The foundation, the path truths, and unconditioned phenomena are the general characteristics of undefiled dharmas. Regarding the way the two truths are established, From the Abhidharma Kosha: That which, when broken or by other means, Is analyzed away, and the mind does not engage with it, Like a vase and water, conventionally exists. Ultimate existence is otherwise. Meaning: Any phenomenon which, when analyzed by an analyzer or when other parts are excluded by an excluding mind, allows the mind apprehending it to be abandoned, is conventional truth. For instance, coarse phenomena such as the container world and its contents possess spatial parts, and their other parts can be mentally excluded, thus they are illusory. Similarly, the continuums conceptually posited in the three times, such as years, months, and days, are also not truly existent because they can be divided into parts. These conventionally existing phenomena are not ultimately efficacious. However, that which, when its parts are excluded, the mind apprehending it cannot be abandoned, such as a subtle atom (paramanu) – which has no spatial parts and thus truly exists as a constituent of phenomena – and also the inner apprehending mind, whose momentary temporal continuum exists as an agent of action, this is ultimate truth. These ultimately existing phenomena, in themselves, are ultimately efficacious. The reason why vases and so forth are conventional is that vases and so forth are not ultimately efficacious. If it is asserted that ultimately, an object (artha) is efficacious by its own nature, meaning it produces its own unmistaken apprehending self-characteristic, then vases and so forth are conventional because they are minds dependent on internal components such as designations (brda) and so on. (page 237, front) The way conditioned phenomena arise, or their results, are mostly similar. In general, the self-characteristics of mind and mental factors are merely apprehending the essence and specific qualities of objects; the arising of compounded physical forms (rupa) is from the four great elements (earth, water, fire, wind) and their changes; the substantial nature of consciousness is its concomitance with the five pervasive mental factors (feeling, discrimination, volition, contact, attention); and unassociated compounded phenomena arise as temporary entities from physical forms and mind. These are the ways conditioned phenomena arise. In the context of paths and fruits: regarding the object, the general characteristics of the Four Noble Truths of what to adopt and reject, and their primary specific characteristics; regarding the subjective aspect, there are the five paths: the path of accumulation, the path of preparation, the path of seeing, the path of meditation, and the path of no more learning; and the enumeration of the four pairs of noble beings and the eight individuals (four stream-enterers, once-returners, non-returners, and arhats, each with their respective path of entry and fruit), and most of their abandoned defilements and realized wisdoms; also, the way a Bodhisattva first generates bodhicitta, the way they accumulate merit in between, and finally the way they attain complete enlightenment. Among these, the last existent, Prince Siddhartha Gautama,

Even though the accumulations of three immeasurable aeons were perfected, ordinary individuals on the path of accumulation still possessed all fetters; they did not assert Buddhahood in Akaniṣṭha. Therefore, at dusk, under the Bodhi tree, thirty-seven kotis of māra armies were subdued. From the moment of the dawn's application path (prayoga-mārga) in a single meditative state, all abandonments and realizations, from the knowledge of cessation (kṣayajñāna) to the knowledge of non-arising (anutpādajñāna), were attained solely through the path of realizing the sixteen aspects, such as the four noble truths and impermanence. Prior to this, they received instructions on worldly meditations from Dirghaprahatana and Adhicāra, thereby being freed from attachment, being Buddhas who had previously eradicated attachment. Similarly, the manner of establishing the abandonments and realizations of the twenty saṃghas, and the manner of their decline, apart from minor details, are largely similar. Also, most of the qualities of the four dhyānas, the four formless attainments, (237b) the four immeasurable thoughts, and so forth, and that even on the Buddha-bhūmi, there are still the aggregates of fruition (vipāka-skandha) propelled by past karma and the remnants of defiled karma, which constitute the truth of suffering. The śrāvakas, pratyekabuddhas, and Buddhas, who attain complete nirvana where their consciousness ceases like a fire whose fuel is exhausted, are also considered to be in agreement. Secondly, there are two differing views: 1. Vaibhāṣika, and 2. Sautrāntika. First is: The Vaibhāṣikas consider the seven Abhidharma treatises to be the Buddha's word. Indivisible atoms, with intervening space. Homogenous actions performed together, like a patch of green grass. The sense faculties perceive objects, and consciousness apprehends them. The grasped and the grasping, cause and effect, mostly arise simultaneously. If we summarize the differences in doctrines between the Vaibhāṣika and Sautrāntika schools, which appear extensively in the Abhidharmakośa, the Vaibhāṣikas consider the seven Abhidharma treatises to be the Buddha's direct teachings, as stated in the sūtras, similar to the Udānavarga, compiled by individual Arhats, and thus they are the word of the Buddha. They assert that the dharma aggregates, such as the sūtras, are subsumed by the non-associated formations (viprayukta-saṃskāra) in the chain of nominal concepts. Those subsumed by form (rūpa) are the primary elements (mahābhūta) and derivative forms (upādāya-rūpa), or composed of subtle atoms (paramāṇu). When subtle atoms form gross matter, the central atom is surrounded by six other atoms, and these indivisible atoms, scattered space, and intervals are considered to exist substantially. Homogenous actions are performed together, like a yak's tail and a patch of green grass.
