Regarding the method of explanation of the Yogacara-Madhyamaka, and the method of explanation of the Uttaratantra as the Ultimate Definitely Real Madhyamaka, there are these two, [this is] Zilong Panchen's assertion. Furthermore, although there is no great difference in the nature of these two views, explaining the ultimate as three vehicles, and certain modes of explanation not adopted in the Uttaratantra (as per original page 277), these belong to the tradition of Maitreya's initial teachings. Explaining the ultimate as one vehicle, and the modes of explanation such as the ground of ignorance-imprints, and taking rebirth through undefiled karma, are the intention of the Uttaratantra. These are also for the common and uncommon disciples to cut off elaborations through hearing and contemplation, and to understand the explanation of ultimate definite reality through meditation. Although most Tibetans explain that stating the ultimate three vehicles does not make it a Madhyamaka treatise. However, the masters who uphold this view assert that merely stating that Hearers (Shravakas) and Solitary Realizers (Pratyekabuddhas) attain nirvana without remainder and do not enter the Mahayana path, cannot make it non-Madhyamaka. This is because establishing it as Madhyamaka is from the perspective of the view. Scholarly masters like Pema Nangtsul (Padma Angtsul) and others stated that all knowables have a single taste in emptiness, all sentient beings are pervaded by the essence of the Tathagata (Sugata-garbha), and all are suitable to attain Buddhahood, these characteristics of the Madhyamikas are also present here. Jonang Kunkhyen Chenpo (Jonang Omniscient Great One) said: In all five Maitreya treatises, there is no different view. The view of self-emptiness (Rangtong) is not explained in the Abhisamayalankara. The ultimate three vehicles and the degeneration of lineage (rigs chad) are not explained anywhere. Therefore, these two distinctions of superior and inferior are not made in other-emptiness (Shentong) Madhyamaka. Although Tibetans explain this Madhyamaka system of Maitreya's three treatises as the Chittamatra-false-aspectarian system. However, generally, the terminology of true-aspect and false-aspect, based on Chittamatra, is merely arbitrarily designated by Tibetans. In the treatises, only two instances appear when establishing whether the appearing aspect of consciousness, which appears as objects, is true or false. Especially, Panchen Shakchogpa said: If one holds that the view of the Uttaratantra is the view of Chittamatra, then there are no scriptural citations and reasonings to prove that. For this system, the authoritative scriptural citations and reasonings... (original text ends here).

That does not arise. If one were to establish or refute the Madhyamaka view through scriptures and reasonings drawn from other traditions, then one would not find Madhyamikas who correctly uphold the Madhyamaka view. If the Madhyamaka explained by the Venerable Maitreya and Asanga could not be established there, then no other valid witnesses could be found in this teaching. As for Bhavaviveka and Kamalasila, they are noble beings, and the Buddha, through the reasoning of prophecy, established Nagarjuna's system as Madhyamaka. And this (prophecy) also exists here. If explaining ultimate truth as thoroughly established (by conceptual fabrication) would mean it is not Madhyamaka, then how could the many earlier and later Tibetans who assert emptiness as a non-affirming negation of ultimate truth be Madhyamikas? Therefore, according to the system of Maitreya and Asanga, there are no other Sutras or Shastras that teach the Madhyamaka view distinct from the Madhyamaka presented in Maitreya's later Dharma teachings. This is not merely evident from Maitreya's root texts, but also becomes clear simply by reading the Four Summaries (or Four Compendia) and the Two Vows (or Two Compendia of Discipline). That is, it explicitly states that the Sutras which teach all phenomena as devoid of intrinsic nature are not to be taken literally, and if one were to assert them literally, one would fall into nihilism (278na), as is clearly demonstrated by this very system. And so forth, it is said. Section 2: Detailed exposition of the presentations, comprising three parts: 1. How the two truths are established; 2. How to be liberated from the faults of the Mind-Only school; 3. How to distinguish between self-emptiness (rang stong) and other-emptiness (gzhan stong), etc. Section 1: The first is: First, unreal imaginings conventionally exist. Grasper and grasped are merely imputed by mind, they do not truly exist. The Dharma-nature of pristine wisdom free from elaborations, Upon it, adventitious defilements too can be separated. Moreover, in the *Madhyantavibhaga* it is said: The unreal imaginative (nature) exists, But the two (grapser and grasped) do not exist in it. Emptiness exists in this (unreal imaginative nature), And that (emptiness) also exists in that (emptiness). It is neither empty nor non-empty, Therefore, everything is explained. Due to existence, due to non-existence, due to existence, This is the Middle Way. Thus it is stated. Firstly, in order to cut off the elaborations of conventional reality...
