What is it? The truth of cessation should also be understood as taught through characteristics, profundity, convention, ultimate truth (231b), incompleteness, completeness, unadorned, adorned, with remainder, without remainder, superior, and its various aspects. As such, it is extensively explained through twelve doors, but here it will be briefly explained. Then, how is it explained by characteristics? Cessation refers to cessation on the suchness of the dharma-nature, cessation by the undefiled path, and the non-arising and cessation of afflictions to be abandoned. This includes the basis in which cessation occurs, the means by which cessation occurs, and what is to be ceased. In short, the characteristic of cessation is the cessation of adventitious defilements by meditating on the path, based on the dharma-sphere that is primordially pure by nature. Then, how is it explained by profundity? It should not be said that this cessation is separate from the entity that is a non-affirming negation of the destruction of those defiled compounded phenomena. If it were separate, the phenomenon and its nature would become unrelated. Nor should it be said that it is not separate, for their characteristics are not alike. If they were alike, cessation would also become thoroughly defiled. Nor should it be said that it is both, for the faults would apply to both. Nor should it be said that it is neither, for it is to be individually realized, and thus not utterly non-existent. Why should it not be done thus? Because the truth of cessation is the realm free from all elaborations of the four extremes. (232b) Then, how is it explained by convention? It is the cessation that arises when the seeds of what is to be abandoned are diminished and suppressed by the worldly path. Even this much is referred to as cessation, understanding that it belongs to an aspect of that complete cessation. Thus, it is taught as attaining nirvana by its part or aspect. Then, how is it explained by ultimate truth? It is the cessation that arises when the seeds of what is to be abandoned are completely destroyed by the supramundane wisdom of the noble ones, in a manner of not arising again. Then, how is it explained by incompleteness? It is the cessation of all defilements to be abandoned by seeing, as included in the result of a stream-enterer; or the cessation of the six defilements to be abandoned by meditation in the desire realm, as included in the result of a once-returner; or...

The cessation that encompasses all meditated abandonments of the desire realm, achieved by the Anāgāmin (Non-Returner) fruit, also refers to the cessation of the Noble Ones who are still in training. What, then, is completeness? It is the cessation that encompasses the complete eradication of all abandonments for the Noble Ones who are beyond training (Arhats), achieved by the Arhat fruit. What, then, is unadorned? It is the cessation of those Arhats who are liberated from defilement obscurations merely by wisdom, meaning they lack adornments such as supernormal cognitive powers. What, then, is adorned? It is the cessation of those Arhats who are liberated from both defilement obscurations and meditative absorption obscurations, possessing the three knowledges: knowledge of death and rebirth, knowledge of former and latter extremes, and knowledge of the exhaustion of defilements, along with the eight qualities including the six supernormal cognitive powers. What, then, is with remainder? It is the cessation where, although all defilements are abandoned, the life-span has not yet transferred, and there remain the five aggregates of the desire and form realms, or the four aggregates of the formless realm, as a remainder of previous karma. What, then, is without remainder? It is the cessation where all defilements are abandoned, and the life-span has transferred, thus there are no remaining aggregates of karmic retribution. What, then, is especially sublime? It is the cessation that encompasses the Nirvāṇa of Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, who, relying on wisdom and compassion, do not abide in either extreme of existence (Saṃsāra) or quiescence (Nirvāṇa), because it serves as the proximate cause for the ultimate benefit and temporary happiness of all sentient beings. What, then, are the synonyms? It is that which possesses various synonyms such as 'complete abandonment', 'definite abandonment', 'purification', 'exhaustion', 'detachment', 'cessation', 'perfect quiescence', and 'disappearance'. Four: The Truth of the Path to be Relied Upon: The path, by which one enters and attains the supreme state, Is encompassed by the Path of Accumulation, Preparation, Seeing, Meditation, and No More Learning. That method which, by relying upon it or entering it, accomplishes the state of Nirvāṇa, is the essence of the path. Although there are many classifications and explanations from the Great and Lesser Vehicles, all are encompassed by the five paths: the Path of Accumulation, the Path of Preparation, the Path of Seeing, the Path of Meditation, and the Path of No More Learning.
