As stated previously. \t\t\tཉ༣ Second, regarding the Pratyekabuddha Vehicle, there are two (parts): ཏ༡ the distinctions of Śrāvaka and Pratyekabuddha (244b), and ཏ༢ the explanation of the Pratyekabuddha. \t\t\tཏ༡ The first is: \t\t\tThe swift Pratyekabuddha is liberated in three existences, \t\t\tThe rhinoceros-like (Pratyekabuddha) arises profoundly in minor and major for a hundred eons. \t\t\tAlthough both Śrāvaka and Pratyekabuddha are similar in being of the Hīnayāna, there are great distinctions in terms of cause and effect. \t\t\tThe cause, as stated in the Abhidharmakośa: \t\t\tThe swift one is liberated in three existences, \t\t\tThe rhinoceros-like cultivates for a hundred eons. \t\t\tJust like that. \t\t\tRegarding the distinctions of lineage in terms of fruit: Those of the Pratyekabuddha lineage, due to their greater pride, in worlds devoid of Buddhas and Śrāvakas, desire to actualize enlightenment by themselves, without a teacher or rival. Because their afflictions are naturally less, they dislike crowds and seek solitude. Because their compassion is less, they are not inclined to benefit others, remaining in a small-minded state. Because their wisdom is more profound than that of the Śrāvakas, they actualize enlightenment by understanding it themselves without needing to be taught by others. \t\t\tRegarding the distinctions of the path: In addition to the sixteen aspects of the Four Noble Truths (such as impermanence), they understand the forward and reverse sequences of the twelve links of dependent origination, and, based on the non-self of persons, they realize the inherent non-existence of apprehended objects. Therefore, it is said that there are distinctions in their level of realization through one and a half types of selflessness. \t\t\tཉ༢ Second, regarding the explanation of the Pratyekabuddha, there are six (points): ཏ༡ The definitive meaning of the term; ཏ༢ The entrance portal; ཏ༣ The precepts to be guarded; ཏ༤ The view to be realized; ཏ༥ The fruit to be attained; ཏ༦ Detailed classification. \t\t\tཏ༡ The first is: \t\t\tMeaning of the term: Not relying on others, self-enlightened. \t\t\tThe meaning of the term Pratyekabuddha is: without relying on other teachers, one actualizes enlightenment by the power of one's own wisdom, hence it is called "self-enlightened." \t\t\tFurthermore, by means of any suitable object of observation, one realizes the wisdom of understanding dependent origination, and thus is also called "condition-realizer," which appears in the commentary to the Sūtra taught by Akṣayamati (Inexhaustible Intelligence). \t\t\tཏ༢ Second, there are: ཐ༡ A general presentation of the entrance portal; ཐ༢ A specific explanation of the method of meditation. \t\t\tཐ༡ The first is: \t\t\tThe entrance portal: taking external cause and effect as an example, \t\t\tThen (understanding) the internal dependent origination in forward and reverse order, self-

The door to entry is through the twelve links of dependent origination. Moreover, regarding the outer dependent origination of both outer and inner, there are causal dependent originations: earth, water, fire, space, and time. Regarding resultant dependent origination, there are: root, trunk, branch, leaf, flower, and fruit. Furthermore, taking as an example the forward process where if there is a cause, the results arise, and the reverse process where if the cause ceases, the results cease. As for inner dependent origination, it is by examining skeletons (corpses). This skeleton arises from old age and death. In that way, gradually understanding up to ignorance, the root of cyclic existence, this is the forward process. By the cessation of ignorance, formations cease, up to old age and death ceasing. Thus, the reverse process of dependent origination is understood. Second part [Specifically explaining the meditation method]: Furthermore, it possesses the two aspects of arising and ceasing of samsara and nirvana. Furthermore, that dependent origination is to meditate on it as possessing the two pairs of arising and ceasing of cyclic existence and nirvana. First, corresponding to the manner of entering cyclic existence by the power of all defilements, it is the sequence as it is: In the sutra it says: "Conditioned by ignorance are formations; conditioned by formations is consciousness," and so forth, up to: "Conditioned by birth are old age and death, sorrow, lamentation, suffering, mental displeasure, and perturbation." "Thus, this great mass of suffering alone arises." (245b) This is how it is taught. The reverse process is the reverse sequence: "Old age and death, etc., arise from birth; birth arises from becoming; becoming arises from grasping," and so forth, up to "formations arise from ignorance." These are merely divided into two parts by sequence, but their actual meaning is identical in generating conviction in the cause and effect of cyclic existence. Second, corresponding to the manner of entering nirvana by the power of purification, it is: The forward sequence is: "If ignorance ceases, formations cease; if formations cease, consciousness ceases," and so forth, up to "if birth ceases, old age and death, etc., cease." The reverse process is: "If birth ceases, old age and death cease; if becoming ceases, birth ceases," and so forth, up to "if ignorance ceases, formations cease." Merely the sequence.
