should be known. The extensive explanation of these will appear below in the section on explaining the path. 3. Third, the general characteristics are briefly presented in four aspects: 1. Suffering; 2. Origin; 3. Cessation; 4. Path. 1. The first is: Impermanent, suffering, empty, selfless. If the general characteristics of the Truth of Suffering are summarized, there are four: impermanence, suffering, emptiness, and selflessness. Among these, whatever is a conditioned phenomenon has the characteristic of impermanence; whatever is impermanent has the characteristic of suffering; whatever is suffering has the characteristic of emptiness; whatever is empty has the characteristic of selflessness. Thus, yogis should analyze in these four ways. The definition or meaning of these four, from the Commentary on the Abhidharmakośa: 'Among these, because it is dependent on conditions, it is impermanent. Because it is of the nature of harm, it is suffering. Because it is devoid of the opposing factor of grasping at 'mine', it is empty. Because it is devoid of the opposing factor of grasping at 'self', it is selfless.' So it is said. When these four aspects are understood, they become antidotes to the views of permanence, happiness, 'mine', and 'self'. 2. Second, [the Truth of Origin] is: Cause, origin, arising, and condition. The general characteristics of the Truth of Origin are four: cause, origin, arising, and condition. Among these, karma and afflictions, because they are the effective cause for establishing the latent imprints and seeds for future rebirth in samsara, have the characteristic of a cause; The karmic imprints accumulated by sentient beings, because they are the effective cause for sentient beings of the six realms (such as gods) to arise in those respective realms with similar forms and types, have the characteristic of an origin; Their respective causes definitively arise differently, and in different destinies (rebirths) and birthplaces, they arise and proceed in various ways, even up to the peak of existence (samsara's highest point), because they are the effective cause for the supreme arising of existence, they have the characteristic of arising; Because they are the effective cause for attaining bodies other than those previously attained, and for passing into bodies other than those already attained, they have the characteristic of a condition; these are what should be known logically. The definition of these four

Thus, in the Abhidharmakośa-bhāṣya, it is stated: By way of the nature of seed, it is the 'cause'; by way of the nature of arising, it is the 'origin' (of suffering); by way of the nature of connection, it is 'thorough arising'; by way of the nature of manifest accomplishment, it is the 'condition'. (233b) For example, just as a pot is manifestly accomplished from the aggregation of clay, ash, a wheel, thread, and water, so it is. These (definitions) also serve as antidotes to wrong views previously adopted and practiced, such as 'causelessness', 'single cause', and 'changing cause'. Third, [Cessation] is: Cessation is peace, excellence, definite emergence. The general characteristics of Cessation are four: cessation, peace, excellence, and definite emergence. Among these, cessation is characterized by being free from the various afflictions which are the causes for the arising of suffering. Peace is characterized by being free from the disturbing formations, which are the aggregates that are the proximate causes of suffering. Excellence is characterized by being pure due to freedom from afflictions, and by being an entity of bliss due to freedom from suffering. Definite emergence is characterized by being the basis for benefiting others, being permanent because one does not turn back, and ultimately virtuous. The etymological meanings of these four, as stated in the Abhidharmakośa-bhāṣya, are: 'Cessation' (འགོག་པ་) is so called because there is no connection and the connection is destroyed; 'Peace' (ཞི་བ་) is so called because it is free from the three characteristics of compounded phenomena; 'Excellence' (གྱ་ནོམ) is so called because it is virtuous; 'Definite Emergence' (ངེས་འབྱུང་) is so called because it is the supreme object of reliance. By contemplating these four, one (counters the wrong view that) there is no liberation; (understands that) liberation is from suffering; the bliss of meditative absorption is excellence; and definite emergence (counters the wrong view that) liberation is not permanent. Fourth, [Path] is: Path is reason, accomplishment, and definite extraction (or discernment) as general characteristics. The general characteristics of the path are four: path, reason, accomplishment, and definite extraction. Among these, path is characterized by seeking and realizing the true meaning of the Dharmadhātu, being derived from the root 'Mārga' meaning 'to seek'. (234a) Reason is characterized by acting as an antidote to unreasonableness and afflictions. Accomplishment is characterized by reversing perverted views such as clinging to compounded phenomena as permanent, etc., and then that very...
