The fruition-abode, from its basis, enters the Form Realm; Passing away in the intermediate state, or after birth, or ascending upwards; Close-approach to the Formless, seeing peace in this life, and body-actualization. When a non-returner has abandoned the nine grades of defilements of the desire realm, they attain that fruition-abode. There are four types: one who attains close-approach in the Form Realm, one who attains close-approach in the Formless Realm, one who attains peace in this very life, and one who actualizes the body. The first type (close-approach in the Form Realm) has three: passing away in the intermediate state, passing away after birth, and ascending upwards. The first (passing away in the intermediate state) refers to the type of non-returner who, having attained the fruition of a non-returner, passes into Nirvāṇa in the intermediate state of any of the sixteen Form Realm heavens, excluding the Great Brahmā heaven. The second type (passing away after birth) also has three: passing away swiftly, passing away with effort, and passing away without effort. First (passing away swiftly) refers to the type of non-returner who, having been born in any of the sixteen Form Realm heavens, excluding the Great Brahmā heaven, passes into Nirvāṇa simply upon being born. Second (passing away with effort) refers to the type who, having been born in those abodes, passes into Nirvāṇa with diligent effort on the path. Third (passing away without effort) refers to the type who, having been born there and merely entered the path, passes into Nirvāṇa without diligent effort. (243b) The third type (ascending upwards) has two: transference to Akaniṣṭha (Highest of Form Heavens) and transference to the Peak of Existence (Bhāvāgra). The first (transference to Akaniṣṭha) has three: ascending by leaping, ascending by half-leaping, and ascending by complete transference. First (ascending by leaping) refers to the type of non-returner who, in a future birth, is born in the Brahmā realm, and from there leaps directly to Akaniṣṭha and passes into Nirvāṇa. Second (ascending by half-leaping) refers to such a non-returner who, in a future birth, is born in the Brahmā realm, then from there in any of the four Pure Abodes, and then from there in Akaniṣṭha, and passes into Nirvāṇa. Third (ascending by complete transference) refers to such a non-returner who, in a future birth, is born sequentially in all sixteen Form Realm heavens excluding the Great Brahmā heaven, experiences death and rebirth, and finally passes into Nirvāṇa in Akaniṣṭha. The second (transference to the Peak of Existence) refers to such a non-returner who, in a future birth, is born in the Brahmā realm, and from there transfers to the abode of the Peak of Existence (Neither perception nor non-perception) and passes into Nirvāṇa. The second type (close-approach to the Formless Realm) refers to such a non-returner who, in a future birth, is born in any of the first three Formless Realm abodes, and finally passes into Nirvāṇa in the abode of the Peak of Existence. Regarding this, it is also said: 'Wherever one passes away in the Formless Realm, it is there (that Nirvāṇa is attained).'

Although the type that passes away in the intermediate state (of the form realm) does not arise, the three types that pass away after rebirth, the three types that leap up, etc., arise as before (in the realm of non-learners). \t\t\tThird, 'pacified in this very life' refers to the type that attains parinirvana in that very basis (body) upon having obtained the fruition of a non-returner. \t\t\tFourth, 'one who realizes the body' refers to the type that attains parinirvana after having realized the cessation absorption. \t\t\tP4. Fourth, regarding Arhats, there are two: 1. Those who have entered the Arhat path, and 2. Those who dwell in the fruition of Arhatship. \t\t\tP1. First (those who have entered the Arhat path): \t\t\tBecause of abandoning the nine defilements of existence, one enters Arhatship. \t\t\tThat non-returner who has entered (the path) for the purpose of abandoning the nine defilements of existence (244a) is called 'one who has entered the Arhat path'. \t\t\tP2. Second [those who dwell in the fruition of Arhatship]: \t\t\tHaving abandoned those (nine defilements of existence), being liberated from the bonds of the three realms, one dwells in the fruition (of Arhatship). \t\t\tBoth are liberated from the aspect of wisdom; \t\t\t(Differentiated into) those with miraculous powers and higher knowledge (adorned) and those without (unadorned), \t\t\tAnd those with remaining aggregates of clinging and those without. \t\t\tWhen those nine defilements of existence are abandoned, one is liberated from the fetters and bonds of the three realms, and thus enters the fruition of Arhatship. \t\t\tThese can be divided into three types. From the perspective of abandonment (of obscurations), there are 'liberated in both ways' and 'liberated by wisdom.' \t\t\tThe former (liberated in both ways) refers to liberation from both defilement obscurations and obscurations of meditative absorption. \t\t\tThe latter (liberated by wisdom) refers to liberation solely from defilement obscurations. \t\t\tFrom the perspective of qualities, there are 'adorned' (rgyan can), who possess mundane miraculous powers and higher knowledge of their own realm, etc., and 'unadorned' (rgyan med), who do not. \t\t\tFrom the perspective of liberation, there is a distinction between 'Arhat with remainder' (who still has remaining aggregates of clinging, which are causes of suffering) and 'Arhat without remainder' (whose aggregates of clinging, which are causes of suffering, have been exhausted and perfected). \t\t\tN2. Second, 'swift path' and 'sudden realization' are mentioned as supplementary points: \t\t\tThe eight individuals are four pairs of noble beings; \t\t\tThe first and last (pairs) have sudden realization, the middle two have a swift path. \t\t\tThus, in general, the four fruitions (of noble beings) are divided into four pairs of noble individuals, and specifically into two (types) for each, namely those who have entered the path and those who dwell in the fruition, thus they are known as the 'eight individuals'. \t\t\tThe first and last two (pairs) among them have the designation of 'sudden realization', and the middle two have the designation of 'swift path'. The simultaneous abandonment (of defilements) is not found in the Sravakas and common (Mahayana), but in the uncommon Mahayana Dharma...
