Therefore, it is asserted that because sesame oil pre-exists in sesame seeds, sesame oil arises; just as because sesame oil does not pre-exist in sand, it does not arise. Regarding the refutation of that (view), from four lines of reasoning: 'As for phenomena, their arising would be meaningless, because they are already accomplished at the time of the cause.' This is a *prasanga* (reductio ad absurdum) that states a contradiction. If (one says) 'the pervasion is uncertain,' then (phenomena) would arise without end, because they would arise even if already accomplished. This is a rejoinder of equal footing (equal counter-reasoning). If (one says) 'these two are not analogous, because a pot at the stage of a clay lump arises, but a manifestly apparent pot does not arise; therefore, there is a difference between these two in terms of manifestness or non-manifestness,' then (the statement) 'at the stage of the clay lump, there is an unmanifest pot' is analogous to the root *pratijna* (thesis to be proven). This is an unproven (fallacy) where the reason (establishing proof) is analogous to the *pratijna* (thesis). Therefore, as for external and internal phenomena, they do not arise from themselves, because they exist. This is an inference known (or accepted) by others (i.e., a well-known inference). Regarding the assertion of our own proponents of existence (realists) that (phenomena) arise from others: 'Seed and sprout would naturally not be other, because a sprout arises from a seed.' This is a *prasanga* (reductio ad absurdum) that states a contradiction. If (one says) 'the pervasion is uncertain,' then a thick darkness would also arise from a flame, because it would arise even if it is naturally other. This is a rejoinder of equal footing. If (one says) 'there is a difference in whether there is the capacity to produce or not,' then (the statement) 'that is analogous to the root *pratijna* (thesis to be proven).' This is an unproven (fallacy) where the reason (establishing proof) is analogous to the *pratijna* (thesis). (269na) Therefore, a sprout does not arise from a seed, because seed and sprout are naturally other. This is an inference known (or accepted) by others. The Naked Ascetics (Jainas) assert that (phenomena) arise from both self and other. They say that the arising of a clay pot from the very nature of clay itself is the meaning of 'arising from self,' and its arising from the potter, string, water, and so forth, is the meaning of 'arising from other.' The reasoning for refuting this (view) is that it is refuted by those reasonings that refute arising from self and arising from other individually. From the *Madhyamakāvatāra* (Engaging in the Middle Way): 'Arising from both is also not in the nature of reason, because...'

Therefore. Because those faults that have been explained have all come to pass. Because it has been explained thus. Lokāyatas (or Cārvākas) hold that this world arises without cause. There are four refutations for this: The first is: Regarding this world, the probandum is that it cannot be apprehended by direct perception, because it is uncaused. This is stating a contradiction. If it is said that its pervasion is not certain, then the scent and color of a sky-utpala (blue lotus) should also be apprehensible, because it is uncaused yet apprehensible. This is an equalization of similar reasons. If it is said that there is a difference between those two, in terms of existence and non-existence of their essence, then that is similar to the fundamental probandum; this is an unproven assertion where the proving reason is identical to the probandum. Therefore, regarding this world, the probandum is that it does not arise from no cause, because it arises intermittently; this is an inference based on what is renowned to others. Conventional apprehending awareness pervades mistaken consciousness, Again, deluded conventionalities, performing functions or not, are equal. The two truths are posited by mistaken and non-mistaken (awareness), In short, the ultimate explanation of the aggregate of wisdom. Furthermore, in this system, conventional apprehending awareness pervades mistaken consciousness (folio 269b). As stated in the *Bodhicittāvatāra* (Commentary on Bodhicitta): In the state of waking from a dream, There is no difference in performing functions. Just as illusory or dream horses and elephants, and actual horses and elephants, or painted cows and actual cows, for mistaken perception, their functions are equal; and for enlightened perception, their non-functions are equal. Although there is delusion in the objects of worldly conventionality and yogic conventionality, that is not our own system. Our own system holds that yogic conventionality is merely without delusion; and the two truths are posited such that conventional nature appears as false in the face of mistaken awareness, and ultimate nature appears in the face of non-mistaken awareness. The object attained by false perception is the characteristic of the former (conventionality). Generally, it is ignorance; specifically, grasping at true existence; particularly, the ignorance in the continuum of an ordinary being is its exemplified basis. The object attained by correct perception is the characteristic of the latter (ultimacy). The wisdom that directly realizes non-true existence (emptiness), which is the antithesis of ignorance, is its exemplified basis. In the *Madhyamakāvatāra* (Entering the Middle Way), it is stated: All phenomena also
