Holding to the mind as truly existing. Within the Yogācāra school, the main tenets are primarily divided into two views: true aspectarian and false aspectarian. (Page 255b) Firstly, the true aspectarian school holds that although external objects do not truly exist, in reality, due to the imprints of discriminating thoughts, consciousness itself arises as having the aspect of objects, just like a colored crystal. Therefore, all that appears as form is merely the appearing mind, influenced by mistaken imprints, appearing as distant objects. In reality, the apprehended mind truly exists. Therefore, cessation truth (Nirodha-satya) is also posited on the mind free from objects to be abandoned. Similarly, all aggregates (skandhas), elements (dhātus), and sense bases (āyatanas) mentioned in the sūtras are truly mental phenomena, are mind-nature. Because they assert everything to be mind-nature, they are known as the True Aspectarians. Secondly, there are three divisions of this school: 1. Like a broken eggshell (meaning apprehended and apprehending are half-separated). 2. Apprehended and apprehending are equal in number. 3. Various aspects are non-dual. Firstly, the first (like a broken eggshell) is: The aspects of consciousness are each truly existing in their own part. This means that the two aspects of consciousness – the apprehended object and the apprehending consciousness – are separated like a broken egg. Furthermore, they assert that the aspect truly exists in the apprehended part, and consciousness truly exists in the apprehending part. Master Jetāri says: “Furthermore, some assert that the inner appearing consciousness is also other, and the outer appearing phenomenon is also other, because both are merely self-cognition. Due to the power of these two elaborations, the two natures of apprehended and apprehending are imputed.” Secondly, the second (apprehended and apprehending are equal in number) is: As many apprehended aspects as there are, so many apprehending consciousnesses there are, being equal. This means: Just as there are various distinct substances like white, red, etc., there are an equal number of apprehending consciousnesses corresponding to the apprehended aspects of distinct substances. Although they appear as various white, red, etc., and truly exist as individual substances, the appearing sense consciousness (e.g., eye consciousness) also asserts that they truly exist as multiple distinct substances. (Page 256a) In the *Madhyamakāvatāra-bhāṣya* (Self-Commentary on the Introduction to the Middle Way), it says: “Just like feelings of happiness and so forth, the aspects of blue and so forth are also solely the nature of experience. These consciousnesses are numerous, and they are all of the same kind. They arise simultaneously, just like various dissimilar consciousnesses arise simultaneously.”
