They assert that knowledge is merely something unestablished. And, just as if one is not clear, others cannot be clear, they assert that consciousness has two types of experience: self-awareness (introspection), which looks inward, and other-awareness (extrospection), which looks outward. Furthermore, just as the colors appearing in clear crystal are the essence of the crystal, they assert that self-awareness is characterized by the clear apprehension of objects that share the same essence as oneself, and object-awareness is merely an imputation. They also assert that the three times (past, present, future) are not substantially established but are entities imputed by the mind. And so forth, from within their (teachings): They assert that there is no absolute negation that eliminates all abandonments by an antidote, referring to the nirvanas with residue and without residue. They assert that Arhats can fall from the meditative absorption of dwelling in happiness in this very life, and thus are called "prone to fall," but they do not assert that they fall from the fruit (of arhatship). And because the truth of cessation, like form and feeling, has no intrinsic nature, and like the eye etc., its efficacy is not observed by valid cognition; and because the sutras (239b) speak of separation, exhaustion, disappearance, and cessation, they assert that it (cessation) is non-existent. They assert that this is merely the negation of the self of persons. This philosophical system is also based on the sutras, the teachings of the Victorious One, and is asserted by great venerable ones such as Saṃgharakṣita (Gendün Sung) and Śrīlāta (Pel Len), etc. For details, one should understand it from the auto-commentary on the Abhidharmakośa. II. Classification by way of schools, there are three: 1. The four fundamental schools; 2. The eighteen branched schools; 3. The summarization into two. I. The first is: The fundamental school of Sarvastivada asserts all exist, Mostly the four of Sthaviravada, Mahasamghika, and the Honored by Many. Among the Sravaka schools, although there are many classifications and summaries, such as one, two, or three, according to the assertions of individual masters, commonly there are four fundamental schools: Sarvastivada, Mahasanghika, Sthaviravada, and Sammitiya (Honored by Many). Regarding the school called Sarvastivada, it is renowned because it is the basis of all schools and asserts that the five bases of knowledge are substantially existent. This school recites the scriptures in Sanskrit. Its lineage originated from the master Rahula (Sgra Gcan 'Dzin), who was of royal lineage and revered learning. Their monastic robes (saṃghāṭī) have nine to twenty-five strips, marked with a wheel and a lotus. Their names end with "Śrī," "Bhadra," and "Garbha." Their philosophical tenet is that the three times (past, present, future) are substantially existent.

and they assert that all conditioned phenomena are momentary, there is no self of persons, and Buddhahood is attained through three immeasurable eons, and so forth. “Mahāsāṃghika” (Great Assembly School) is so named because at the time of the schism, the majority of the Sangha remained in one place. This school uses Prakrit, the natural language. Its abbot, the supreme one of brahmin lineage, abiding in purified virtues, was Mahākāśyapa. The marks on the seven to twenty-three strips of their robe (240a) are the auspicious knot (śrīvatsa). Their names end in “Jnana” (knowledge) and “Gupta” (hidden/protected). Their tenets assert that the self and aggregates are distinct, the truths are seen simultaneously, even one who has attained the supreme Dharma can fall, and the sense faculties do not apprehend objects, etc. “Sthaviravāda” (Elders' School) is so named because it asserts itself to be the lineage of the noble Elders (Sthaviras). This school uses Piśācī, the language of flesh-eaters/ghouls. Its abbot, the supreme one of the bamboo weaver's lineage who pacifies the borderlands, was Katyāyana. The marks on the five to twenty-one strips of their robe are a conch. Their names end in “Udbhava” (origin) and “Varman” (armor). Their tenets assert that the Buddha did not teach in Sanskrit, there is mind in the meditative equipoise of cessation, there is no wrong knowledge, and Buddhahood is attained through any number of immeasurable eons between ten and thirty, etc. “Bahuśrutīya” (Much-Learned School) is so named because their teachers are revered and honored by many people. This school uses Apabhraṃśa, a degenerated language/dialect. Its abbot, the supreme upholder of the Vinaya, of the barber's lineage, was Upāli. Their robe is similar to that of the Sthaviravāda. Their names end in “Praja” (subjects/people) and “Gaṇa” (assembly/group). Their tenets assert that there is an ineffable self, all knowable things are subsumed under two These schools also have different ways of reciting the Prātimokṣa Sūtra, and their systems of precepts and transgressions are also distinct. There are also accounts stating that the Mahāsāṃghika school is the fundamental basis. The change of names applies to the present, not to ancient rituals. The distinctions in robes and marks, etc., are said to originate from the teachings of Jowo Je (Atisha) (240b). Moreover, since in the fourth chapter of the Later Guhyasamāja Tantra, the four wheels are linked with the four schools, and in the Kālacakra, the four schools are taught from the four faces, this view that there are four fundamental schools has strong scriptural authority.
