“It is merely the aggregates that have no agent.” As stated thus, the mind that grasps at a self of persons arises by focusing merely on the continuity of the aggregates. Here, mainly by the statements in texts like the *Ornament for the Mahayana Sutras* and the *Lankavatara Sutra*, the assertion that Sravakas and Pratyekabuddhas do not realize the selflessness of phenomena (dharma-anatman) is intended to mean that they have not directly realized it through meditation. However, some assert that they (Sravakas and Pratyekabuddhas) realize both types of selflessness. This is intended to mean that their awareness, gained through hearing, contemplation, and familiarity, serves as an aid in abandoning the afflictions that operate within the three realms. Therefore, the assertion that Sravakas and Pratyekabuddhas realize the selflessness of phenomena is the view of Nagarjuna and his spiritual sons (his disciples). And the assertion that they do not realize it is the intention of Asanga and his brother (Vasubandhu). Some Tibetan scholars assert that Sravakas and Pratyekabuddhas realize both types of selflessness. [Ta 5] Fifth, the fruit to be attained: Nirvana, the nature of non-arising, is unconditioned. Non-affirming negation and affirming negation are asserted by Vaibhashikas and Sautrantikas. Nirvana with remainder is conditioned; unconditioned (making a total of) eighty-nine (dharmas). The four fruits, and nirvana without remainder, (bring about) cessation. Although the fruit to be attained by all three vehicles is equally nirvana, here (it refers to) the nirvana of cessation. Its essence, from the commentary on the *Sixty Verses on Reasoning*, states: “However, that which is the non-re-arising of the essence of things characterized as form and so forth, due to the non-completion of causes and conditions, karma and afflictions, that is nirvana.” This is asserted in accordance with the prior presentation of the Sravaka view. Furthermore, among the two, conditioned and unconditioned, it is the unconditioned. Regarding this, some Vaibhashikas (Sarvastivadins) assert three unconditioned phenomena. The Vaibhashikas of the Central Land (Madhyadesha) assert four, by adding suchness (Tathata). Among these four, the Vibhajyavadin (or Vaibhashika) asserts that nirvana with remainder is analytical cessation (pratisaṁkhyā-nirodha), and nirvana without remainder is non-analytical cessation (apratisaṁkhyā-nirodha). The Sautrantika asserts that the absence of afflictions is analytical cessation, and the absence of aggregates is non-analytical cessation, as explained in the *Clear Exposition of the Sage's Intention*. Although both (referring to the two cessations mentioned) are in agreement as unconditioned, the distinction is that the Vaibhashika asserts it as non-affirming negation, and the Sautrantika asserts it as affirming negation, as explained in the *Abhidharmakosha-bhashya*. The meaning of these (schools) is also: Vaibhashikas are those who assert substantial existence, meaning they assert the existence of actual things (dharmas). The Sautrantika, on the other hand, are those who assert non-substantial existence, meaning they assert (that things are...)

Wishing for no remainder. Herein, it is set forth as two: with remainder and without remainder. "With remainder" means: although defilements are completely abandoned, the continuum of the aggregates is not severed. This also refers to the eighty-nine conditioned phenomena and eighty-nine unconditioned phenomena, or the four fruits of a renunciant. "Without remainder" means: the Arhat who has completely abandoned defilements, having given up the formation of life, the continuum of the aggregates is severed, so that not even a slight remainder of suffering or the aggregates remains (235b), like a lamp extinguishing. Both schools of the Śrāvaka tradition assert that after an Arhat passes away, the subsequent consciousness does not reconnect. T6. The Sixth, Classification, has three parts: Th1. By way of philosophical tenets. Th2. By way of schools. Th3. By way of results. Th1. The First has two parts: D1. Actual classification. D2. Stating its tenets. D1. The First is: The tenets are Vaibhāṣika and Sautrāntika. Although in the Śrāvaka vehicle there are many subtle differences in philosophical tenets posited by their respective aspirations, broadly speaking, based on the principal ones, it emerges as two: Vaibhāṣika and Sautrāntika. Furthermore, according to Sthavira Jang Zang, they are called so because they assert that the three times exist substantially, or because they assert in accordance with the great commentary (Vibhāṣā). And it is said that they are a branch of the Sarvāstivāda school among the various schools. As for Sautrāntika, the aforementioned (Jang Zang) states: these accept the sūtras like the *Six Gates* and *Noble Good Conduct* literally and follow those sūtras, hence they are Sautrāntika. Their other name is "Dpe ston pa" (Illustrator/Exemplifier) because they are skilled in illustrating with examples. D2. The second, stating the tenets, has two parts: N1. Shared tenets. N2. Unshared tenets. N1. The first is: Commonly they do not accept Mahāyāna scriptures. Having abandoned the permanent, singular self, they assert a doer in action. Both Śrāvaka schools commonly state and do not accept that the Mahāyāna scriptures, specifically the Middle and Final Turnings of the Wheel of Dharma, are the Buddha's word. This is because, for example, the enjoyment body (Saṃbhogakāya) perpetually abides, and Bodhisattvas go to higher realms. As it is said: non-self most
