Truth and falsehood, etc., followed. Dignaga and his disciples (Dharmakirti) held the view of both conventional and ultimate truth. (257b) \t\t\tFurthermore, the Noble Nagarjuna also held the view of both, and so on. \t\t\tAlthough Asanga was a Madhyamaka master, his composition of Cittamatra treatises was not contradictory, similar to Vasubandhu's Abhidharmakośa, and so on, with various individual assertions being made. \t\t\tThe great omniscient master of Jonang (Dolpopa Sherab Gyaltsen) stated: “Although the Third Turning of the Wheel of Dharma and Maitreya's intermediate teachings (The Five Treatises of Maitreya) do not teach the Madhyamaka asserted by Tibetans, they do teach the Madhyamaka held by the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas. The intention of the Noble Ones' treatises on logic (Pramana-samuccaya, Pramana-varttika, etc.), which Tibetans assert, is merely a partial aspect and not the ultimate.” \t\t\tThe venerable great master of Jonang (Dolpopa) and his followers also proclaimed Asanga and his brother (Vasubandhu) to be Madhyamaka masters, and their philosophical system to be Great Madhyamaka (Zhentong). If so, who then are the founding masters of Cittamatra? (They assert that) it is the tradition of some followers among the five hundred Mahayana masters, such as the great monk Abhitarka, and later, some proponents of mere cognition (Vijnaptimatravada). Thus they assert. \t\t\tPart 2: [How it is refuted]: \t\t\tThe faults of the realists were refuted by the treatises of the Noble Ones (Nagarjuna, Aryadeva, and their followers). \t\t\tThe “false-aspectarian” (Namarzünpa) and those who assert that appearances are pervaded by delusion, establishing delusion and all activities, are known as “realists” because they do not understand that the basis (of phenomena) lacks true existence. Although each lower philosophical tenet refuted a specific object of refutation posited upon a basis of true existence, ultimately, all the cognitive errors within the philosophical tenets of the realists were thoroughly refuted by the Noble Ones' treatises on logic (Pramana-samuccaya, Pramana-varttika, etc.) and their followers. This clearly elucidated the distinctive quality of the Madhyamaka school, which is to understand the establishment of activities upon a baseless delusion (258a). \t\t\tTherefore, in 'A Brief Exposition of Views,' it states: \t\t\tThe Vaibhashikas and Sautrantikas, \t\t\tAnd in the treatises of the Yogacarins, \t\t\tAlthough some are slightly true and some untrue, \t\t\tAll are true in the Madhyamaka system. \t\t\tThus it was spoken. \t\t\tFurthermore, the distinction between Cittamatra and Madhyamaka, and the basis, path, and fruition (entrance/gate) …

Although some speak of various great distinctions, the main distinction between the two Mahayana schools lies in whether they assert or do not assert that self-aware, self-luminous consciousness, empty of subject and object, ultimately exists. As stated in texts such as the 'Compendium of Wisdom Essence' (Yeshe Nyingpo Kuntus): “Consciousness, free from apprehended and apprehending, ultimately exists.” This is said when explaining the tenets of the Cittamātra (Mind-Only) school. And, as stated: “That consciousness, even ultimately, the wise do not assert to exist.” This is said when explaining the tenets of the Madhyamaka school. Second, there are seven points for presenting Madhyamaka: 1. Definitive meaning of the term; 2. Gateway to engagement; 3. Vows to be protected; 4. View to be realized; 5. Result to be attained; 6. Detailed classification; 7. Summary of Ground, Path, and Result. First, for the first point: Madhyamaka, liberated from extremes, is the supreme philosophical tenet. Because it is completely liberated from all extremes such as existence, non-existence, arising, cessation, etc., and asserts no referent, it is called a Madhyamika. From the Ratnakuta Sutra (DKon brtsegs): “One does not conceive of all phenomena as permanent. One does not conceive of them as impermanent. What is called 'permanent' is one extreme. What is called 'impermanent' is the second extreme. That which is the middle of the two extremes is unexaminable, inexpressible, unsupported (258b), non-appearing, non-cognizable, non-abiding. O Kasyapa, this is the Middle Way, the perfect discernment of all phenomena.” And from the Minor Madhyamaka Ornament (Dbu ma rgyan chung): “It is not existent, nor is it non-existent. Not both, nor not neither. That which is free from these four extremes, is perfectly called a Madhyamika.” Second, for the gateway to engagement: The gateway to engagement is the two truths. For those who, without examination, perceive appearances but understand they are not truly established, this leads to the conventional truth of adopting and discarding virtuous conduct; and for those who, without any adoption, rejection, refutation, or establishment of anything, understand that merely appearing phenomena are empty, this leads to the ultimate truth, conjoining the two accumulations. The gateway for Madhyamikas to engage is primarily based on their nature, subsuming all phenomena under the two truths and explaining them. Among these, these unexamined and unanalyzed appearances, however they appear, their essence is not truly...
