Homage! The definite six perfections are, in summary, all the practices of a Bodhisattva (251a), arising from the definite inclusion within the three trainings. \t\t\tFrom the 'Ornament' it is said: \t\t\tHaving taken hold of the three trainings, \t\t\tThe Buddha perfectly taught the six perfections. \t\t\tThe first three, \t\t\tThe last two have two aspects (each). \t\t\tOne is also included in all three. \t\t\tThus it was stated. \t\t\tAlternatively, it is made with reference to higher rebirth and definite good. Among these, the three for the purpose of higher rebirth are: generosity for the purpose of enjoyments, morality for the purpose of the body, and patience for the purpose of retinue. \t\t\tThe three for the purpose of definite good are: meditative stabilization for the purpose of tranquility (shamatha), wisdom for the purpose of insight (vipashyana), and diligence for the purpose of increasing good qualities. \t\t\tThe eleventh, the order, is: From that very (text) it is said: \t\t\tRelying on the former, the latter arises, \t\t\tBecause of abiding in lower and higher, \t\t\tAnd because of being coarse and subtle, \t\t\tThey are taught in that order. \t\t\tAs described above, due to three reasons, generosity and so forth are taught in that order. \t\t\tPart three: The third, the explanation of the main practice of shamatha and vipashyana, is: \t\t\tThe main practice is single-pointed mind of shamatha, \t\t\tAnd insight that thoroughly distinguishes phenomena, meditated in sequence. \t\t\tRegarding the main practice of the path, from the 'Sutra-Ornament' it is said: \t\t\tBy relying on the correct object of focus, \t\t\tBecause the mind is placed on the mind, \t\t\tAnd because phenomena are thoroughly distinguished, \t\t\tThere is shamatha and vipashyana. \t\t\tAs stated thus, one first meditates in sequence the meditative concentration of shamatha, which is single-pointed mind, and vipashyana, which is the wisdom of discerning each phenomenon thoroughly. Ultimately, by meditating on the samadhi of the union of shamatha and vipashyana, which naturally enter simultaneously, one will attain a non-abiding nirvana, freed from the bondage of cyclic existence and peace. \t\t\tFrom the 'Gong 'grel' (251b) it is said: \t\t\tIf the practitioner cultivates \t\t\tVipashyana and Shamatha, \t\t\tThey will be freed from the bondage of afflictions, \t\t\tAnd the bondage of characteristics. \t\t\tThus it was stated. \t\t\tThe detailed presentation of these will appear in the sections on meditation stages. \t\t\tPart two: The second, the specific explanation of the divisions of tenets, has two parts. Part one: A brief presentation of names. Part two: An extensive explanation of their definitions. \t\t\tPart one: The first is:

The philosophical schools of Cittamatra (Mind-Only) and Madhyamaka (Middle Way) are established in two. In that vehicle of ultimate truth, there are two philosophical schools established: the Cittamatra (Mind-Only) school, which asserts the truly existing consciousness, and the Madhyamaka (Middle Way) school, which asserts the non-existence of inherent nature. II. The second (part) has two divisions: 1. The Cittamatra school, and 2. The explanation of the Madhyamaka tradition. I. The first (of these) has three divisions: 1. Etymology and definition, 2. Summary into seven bases, 3. Explanation of its classification. 1. The first (of these) is: The Cittamatra, who asserts the true establishment of consciousness, states that there is nothing existent apart from the mind, and that the mere appearance of mind is established as truly existent. Therefore, it is called Cittamatra (Mind-Only) or Vijnaptimatrata (Mere Consciousness). From the Prajnaparamita in Eight Thousand Verses: "O Sons of the Victorious Ones! These three realms are merely mind." According to the meaning of this scripture, by practicing proper mental engagement in accordance with the actual nature of phenomena, it is also known as Yogacara (Yoga Practice). II. The second (part) [summary into seven bases] has two divisions: 1. Brief presentation, 2. Extensive explanation. 1. The first (of these) is: All paths of the Great Vehicle are gathered into the seven bases. The Cittamatra school gathers all paths of the Great Vehicle into seven fundamental points: The knowable object and its characteristics, entry into that, And its causes and effects, and its classification, The three trainings and the abandonment of their results, The supreme and excellent wisdom vehicle. As taught in the Abhidharma Sutra, for example. 2. The second (part) is the extensive explanation (252 verso), which has seven divisions: 1. The knowable object, 2. Its characteristics, 3. Entry into its meaning, 4. Its causes and effects, 5. Its classification, 6. The three trainings, 7. The fruit of purification. 1. The first (of these) is: The knowable object is the alaya-vijnana (storehouse consciousness). Here, the knowable object refers to the alaya-vijnana (storehouse consciousness), taught in order to become skilled in the causal interdependent origination of all phenomena. There are four (points) for establishing this. First, the reason for the existence of the alaya-vijnana is: From the Samdhinirmocana Sutra: The grasping consciousness is profound and subtle, All seeds flow like a river. If it were mistakenly perceived as a self, it would be inappropriate, This I have not taught to the ignorant. II. The second (point) is its characteristics: In the Abhidharma Sutra, the beginning...
