Therefore, If one specifically negates, it also becomes dangerous. Because if appearances are negated, emptiness will become a meaning of 'no substance'; and a yogi meditating on emptiness, by mentally holding to the negation of 'nothing whatsoever', will fall into the extreme of nihilism. Therefore, Therefore, what is to be negated is merely the thoroughly imagined. Because it, like a rope mistaken for a snake, is merely grasped by the mind and does not truly exist, it can be negated; and, In the *Pramāṇavārttika* it states (p. 261b): 'If this object is not refuted, Then it is not possible to abandon that [grasping].' As thus taught, if the object is not negated, the subject cannot be negated; this is the nature of phenomena. Therefore, without negating the imagined, the overt clinging of its subject cannot be negated. And without negating that, defilements will not cease, because that is their root. Therefore, Mādhyamikas assert that the object of negation is merely imputation, and it has two aspects: one is that which is established merely conventionally and is to be negated; the other is that which is established ultimately and is to be negated, but not what is conventionally not established. The first type refers to what is thoroughly imagined as 'self' and 'phenomena' by the proponents of one's own and other philosophical systems. As stated above, these are not established even in conventional truth. The second type is the conventionally renowned dependent arising in the world, which is merely these causes and conditions. Regarding this, there are terms directly renowned in the world, such as 'go,' 'stay,' 'eat,' and so forth; and also, although not directly renowned, conventionally acceptable terms such as cause and effect, stages and paths, abandonment and antidote, etc., which are renowned in the scriptures. Regarding that, the manner in which the conventionally renowned terms of the world should not be negated merely conventionally is also as mentioned above in the section on dispelling appearances. As for what is to be established, there are two types: establishing the ultimate meaning, and establishing the conventional. Regarding the establishment of ultimate meaning, there are two types: a non-implicative negation based on the different cognitive intentions of the disputant, asserting the non-existence of an inherent nature of phenomena; and a non-implicative negation asserting the non-existence of the object of negation that is merely an inherent nature. Among these, the non-implicative negation that merely negates the inherent establishment and true existence, etc., of phenomena, is what is to be established here. For example: 'These appearances do not exist by way of an ultimate nature,' or, (2

62n) The non-affirming negation, such as “as one analyzes, so it does not exist,” merely severs the object of negation. Apart from being merely free from elaborations, there is no universally negated object to be established. Therefore, since it does not exist, it cannot be refuted by others. In the *Vigrahavyavartani* (Stopping Disputes), it is stated: “If I had any assertions, Then I would have those faults. Since I have no assertions, I am indeed purely without fault. If by means of direct perception and so forth, Something were to be observed, Then one could establish or refute it, Since it does not exist, I have no ground for dispute.” Regarding that, the meaning of non-existence (negation) refers to “nothing whatsoever,” as it is said in the Sutra: “Whoever knows this Dharma which is nothing whatsoever, That one will become unattached to all Dharmas.” Therefore, it is explained that this is like the power of sound and conceptual thought being exhausted, leading to rest and repose. In brief, the meaning of negation and establishment is: when establishing that “sound is impermanent” through “being produced,” the consciousness that superimposes “sound is permanent” is the actual object of negation, and the consciousness that superimposes “sound is impermanent” is the actual object of establishment. Considering this, Nagarjuna said: “This is to make one understand the absence of inherent existence, not to eliminate arising.” Regarding the establishing proof (reasoning): Generally, in the Madhyamaka (Middle Way) system of logical inference, there are two types of application: applying negation and applying establishment. Firstly, regarding the application of negation, there are four types: 1. Negating by analyzing the cause: the Diamond Particles (Vajra-kana); 2. Negating by analyzing the effect: the negation of arising from existence or non-existence; 3. Negating by analyzing both cause and effect: the negation of four-cornered arising; 4. Negating by analyzing its own nature: freedom from one and many. Among these four: The first is from the *Salistamba Sutra*; The last is taught in the *Lankavatara Sutra*; The middle two also appear in various Sutras (262b). These four (types of reasoning) eliminate the superimposition of inherent existence by realists, thereby abandoning the extreme of existence. These four (types of reasoning) are also, in sequence: 1. Analyzing the cause: If a sprout arises, then (does it arise) from itself, from another, from both, or causelessly? Through such analysis, from the perspective of logic, it does not arise from any of these, thus establishing non-arising. 2. Analyzing the effect: If a sprout arises, then (does it arise) as something that existed at the seed stage, or as something that did not exist? Through such analysis, if it arises as something that existed at the seed stage, then the sprout...
