[Eighteen Divisions] are: Five, seven, three, three, making eighteen divisions. The manner in which the eighteen divisions arose from the four fundamental schools is stated in the “Wheel of Reading Different Schools” composed by the Acarya Vinītadeva: Dwelling in the East, West, and snowy mountains, The Lokottaravāda (Supra-mundane) school is spoken; And the Prajñaptivāda (Provisional Speech) school, The Mahāsāṃghika (Great Assembly) with five groups and so on; The Mūlasarvāstivāda (Fundamental Sarvāstivāda), And Kāśyapīya (Kasyapa) school and Dharmaguptaka (Dharma Protector) school; The Sautrāntika (Sutra teaching) school, The Bahuśrutīya (Much Hearing), Tamraparṇīya (Red Robe), and Vātsīputrīya (Vatsiputra) disciple schools; And the Vibhajyavāda (Analytic Speech) school, All are the Sarvāstivāda (All-existent). Dwelling in Jetavana, in a fearless place, The Mahāvihāra Sthaviravāda (Great Monastery Elders) school; The Saṃkrāntika (Transmigration) school and Saṃmitīya (Concordant) school, The Vātsīputrīya (Vatsiputra) schools and so on; All honored in three ways, Due to differences in region, meaning, and teachers, Separately eighteen forms are spoken. Thus, the Mahāsāṃghika (Great Assembly) with five branches, the Sarvāstivāda (All-existent) with seven branches, the Sthaviravāda (Elders) with three branches, and the Saṃmitīya (Concordant) with three branches are explained as the eighteen divisions. Although there are indeed differences among them due to their dwelling places, doctrinal interpretations, and the founding teachers they follow, Nevertheless, there is no difference in the path to complete liberation. As stated in the “Sutra of King Kṛki’s Dream Prophecy”: “Great King, the dream you had, where eighteen people divided one piece of cloth, yet the original cloth did not diminish, and each person received a share, is a premonition that the teachings of Śākyamuni (page 241 right) will divide into eighteen schools, but the cloth of liberation will not diminish.” Therefore, it should be understood that there is no superiority or inferiority among them. D3. Third, regarding [Twofold Classification]: N1. The actual twofold classification; N2. Incidental analysis. N1. First (the actual classification) is: Classified into “asserting self” and “asserting no-self.” If the eighteen schools are classified, they are grouped into two: those asserting “self” (ātman) and those asserting “no-self” (anātman). Among these, the five schools within the Saṃmitīya (Concordant) group, such as the Vātsīputrīya (Vatsiputra), assert an inexpressible “self” (ātman). This “self” is the person (Pudgala), which is neither identical to nor different from the aggregates, nor permanent nor impermanent, etc. Although inexpressible, they assert it as an independently existent substance.

Within the Vaibhāṣikas (schools), all other schools and the Sautrāntikas also assert selflessness. That is also as stated in the *Tarka-jvāla* (Burning Logic): Among them, the eight (schools) previously taught, such as the Mahāsāṃghika and others, and subsequently taught schools such as the Sthaviravāda (Theravāda), Sarvāstivāda, Bahuśrutīya, Dharmottarīya, and Kāśyapīya, assert selflessness, meaning they are empty of the self and mine imputed by non-Buddhist tenets; all phenomena are asserted as selfless. The remaining five schools, such as the Vātsīputrīya and others, assert a person (pudgala), saying: "The person (pudgala) is indefinable as either identical with or different from the aggregates, is to be known, and is that which transmigrates in cyclic existence and is fully elucidated." Thus it is taught. Next, the second [subsidiary analysis]: The faults of rejecting Mahayana and asserting truly existent phenomena, and so forth, Other (views) are the accurate tenets of their own schools. As it is stated, these Śrāvaka schools reject the Mahayana because their wisdom, faith, and merit are weak, being unable to comprehend the profound and vast (teachings), and thus are bound by their views. Asserting that ultimate truth is substantially existent, and so forth, are also faults due to not comprehending the profound intent of the scriptures. Therefore, in the *Mahāyāna-sūtrālaṃkāra* (Ornament of the Mahāyāna Sūtras) and other (texts), the establishment of the Mahayana teachings is extensively explained. The Vaibhāṣika's assertion of substantial existence is refuted by the Sautrāntikas, and the Sautrāntika's assertion of nominally existent phenomena is refuted by the Cittamātrins with many scriptural and logical proofs. In particular, the inexpressible self, because its view is extremely inferior, has also been thoroughly refuted in the *Kālacakra Root Tantra* and its commentary, the *Madhyamakāvatāra* (Entering the Middle Way), and other (texts). Although the general presentations of ground, path, and fruition appear to be inconsistent with higher (tenets), they are the faultless tenets of the Śrāvaka's own school, and thus are endowed with good qualities. Third, the third (section), regarding the division based on results, there are two: 1. Brief statement, 2. Extensive explanation. First, the first (brief statement) is: By meditating on the sixteen aspects, one traverses the five paths, By means of the thirty-seven factors of enlightenment, one attains the four types of results. In order to abide in and practice the teachings when the Buddha appeared in the world and expounded the Dharma, first, by observing the precepts of the seven or eight types of Pratimokṣa vows, from a qualified spiritual friend, (one studies) the nine branches of scripture that accord with the Śrāvaka tradition, which are comprised within the Three Piṭakas...
