(It is said) that which arises from causes, is empty upon examination, and appears in accordance with its own type, possessing these four characteristics, such as forms, are the correct conventional truths, and they each have their respective functions. That which appears but has no function, such as seeing falling hairs or two moons, and other mistaken conventional truths, have no effective function, and therefore, such a distinction is made. Negating true substantiality establishes non-affirming negation. The cessation of arising and so forth is the enumerative ultimate truth. The ultimate cessation of proliferations is the ultimate ultimate truth. Not affirming the Alaya-vijnana, consciousness gathers as the six collections. The resultant wisdom's appearance is held to be like an illusion. Regarding the ultimate truth established by the non-affirming negation that refutes the apprehension of true substantiality in these knowable objects, it is also divided into two: the enumerative ultimate truth, which merely negates true arising and so forth, but is not free from the proliferations of non-arising; and the ultimate ultimate truth (267b), where all proliferations such as arising and non-arising are completely pacified. These two distinctions are taught in the (treatise on) the Two Truths. Most of these masters do not accept the Alaya-vijnana, holding that consciousness is a collection of the six consciousnesses. However, some Yogacara-Madhyamikas also accept the eight collections, including the Alaya-vijnana. They hold that the resultant appearances of the Buddha-body and wisdom attained at the culmination of the path exist like an illusion, inherently. J2. Second, presenting the system of Prasangika Madhyamaka, which has four parts: W1. Briefly state Chandrakirti's tradition. W2. Generally explain how early treatises elucidate Madhyamaka. W3. Distinguish in detail the ground, path, and result. W4. Primarily summarize the meaning of the philosophical tenets. W1. First, (it is said): Chandrakirti's system is uniquely supreme in cutting off the proliferations of characteristics. There are no autonomous inferences (independent reasonings). Only from the perspective of others, his own system is free from assertions. The tradition of Acarya Chandrakirti, who clearly elucidated the intention of the noble treatises and made prominent the system of Buddhapalita, is uniquely supreme and preeminent in cutting off the proliferations of characteristics. This is the exemplary instance of Prasangika Madhyamaka. There is no establishment of autonomous inferences that prove by the power of facts (or valid cognition) with a three-part logical reason. (Regarding) non-arising and emptiness, etc.

In order to refute others' wrong conceptions, one accepts from an external perspective; as for the realists (such as the Vaibhashikas and Sautrantikas of Hinayana, and the Yogacarins and Svātantrika Madhyamikas of Mahayana, who assert inherent existence), it is merely a *prasanga* (consequence) that points out their internal contradictions; since one's own system has no positive thesis to establish, it is free from making any assertions. The worldly renowned direct perception, inference, reliable testimony, and analogy; Others' renowned inference, *prasanga* (consequence) that states contradiction; And parity of reason, and unestablished (thesis) that is not in agreement (with the proven); By these four valid cognitions and four reasons (refutation, consequence, parity, unestablished), refutations and establishments are made. Therefore, from the perspective of one's own system (Prasangika Madhyamaka), there is nothing to be refuted or established, whether by simple negation (negating the existence of something without implying anything else) or implicative negation (negating something while implying the existence of something else); however, from another's perspective, the worldly renowned four: direct perception, inference, reliable testimony, and analogy, and the four (268a): inference renowned to others, *prasanga* that states contradiction, parity of reason, and unestablished (thesis) where the *sādhana* and *sādhya* are not in agreement, by these four valid cognitions and four reasons (refutation, consequence, parity of reason, unestablished), refutations and establishments are made. Here, Dharma King Gorampa said: To refute self-production, there is the *prasanga* that states contradiction; to refute other-production, there is parity of reason; to refute production from both (self and other), there is the unestablished (thesis) where the *sādhana* and *sādhya* are not in agreement; to refute causeless production, there is inference renowned to others. Serdokpa Dönyö Pal said: "Even if one is omniscient (referring to Gorampa), one still needs to study Madhyamaka." That is to say, by the *prasanga* that states contradiction, an undesired consequence is applied to the reason (sign) asserted by others; and by parity of reason, the pervasion of that *prasanga* is established in the mind of the opponent through an example; and by the unestablished (thesis) where *sādhana* and *sādhya* are not in agreement, it is shown that others cannot extract the thorn (refute the consequence) thus applied. By these three *prasangas*, after establishing the *pakṣa-dharma* (property of the subject) and pervasion renowned to others in the mind of the opponent, then, by the reason (sign) renowned to others, an inference is generated in the mind of the opponent. This is how he explains it. Therefore, (he) asserted that these four uncommon lines of reasoning of the Prasangikas (i.e., *prasanga*, parity of reason, unestablished, and inference renowned to others) are also applied to refute each of the four extremes of production. Since these are the principal among the lines of reasoning, they will be explained in a bit more detail: That is, first, the Sāṃkhya school asserts self-production. The meaning of self-production is: things are produced only if they already exist at the time of the cause; what does not exist is not produced. (268b) For example:
