As practitioners of common understanding, here, the reasons for establishing the non-self of phenomena are exclusively the five types of reasoning, such as the reasoning of being free from singularity and plurality when examining the nature. \t\t\tThe definitive reasoning for establishing the non-self of persons in the ultimate sense is one: through the seven-fold analysis of the chariot, like the example, establishing the non-self of persons by reasoning, which is the king of reasons. \t\t\tHere, elaborating further, first, among the five types of reasoning: \t\t\tThe reasoning of examining the nature, free from singularity and plurality, demonstrates the door to liberation — emptiness. \t\t\tIts proof (or thesis statement) is: All phenomena, such as sprouts, are the subject; they are not truly existent, because they are devoid of true singularity and plurality. For example, like reflections in a mirror. \t\t\tThe subject of that proof is merely an appearance that has not been examined or investigated. In this regard, the established property is not truly singular, because it has parts. It is not truly plural, because there is no truly singular composing agent. \t\t\tIts pervasion is: If truly existent, it must necessarily be either singular or plural, because these two are mutually exclusive and contradictory (272a) and are also accepted, thus it is established. \t\t\tThe second reasoning is: examining the cause. This reasoning, like the Diamond Particles argument that shatters the mountain of wrong views of substantialists, demonstrates the door to liberation — signlessness. \t\t\tFirst, its proof (or thesis statement) is: Sprouts are the subject; they have no true arising, because they do not arise from self, other, both, or neither. For example, like reflections. \t\t\tSecond, the pervasion of the method of establishment is: It is not extensively explained in the treatise, as it is easily understood that arising does not go beyond any of the four extremes, whether by way of inherent nature, objective aspect, or analytical aspect. \t\t\tAmong the four ways of establishing the property of the subject, first, the establishment of the proof of no arising from self: The Samkhyas assert that sprouts are merely transformations of the Primal Matter, and Primal Matter is its nature, thus they are believed to arise from an already established, eternal entity of their own nature. If that were the case, it would be unreasonable for the seed to cease by the force of the sprout's arising, leading to an endless arising of the seed. And if one asserts that the causal seed does not cease, then the arising of the fruit (sprout) and its color and form would not be found. If self arises from self, then all actions and agents would become one, and so forth. \t\t\tSecond, the establishment of the proof of no arising from other...

However, while the way that some realists refute the self-arising asserted by the Samkhya school is good, all those things that are consistent with reason arise from the four conditions (causal condition, immediately preceding condition, object condition, dominant condition), and most phenomena arise from causal and dominant conditions. Moreover, both cause and effect are not merely imputed by the mind, but are established from their own objective side. After investigation and analysis, they assert that other-arising is established by valid cognition. Although there are many reasons to refute this (view), they can be summarized into two: 'the impossibility of arising from others' and 'the impossibility of other (causes/conditions) at the time of arising'. The first (impossibility of arising from others) is: if all non-causes could produce all non-effects, then barley and rice seeds would both be similar in being other entities established by their own nature from a rice sprout. (This has) pervasion. If they were established as such distinct entities, they would be like the right and left horns that are not mutually dependent at present. Even if this were the case, if cause and effect could mutually generate, then it would be meaningless that the proximate cause of a rice seed does not produce a barley sprout. [Second] 'The impossibility of other (causes/conditions) at the time of arising' is: if it is asserted that a sprout arises from a seed, then these two should not be considered as distinct substances, because the characteristic of distinct substances, established from the objective side, cannot exist in things that are not simultaneous. And the simultaneity of cause and effect is refuted by reason. This is because the arising and ceasing of cause and effect, like the high and low ends of a scale, cannot be simultaneous. Furthermore, it is also refuted by investigating whether, if cause and effect were simultaneous, the effect that already exists is produced, or the effect that does not exist is produced. Third, the proof of 'no dual arising' is: since these two (impossibility of arising from others and impossibility of other at the time of arising) are implicitly refuted, their extensive refutation was not expounded. Fourth, the 'refutation of causelessness' is: if phenomena were to arise causelessly, then all things would either arise all the time or never arise at all, and so on, leading to excessively many absurdities. (Phenomena) would become impossible to appear, like a lotus in the sky, which contradicts the direct perception of clearly manifest cause and effect. Furthermore, the mistaken philosophical view that asserts there is no past or future existence and that body and mind are of the nature of arising (dependent origination) is extensively explained as being established by the mistaken direct perception that apprehends arising. Third, an extension from the refutation of other-arising, the investigation of the effect, which is the 'refutation of existing or non-existing arising,' is the exposition of the door to liberation without aspiration. Some say that the effect already existed at the time of the cause...
