"Through the cause of its very nature." This means that if one enters this vehicle, one possesses the power to proceed to Buddhahood; one's wisdom is vast and one's sphere of activity is extensive; one attains all the joys of higher realms and the bliss of definite goodness, hence it is called the Mahayana (Great Vehicle). From the *Compendium*: "Why is this called the Great Vehicle of Bodhi?" (248b) Because by riding upon it, all sentient beings are freed from suffering. This vehicle is like space, an immeasurable great mansion; it is the supreme vehicle that overtly bestows joy, happiness, and bliss. Thus it is said. Furthermore, because it directly connects to the ultimate fruit, the state of unified Vajradhara, and demonstrates the path and stages, it is called "Characteristic." And because, relative to the ultimate fruit, the non-abiding nirvana's unified wisdom, it functions as approximately half of its cause, it is called the "Causal Vehicle," and so forth. Thus it is spoken. The instrumental case particle (byed sgra) signifies the meaning that leads to the subsequent word. 2. The actual exposition is twofold: 1. A general presentation of the practices to be learned. 2. A detailed explanation of the classifications of philosophical tenets. 1. The first is threefold: 1. The practitioner (person who studies). 2. The practices to be applied: the Six Perfections. 3. The explanation of the actual meditation: quiescence (shamatha) and insight (vipashyana). 1. The first: The individual who traverses (the path) is of great resolve and possesses the three graded faculties. This means, in general, the individual who traverses by the path of the Great Vehicle is one whose Mahayana lineage has awakened, who has generated the two bodhicittas (aspirational and engaging), and who possesses great wisdom capable of engaging in the vast conduct of a Bodhisattva. Regarding faculties, there are three grades: dull, sharp, and extremely sharp. The dull-faculty individual, although having faith in the Perfection of Wisdom and possessing patience, when engaging in the first five perfections (like generosity), is unable to practice them while being held by the Perfection of Wisdom. This is also called a beginner Bodhisattva. The sharp-faculty individual practices generosity and so forth while being held by the Perfection of Wisdom. The extremely sharp-faculty individual is capable of practicing generosity and so forth, directly engaging with the special Perfection of Wisdom through a self-aware direct perception (249a). 2. Dā(द)来自Dāridra(दारिद्र्य)一词,意为贫穷等。Na(न)是否定词,意为消除。因此,通过消除和舍弃贫穷,它适用于布施。此应遍知。 第四,就分类和摄义而言: 分类是: 如在《菩萨戒》中提及,在十八根本分类中,每一者亦有: 为有情之义而行, 为不损害有情而行, 为忍受难行之苦而行, 为不被其他行间断而行, 为不散乱心而行,

[Explanation of the Six Perfections] is: Having generated Bodhicitta, One should practice the six transcendent perfections. Also, their nature, characteristics, etymology, Classification and subsumption, reality, main and distinctive features, the way of learning, And the provisional and definitive results should be known in order. The common ground for all three levels of faculties to learn is to generate Bodhicitta for enlightenment and practice the conduct of enlightenment. Among these, one should primarily practice the six transcendent perfections. Although some of their meanings have already been mentioned in the context of the Bodhisattva vows, Here, if we briefly mention again: Firstly, the nature is: From the "Precious Garland": Generosity is the complete giving of one's own possessions. Moral discipline is benefiting others. Patience is abandoning anger. Effort is the complete holding of virtue. Concentration is one-pointed without defilements. Wisdom establishes the meaning of truth. Thus it is said. Secondly, the characteristics are: Weakening their respective opposing factors like stinginess, Possessing the wisdom of non-conceptualization regarding the three spheres, Completing the benefit of others through conduct, Each also ripening the mind-streams of sentient beings, thus possessing four characteristics. From the "Ornament": Generosity weakens opposing factors, Possesses non-conceptual wisdom, Completely fulfills all wishes, Ripens sentient beings in three ways. As stated and so on. Thirdly, the etymology is: From that same text: For abandoning poverty, For attaining coolness, for enduring anger, For applying the supreme, for holding the mind, And for knowing the ultimate truth, it is thus explained. As it appears: "Abandoning poverty" is established as the etymology of generosity (249b). The Sanskrit equivalent for generosity is Dāna (दान). Dā (द) from the word Dāridra (दारिद्र्य) refers to poverty, etc. Na (न) is a negative particle meaning "to eliminate". Thus, by eliminating and abandoning poverty, it applies to generosity. This should be understood for all. Fourthly, regarding classification and summation: The classification is: As mentioned during the Bodhisattva vows, for each of the eighteen root classifications, acting for the benefit of sentient beings, Not harming sentient beings, Enduring difficult sufferings, Not being interrupted by other activities, Not distracting the mind,
