Understanding all things as empty and like an illusion, possessing six by six, thus making one hundred and eight. Alternatively, from the Abhisamayālaṅkāra: To generosity and the other six types, By their distinct accumulations, Whatever is the practice of armor, Is truly expounded by six sets of six. Likewise, each of the six, such as generosity within generosity, ethical conduct within generosity, and so forth, also possessing six by six, can also be divided into thirty-six. Regarding accumulation, from the Abhisamayālaṅkāra: Generosity and ethical conduct Are the accumulation of merit; wisdom Is that of primordial wisdom; The other three are both; All five are also accumulations of primordial wisdom. As stated, if embraced by the two accumulations or by wisdom, all five also become accumulations of primordial wisdom. Alternatively, the first five are means (skillful means), and the sixth is wisdom, thus they can also be categorized as means and wisdom. Fifth: Generosity becomes perfect by not seeking reciprocation and karmic ripening, and so forth. From the Abhisamayālaṅkāra: Generosity without expectation, Ethical conduct not desiring future existence, Patience towards all, Diligence from which all good qualities arise, Similarly, meditation not being formless, Wisdom endowed with skillful means: To these six perfections, The steadfast ones perfectly apply themselves. Thus it is said. (Page 250, right side) Sixth, the principal aspect: It should be known that among generosities, the giving of the sacred Dharma is principal, and so forth. From the same text: The giving of Dharma and pure ethical conduct, The attainment of non-arising patience, The undertaking of Mahayana diligence, Dwelling with compassion for all beings, By those endowed with wisdom, The perfections are considered principal. Thus it is stated. And these (generosity, etc.), in terms of their scope, need to be practiced in a way that possesses the six excellences. Namely, the excellent basis is endowed with Bodhicitta; the excellent object (or excellent substance) is not limited to one aspect like generosity, but is unrestricted; the excellent purpose is to be applied for the benefit of others; the excellent skillful means are embraced by the wisdom of non-conceptualization of the three spheres; the excellent dedication is sealed with a non-toxic dedication for unsurpassed Bodhi; the excellent purity, of the two obscurations...

These are to be practiced as actual antidotes. Seventh, concerning distinctions, there are also two: the distinction between unfavorable conditions and antidotes. Attachment to enjoyments is an unfavorable condition for generosity, a cause of decline; non-attachment is an antidote, a special condition, and so forth. Attachment to enjoyments and decline, Arrogance and diminution of merit, Indulgence in tastes and discursive thoughts, Are the causes of decline for the steadfast ones. Bodhisattvas, abiding in their antidotes, In order to reverse those, Should know these special conditions as Dharma. As it is said. (250b) [Second] The distinction between artificiality and authenticity is also: Miracles and hypocrisy, Displaying beauty of face, And likewise engaging in subtle acts, Tranquility of body and speech, And likewise being skilled in speech, perfectly endowed, If these are without actual practice, It is said to be inauthentic for a pure Bodhisattva. Conversely, those who earnestly apply themselves, It is said that these are authentic. As it is said. Eighth, the method of training is: by understanding the benefits of each and the faults of their adversaries, each of the perfections should be practiced with the full complement of the six perfections. For example, generosity is giving away one's body, possessions, and roots of virtue; at that time, moral discipline is restraining the mental activities of Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas; and patience is aspiring to the qualities of omniscience; and diligence is generating aspiration for its development; and meditative concentration is a single-pointed mind unmixed with the Hinayana; and wisdom is knowing the object given, the giver, and the act of giving as being like an illusion—thus completing the set of six. Ninth, regarding the results, temporarily, as stated in The Precious Garland: Generosity brings enjoyments, discipline brings peace, Patience brings good form, diligence brings majesty, Meditation brings tranquility, wisdom brings liberation. As it is said. Ultimately, the collection of merit is the direct cause of the Buddha's Form Body, and the collection of wisdom is the direct cause of the Dharma Body. Diligence becomes the helper for both, leading to the attainment of the two Bodies. Tenth, regarding the definite number
