negation of “not truly established” is considered an inert emptiness (bem stong), and is not regarded as the true nature of ultimate emptiness in the manner of conventional emptiness. In short, they posit this (ultimate truth) as the pristine awareness (ye shes) free from the duality of subject and object, self-cognizing (so so rang rig pa). This system is considered to be in excellent accord with the intentions of the great Tantric scriptures, and thus, it is also regarded as a profound view that bridges both Sutra and Tantra, reaching the pinnacle among the Madhyamaka systems. \t\t\tHerein, the essence of refuting others' imputed (280b) extremes is summarized. From the teachings of the Venerable Protector Tara (rje btsun sgrol ba'i mgon po), others questioned from the Laṅkāvatāra Sūtra (laṅkar gshegs pa): “If the Tathāgatagarbha (bde gshegs snying po) possesses marks and signs (mtshan dpe can), would it not be similar to the self (bdag) of the Tīrthikas (mu stegs pa / non-Buddhists)?” In response, it was said: “It is not similar, because it is emptiness (stong pa nyid). ” \t\t\tThe Tathāgatagarbha (bde gshegs snying po) is not truly existent. If it possessed marks and signs, it would become a Tīrthika (mu stegs pa) tenet. Therefore, to assert that “that which is utterly unestablished, like space, is called Tathāgatagarbha” is a cognitive error clinging to one's own faulty philosophical tenet, mistaking all emptiness (stong nyid) for the meaning of “not truly existent,” and identifying it merely as “signless and utterly unestablished.” Because the Sūtras also state that the reason for its dissimilarity with Tīrthikas is emptiness, and not the absence of marks and signs. Thus, to claim that “the Tathāgatagarbha, complete with clear marks and signs, is an interpretive meaning (drang don)” is merely an act of deceiving the world with lies. \t\t\tFurthermore, the assertion that “to consider the essence (snying po) as permanent (rtag pa) is a Tīrthika (mu stegs) view” is merely a refutation of the Sūtras on the essence (snying po'i mdo rnams). It is also illogical to understand the meaning of “permanent” as merely “continuous permanence,” because mere continuous permanence applies even to saṃsāra (khor ba) and all apprehending and apprehended (gzung 'dzin kun).
