3. Third [Manifold Non-Duality]: Though various appearances arise, their essence is declared non-dual. Since consciousness alone appears as white, red, and so forth, though manifold appearances arise, all are truly non-dual in the essence of partless consciousness, and thus it is asserted to be non-dual. As it appears in the *Madhyamaka Svavrtti* (Root Verses of the Middle Way with Auto-Commentary): “Some assert that consciousness alone, like a wish-fulfilling jewel, takes on manifold forms.” 2. Second, regarding the Apparentists (Rnam Rdzun Pa), there are also two: 1) General explanation of their tenets. 2) Specific differentiation. 1. First [General explanation of their tenets]: False appearances are like blurry vision, Non-existent yet clearly appearing, untrue, and false. They assert that consciousness alone, empty of duality, is true. The Mind-Only Apparentists (Rnam Rdzun Pa) hold that all appearances, such as white and black, are like seeing two moons when squeezing the eyes, or like falling hairs appearing to someone with blurry vision—non-existent yet clearly appearing, unreal and false in essence, like dreams or illusions. Because if they were truly consciousness, then one would perceive objects like forms, but one does not perceive them. Therefore, they assert that consciousness alone, which is empty of the duality of grasped and grasper, self-aware, self-illuminating, like a pure crystal ball, fundamentally unturned and undefiled by the stains of appearances, is true. In short, consciousness is undefiled by the stains of appearances, like a pure crystal ball (256b). Appearances, on the other hand, are held to be false, appearing though non-existent, like falling hairs. Hence, they are also known as “Aspectless” (Rnam Med Pa) or “Apparentists” (Rnam Rdzun Pa). 2. Second [Specific differentiation]: Whether appearances stain the mind or not, And whether dual appearances exist at the Buddha-ground. Based on these tenets, they are differentiated into 'stained' and 'unstained'. These consciousnesses, though in reality abiding as grasping aspects of pleasure, suffering, etc., due to the power of ignorance, appear as external apprehended aspects. They assert that the very nature of consciousness is stained by these false appearances, hence they are called the 'Stained Apparentists' (Rnam Rdzun Dri Bcas Pa). However, others assert that ultimately, there is no defilement by external appearances, and the nature of these consciousnesses is like a pure crystal ball. But ordinary beings cannot realize this; only Buddhas know it. Therefore, they are called the 'Unstained Apparentists' (Rnam Rdzun Dri Med Pa). Furthermore, these appearances of white and red exist at the Buddha-ground, but are not mistaken...

becomes. Because one realizes the false as false. \t\t\tTherefore, (some schools) assert that in the Buddha-bhumi (Buddha-stage) there is dualistic appearance, claiming that object and consciousness cannot be described as identical or different. If this appearance of white and red were truly the nature of consciousness, then Buddhas would also perceive this appearance, but they do not, therefore it is not real. \t\t\tTherefore, (some schools) assert that consciousness appears without being related to an object, and there is no dualistic appearance in the Buddha-bhumi, and based on this, it is explained that defiled and undefiled (consciousness) are distinguished into two. \t\t\tIn short, the Cittamatra (Mind-Only) sect, specifically the Aparinishpanna-satya-vadin (Truly Apparent Aspect School), asserts that all external objects appearing to the five sense consciousnesses are truly existent as the substance of internal consciousness. Whereas the Aparinishpanna-mrisha-vadin (Falsely Apparent Aspect School) asserts that all objects appearing to the five sense consciousnesses are not truly existent as the substance of the inner mind, but are false or nominally existent. This should be understood as explained by many scholars like Lakshmi (257n). \t\t\tBoth of these Cittamatra (Mind-Only) schools assert that consciousness, free from the duality of grasped and grasper, indivisible, moment-by-moment, is the ultimate truth. Therefore, they should be called "Vijnanavadin" (Consciousness-only proponents) or "Cittamatrin" (Mind-only proponents). If only those who assert "the appearance of objects as mind" are considered as such, it would be overly broad for the Sautrantika school and would fail to include the Aparinishpanna-mrisha-vadin, which is a fault. Thus said Karma Trinley. \t\t\tBoth also assert that the self-aware, self-luminous consciousness, free from the duality of grasped and grasper, which is the ultimate truth, is obscured by the veils of dualistic appearance. Therefore, even when attaining the Noble Dharma, it is merely considered as being free from dualistic appearance. \t\t\tThe Tibetan scholar (Karma Trinley) here cites the words of Master Vasubandhu. This means that Vasubandhu affirmed the true existence of wisdom (jnana), and here, asserting the true existence of consciousness (vijnana) and making a distinction between the two is merely a fault of distorted speech. \t\t\tSecond, as a supplementary explanation, there are two points: 1. The masters (Acharyas) who hold these tenets. 2. The method of refuting them. \t\t\t1. The first point is: \t\t\tThe tradition of the five hundred ancient masters and so on. \t\t\tTibetans unanimously state that all other Maitreya Dharma teachings, apart from the *Abhisamayalankara* (Ornament of Clear Realization), expound Cittamatra (Mind-Only). \t\t\tSome assert that the *Uttaratantra* (Sublime Continuum) contains the meaning of Madhyamaka (Middle Way). They also assert that the final turning of the Dharma wheel expounded only Cittamatra and did not expound Madhyamaka. \t\t\tThe brothers Asanga (Thogmed) who founded the charioteer tradition, and all of their treatises, are Cittamatra, and the aspect...
