The timeless expanse, Is the abode of all phenomena. Because of its existence, all beings, Will attain nirvana. As it is said, based on the imprints of all afflictive phenomena, endowed with the complete retention of seeds, it becomes the cause for the arising of all afflictive phenomena. Being all-pervasive, it is also undefiled, and not established as either virtuous or non-virtuous, hence it is also indeterminate. Third, when does it reverse? It continues as long as one dwells in samsara, and reverses when arhatship is attained. It is like a continuously flowing river, When arhatship is attained, it reverses. Thus it is explained. Furthermore, upon becoming a Buddha, it reverses through the mode of transformation of basis, as it is said: What is the alaya-vijñāna, That becomes the Mirror-like Wisdom. Thus it is taught. (252b) Fourth, the special distinction from a creator like Ishvara and so forth: Ishvara and the like are believed to be the sole creator of everything, and they posit an eternal self (ātman) and so forth. However, the alaya-vijñāna exists for each individual sentient being, and it is taught to be of the nature of dependent arising, momentary, and discerning its own essence. Therefore, it is superior (or distinct). Second, its characteristics (natures) have three parts: 1. The designated basis is the Dependent Nature, 2. The designated object is the Imagined Nature, 3. The pervasive operator is the Perfected Nature. First: From the three natures, the dependent arises, Unreal conceptualization born from imprints' sway. Instant it stays not, prior masters later way. From the division into three natures: First, the Dependent Nature, which arises from the alaya-vijñāna itself, refers to the forms of the apprehended object (grāhya-bhāga) appearing as the phenomena of aggregates, elements, and sense sources, and the forms of the apprehending subject (grāhaka-bhāga) appearing as unreal conceptualization. Because it arises from the power of previous similar types of its own imprints (seeds), it is the cause; because its own essence does not endure for a second moment after being established, it is the nature; because it produces subsequent similar types, and the subsequent ones are also subjugated by the previous ones, it is the result. Therefore, all three (cause, nature/essence, result) are the Dependent Nature. In short, the Dependent Nature is the designated basis of the Imagined Nature and a part of the alaya-vijñāna, it is unreal conceptualization.

The mere consciousness, characterized by the three realms, its nature is substantially established, and in the deluded appearance, it arises from causes and conditions. Part 2: [Explanation of the thoroughly imputed]. The basis of imputation is substantially existent, but upon it, there is perversion. Self and mine, etc., are all thoroughly imputed. The thoroughly imputed, as just explained, is that upon the substantially existent dependent nature, which is the basis of imputation, that apprehending mental consciousness wrongly superimposes person and (253a) phenomena, thus thoroughly imputing self, mine, names, reasons, and so forth. Ultimately, while not substantially existent in any way, it appears like falling hairs, being merely an apprehended object of the deluded mind. If one apprehends this, it becomes an opposing factor to liberation, and having no imputed aspect whatsoever, it is like a rabbit's horn. Part 3: [Explanation of the thoroughly established, which is the pervasive definer]. The uncompounded (nature) that is empty of the negated imputed existent. The consciousness empty of duality, non-conceptual, ultimately existent. The thoroughly established is the uncompounded that is empty of the thoroughly imputed, which is the object of negation of the imputed existent; it is the non-conceptual consciousness empty of the duality of apprehended object and apprehending subject, thoroughly established as not other than that pure object of apprehension. Furthermore, the thoroughly imputed is merely nominally existent, because it is not substantially established. The dependent nature is substantially existent, because it is functionally effective. The thoroughly established is ultimately existent, because it is the object of non-conceptual wisdom. Therefore, in the sutras, those teachings that present various aspects of non-existence refer to the thoroughly imputed. Those that teach about illusion, dream, mirage, and so forth, refer to the dependent nature. Those that teach about non-conceptual (wisdom) and the uncompounded refer to the thoroughly established. Although the masters have taught various classifications and summaries regarding these, what is largely well-known in Tibet is: Regarding the thoroughly imputed: the thoroughly imputed that lacks characteristics is that which, though not established in reality, is imputed by thought, such as the view of self and substantial establishment. The nominal thoroughly imputed is: conceptual universals appearing to thought, and like the dual appearance of apprehended object and apprehending subject to non-conceptual sensory consciousness. Regarding the dependent nature: the impure dependent nature is: due to the power of latent imprints, the minds and (253b) mental factors of the three realms appearing as duality from non-duality. The pure
