Not from itself, nor from another, Not from both, nor without cause. Whatever thing, wherever it may be, Never is there birth. This is the meaning, Regarding the way this meaning is explained: Acarya Buddhapalita (སངས་རྒྱས་བསྐྱངས་, Sangye Kyang) refuted wrong views by asserting the non-arising from the four extremes (fourfold negation of production), but did not put forth any positive proofs. Following that, Acarya Bhavaviveka (ལེགས་ལྡན་འབྱེད་, Lekden Jed) criticized the way Acarya Buddhapalita presented his refutations, and established his main arguments as “autonomous syllogisms” (རང་རྒྱུད་, rang gyud), also proving the subject property through autonomous syllogisms. Following that, Chandrakirti (ཟླ་བའི་ཞབས་, Dawe Zhab) explained that Bhavaviveka's criticisms of Buddhapalita were not applicable, and he (Chandrakirti) stated that Bhavaviveka's acceptance of autonomous syllogisms when explaining ultimate reasoning was flawed, thereby extensively elucidating the tradition of the Prasangika (consequentialist) system (ཐལ་འགྱུར་གྱི་ཤིང་རྟའི་སྲོལ་, Thal gyur gyi shing rta'i srol). Among the Acaryas who upheld the Svatantrika system (རང་རྒྱུད་ལུགས་, Rang Gyud Lug) are Bhavyaviveka (བྷ་བྱ, Bhabya) or Lekden Jed (ལེགས་ལྡན་བྱེད་), Palbas (དཔལ་སྦས་), Yeshe Nyingpo (ཡེ་ཤེས་སྙིང་པོ་), Shantarakshita (ཞི་བ་འཚོ་), Kamalashila (ཀ་མ་ལ་ཤཱི་ལ་), Drol De (གྲོལ་སྡེ་), Seng Zang (སེང་བཟང་), Yeshe Zhab (ཡེ་ཤེས་ཞབས་), Marmé Dzé Zangpo (མར་མེ་མཛད་བཟང་པོ་), Men Zhab (སྨན་ཞབས་), Tagna (ཐག་ན་) and many others, though there are numerous more. To summarize the categories, there are two: the Sutrantika-Madhyamaka (མདོ་སྡེ་སྤྱོད་པའི་དབུ་མ་, Do Dé Chödpe Uma) and the Yogachara-Madhyamaka (རྣལ་འབྱོར་སྤྱོད་པའི་དབུ་མ་, Naljor Chödpe Uma). The reason for such a division is that Lekden Jed (Bhavaviveka) stated there are two types of Madhyamikas according to Nagarjuna's treatises, from the perspective of others: the coarser “outer Madhyamikas” (ཕྱིའི་དབུ་མ་པ་, Chyi'i Umapa) who conventionally assert external objects, and the subtler “inner Madhyamikas” (ནང་གི་དབུ་མ་པ་, Nang gi Umapa) who conventionally assert that there are no external objects apart from consciousness itself. The Sutrantika-Madhyamikas (མདོ་སྡེ་སྤྱོད་པའི་དབུ་མ་པ་, Do Dé Chödpe Umapa) are the coarser outer Madhyamikas. An example is Lekden Zhab (Bhavaviveka) and his followers. They accept that their tenets, such as emptiness and non-arising, are to be established by valid cognition. In order to establish these by valid cognition, they put forth syllogisms (གཏན་ཚིགས, gtan tsigs) that are established through the force of things (དངོས་པོ་སྟོབས་ཞུགས་ཀྱིས་གྲུབ་པ, dngos po stobs zhugs kyis grub pa), having the three modes (ཚུལ་གསུམ་, tshul gsum). They also conventionally accept external objects and present their explanations in accordance with the Sutrantikas (མདོ་སྡེ་པ་, Do Dépa).

[The system of Yogācāra-Madhyamaka] is: \t\t\tŚāntarakṣita and others only assert consciousness; \t\t\tThey do not assert external objects, and their establishment is like that of the Cittamātra (Mind-Only) school. \t\t\tSecond, the Yogācāra-Madhyamaka, as taught by Leg-ldan-hbyed (Bhāviveka), is a more subtle inner Madhyamaka. Its exemplars are Śāntarakṣita and so forth. \t\t\tThe way they establish their own system's assertions is no different from the former. Conventionally, they assert only consciousness and do not assert external objects. Their establishment is also made consistent with the Yogācāra Cittamātra school. \t\t\tSecond, a brief explanation of the establishment of their tenets: \t\t\tAll phenomena conventionally exist before a deluded consciousness; \t\t\tUltimately, they do not exist before an undeluded consciousness. \t\t\tCharacterized by being able to be refuted by reasoning or not, \t\t\tThe two truths are one in essence but differ in their isolates. \t\t\tBy their ability or inability to perform a function, \t\t\tConventional truths are established as correct and incorrect. \t\t\tMadhyamikas subsume all knowable phenomena into two truths. Here, “knowable” is the basis of division, and “two truths” are the categories of division. According to the Svātantrika system here, conventional truth exists before the cognition of a deluded mind, an example of which is a pot. Ultimate truth, when examined by an undeluded mind, does not exist; an example of this is the emptiness of a pot from true existence. Truth (bden pa) is the non-deceptive meaning for the respective objects of deluded and undeluded minds. Any phenomenon that lacks inherent existence, meaning its own nature is empty of true existence, is the characteristic of mere “truth.” Anything that cannot withstand examination by reasoning (page 267 upper), meaning that it can be refuted, is the characteristic of conventional truth. Anything that can withstand examination by reasoning, meaning that it cannot be refuted, is the characteristic of ultimate truth. Regarding these two truths, generally, there are many assertions concerning their isolates, such as there being no difference even in their mere definitional isolates, being different in nomenclature, being different in essence, being inexpressible as another entity or as the same, being different merely by negation, and being one in essence but different in isolates. In this system, many adhere to the latter view. \t\t\tIf conventional truth is categorized, it is established as correct conventional truth and incorrect conventional truth by two types: “appearing and able to perform a function” and “appearing but unable to perform a function.” \t\t\tFurthermore, it appears and is able to perform a function in accordance with the appearance.
