Sa! Although there are many different classifications based on the ultimate mode of emptiness and, in particular, the conventionally accepted mode, in brief, they are definitively categorized into the two systems of Madyamaka: Sutra and Tantra. II. The second [Extensive Explanation] has two parts: 1. The common Sutra-system Madyamaka; and 2. The profound Secret Mantra (Tantra) Madyamaka. 1. The first (common Sutra-system Madyamaka) also has two parts: 1. A brief explanation by name; and 2. An extensive explanation by characteristics. 1. The first is: Sutra-system inherent existence-less Yogācāra, Principal, secondary, subtle, gross, and other terms are also applied. In Tibet, self-emptiness (Rangtong) and other-emptiness (Shentong) are well-known. Due to slightly different ways or traditions of interpreting the Great Vehicle (Mahayana) Sutras, two classes are defined: the Madyamikas who assert inherent existence-lessness (Niḥsvabhāvavādin Madyamikas) and the Yogācāra Madyamikas. Among these, some apply the terms 'principal' and 'subordinate' to Madyamikas. Acārya Bhavya (Bhāvaviveka) and others also apply terms such as 'subtle inner Madyamaka' to the latter (Yogācāra Madyamaka) and 'gross outer Madyamaka' to the former (inherent existence-less Madyamaka). In Tibet, from the time of the Jonang Dharma Lord, the Great Omniscient One (Dolpopa Sherab Gyaltsen), the traditions of Rangtong (self-emptiness) and Shentong (other-emptiness) Madyamaka became widely renowned. 2. The second, an extensive explanation by characteristics, has two parts: 1. Rangtong (self-emptiness); 2. Shentong (other-emptiness). 1. The first (Rangtong) has two parts: 1. A brief mention of the divisions; 2. A detailed explanation of the presentation. 1. The first is: Formerly, Svātantrika and Prāsaṅgika, two. Regarding the previously mentioned Madyamikas who assert inherent existence-lessness, they are divided into two: the followers of Lekden Jed (Bhāvaviveka), who assert as their own system that all phenomena are unborn and empty in conventional reality, and primarily present an autonomous syllogism (svatantra-anumāna) proven by the force of the three modes (p. 260b) as their main proof, hence they are called 'Svātantrika' (Autonomous School); and the followers of Drakpa (Candrakīrti), who assert that unbornness and emptiness are solely expressed by refuting others' wrong conceptions, and because they do not possess an autonomous syllogism established by the force of the three modes, they primarily present mere consequences (prasanga) that demonstrate internal contradiction to realists, hence they are known as 'Prāsaṅgika' (Consequentialist School). These two exist. 2. The second, a detailed explanation of the presentation, has three parts: 1. Prāsaṅgika, Svātantrika.

Common System. Section 2: Distinctions between the two. Section 3: Their respective systems. \t\t\tSection 1: The first has two. Sub-section 1: The two selflessnesses. Sub-section 2: The method of reasoning. \t\t\tSub-section 1: The first is: \t\t\tThe source of common views, the self of persons, and \t\t\tThe root of obscurations, the two selves of phenomena, are refuted by reasoning. \t\t\tThe two Madhyamaka schools, Prasangika and Svatantrika, commonly (agree on): The self of persons, which is the root of all views and afflictions, the grasping at a self of persons; and the self of phenomena, which is the root of the two obscurations, the grasping at all outer and inner phenomena as truly existent by their own characteristics. These two selves are refuted by many scriptural citations and lines of reasoning, and the mind is placed evenly upon the two selflessnesses. The method for these will be explained in somewhat more detail during the stages of contemplation and meditation. \t\t\tSub-section 2: The method of reasoning is: \t\t\tUpon the subject basis, the object of negation is superimposed; and \t\t\tRegarding the object to be established, there are two: ultimate and conventional. \t\t\tThe nature of both reasoning (cause and effect); \t\t\tThe four analyses eliminate the extreme of existence held by the realists. \t\t\tAnalyzing mere appearance with the reasoning of dependent origination; \t\t\tThe ultimate, free from the two extremes, has no contradiction. \t\t\tFirstly, "subject basis" (chos can) refers to the point of contention (topic). This, moreover, is established by the valid cognitions of both the proponent and opponent (page 261, recto). Whether it be something gross like "object" (dngos po) or subtle like "sprout" (myu gu), in this system, these are all things that will lead to grasping at their opponent factor as truly existent, which is to be refuted. \t\t\tThe object of negation is: When analyzed upon that subject basis, the object of negation is definitely of two types: that which appears and that which is imputed. For now, it is not reasonable to negate mere appearance. For example, just as those whose eyes are afflicted by cataracts will not cease to perceive appearances like falling hairs and two moons as long as they are not free from the eye defect. So too, as long as the non-afflicted ignorance is not abandoned, the magical illusion-like appearances of the six consciousnesses will not cease, and therefore, they cannot be negated by reasoning. \t\t\tNor is it necessary to negate it, because faults do not arise from mere appearance but from grasping onto it. For example, just as a magician does not grasp onto the young woman he himself created, so too, even if there are appearances, if there is no grasping, one is not bound. Just as children develop attachment to the illusory young woman, afflictions increase from explicitly grasping onto appearances...
