Generally, because the explanations of the path are largely similar, and since the Sravaka and Pratyekabuddha pitakas are not separately mentioned in the scriptures of both the greater and lesser vehicles, most Chinese and Tibetan treatises often combine the tenets of the Sravakas and Pratyekabuddhas into one category. However, just as the *Sutra Dispelling the Regrets of Ajatashatru* and the *Kalachakra Tantra* state that the Pratyekabuddha vehicle has its own separate pitaka, some treatises also distinguish between the tenets of these two. Here, although the tenets of the Sravakas and Pratyekabuddhas are largely similar, there are also many significant differences. Moreover, in the general language of the scriptures, the 'Three Vehicles' are commonly spoken of, and thus, the tenets of the Sravakas and Pratyekabuddhas are presented separately here. \t\t\tII. The exposition of the Mahayana has two parts: 1. Stating the differences between the Great and Lesser Vehicles; 2. The actual exposition of the Mahayana. \t\t\t1. First is: \t\t\tRealizing the two selflessnesses, contemplating and practicing perfections. \t\t\tCompletely abandoning the two obscurations, not dwelling in the extremes of cyclic existence or nirvana. \t\t\tPossessing the seven greatnesses. \t\t\tThis states: When explaining the Mahayana, one might first wonder what are the differences between the Great and Lesser Vehicles? Akshobhya and his spiritual sons (referring to a lineage of teachers) hold this view: \t\t\tThe difference in realizing the view, the difference in the training of thought and action, the difference in abandoning what should be abandoned, the difference in the fruit to be attained, and the difference of the seven greatnesses. \t\t\tFirst, Mahayana is the clear and complete realization of phenomena-selflessness (dharma-anatman) in addition to the realization of personal-selflessness (pudgala-anatman); not realizing it is Hinayana. \t\t\tAs stated in *Praise to Madhyamaka*: \t\t\tWithout realizing the signless, \t\t\tYou taught there is no liberation. \t\t\tTherefore, within the Mahayana, \t\t\tThis is fully expounded. \t\t\tIt is thus. \t\t\tSecond, the difference lies in engaging in the practice of the six perfections (paramitas) motivated by loving-kindness, compassion, and bodhicitta, or not engaging in them. \t\t\tAs said by the Master Ashvaghosha: \t\t\tFor those like rhinoceroses (Pratyekabuddhas), \t\t\tEven the name of the six perfections does not exist. \t\t\tThe Bhagavan alone (perfected) the perfections, \t\t\tDwelling in the generality of the six. \t\t\tIt is thus. \t\t\tThird, the Hinayana can abandon all afflictive obscurations (klesha-avarana) but cannot abandon all cognitive obscurations (jñeya-avarana); the Mahayana, however, can abandon both obscurations completely, including their latent predispositions (vasanas). \t\t\tFourth is:

Those who, due to deficient skillful means and wisdom, desire merely peaceful nirvana are the Hinayana. From the *Abhisamayalankara*: By wisdom, one does not abide in cyclic existence, By compassion, one does not abide in quiescence. As it is said, those who, with profound wisdom and vast skillful means, do not abide in the extremes of cyclic existence and quiescence, and aspire to or achieve such nirvana, are the Great Vehicle. Fifthly, from the *Mahayanasutralankara*: The greatness of the object (of focus), Similarly, the two kinds of accomplishment, The undertaking of wisdom and diligence, Becoming skilled in skillful means, The great perfect accomplishment, The great enlightened activity of the Buddha. Because it possesses these great qualities, It is definitively called Mahayana. Thus it is said. These, too, are respectively: focusing on the vast Mahayana canon; accomplishing the welfare of both oneself and others; realizing both types of selflessness; undertaking diligent and respectful effort over three countless eons; not completely abandoning cyclic existence, and being without any afflictions, thus like being permitted the seven non-virtues of body and speech; perfectly accomplishing the powers, fearlessness, and unmixed qualities of a Buddha; and are spontaneously accomplished and uninterrupted enlightened activities. Possessing these seven is Mahayana, not possessing them is Hinayana. Furthermore, from the *Sampuṭa* (or *The Compendium of the Sutras*): Great generosity, great mind, and great power, Engaging in the supreme Mahayana of the Victors, Donning the great armor and subduing Mara's delusions, Therefore, such a great hero is supremely proclaimed. And so forth. From the *Madhyanta-Vibhaga*: The object of knowledge and its characteristics, engaging in them, Its cause and effect, and its excellent differentiation, The three trainings and the abandoning of their results, The supreme vehicle of wisdom is especially excellent. As thus indicated, countless (descriptions) emerge from these sacred scriptures and their commentaries. Second, the actual presentation of the Great Vehicle has two aspects: 1. The Causal Perfection Vehicle; and 2. The Resultant Secret Mantra Vajrayana. The first has two: Nya1. Brief presentation of characteristics; Nya2. Extensive explanation of the presentation. Nya1. The first is: The great Buddha Vehicle. Characteristics...
