Thirdly, there are three types of frivolous speech, such as truthful frivolous speech like teaching Dharma to unsuitable recipients. Among frivolous speech, distracting those who seek Dharma is the greatest sin. These are the four types of verbal actions. Covetousness: Its basis is, others' external and internal possessions. Its intention is, the motivation of hoping and longing for others' prosperity and resources. Its application is, repeatedly thinking about it. Its defilement is, the three poisons, with desire as the fulfilling factor. Its final outcome is, repeatedly performing this action, abandoning shame and embarrassment, and not applying antidotes. Classifying this, there are three types: coveting one's own things, such as attachment to one's own lineage; coveting others' things, such as attachment to others' prosperity; and coveting things belonging to neither, such as longing for underground treasures. Among covetousness, coveting the gains of renunciation is the greatest sin. Maliciousness: Its basis is, as before. Its intention is, the motivation to cause harm such as killing and beating. Its application is, the state of continuously thinking about it. Its defilement is, the three poisons, with hatred as the fulfilling factor. Its final outcome is, seeing it as a virtue and having no desire to apply antidotes. Classifying this, there are three types: maliciousness arising from hatred, such as the desire to kill others in battle; maliciousness arising from jealousy, such as ill-will towards rivals; and maliciousness arising from resentment, such as harboring ill-will even if the aggressor submits again. Among maliciousness, setting up harm for those without limits (i.e., those for whom causing harm leads to immediate suffering, such as one's parents or Arhats) is the greatest sin. Wrong Views: Its basis is, virtuous and non-virtuous phenomena. Its intention is, motivations of wrong views such as believing that good and evil do not exist, or that cause and effect are inverted. Its application is, the state of repeatedly thinking about it. Its defilement is, among the three poisons, ignorance is the fulfilling factor. Its final outcome is, this action is completed, and there are no antidotes. Classifying this, there are three types: wrong view regarding karma, such as not believing that good and bad deeds are causes of happiness and suffering; wrong view regarding the truths, such as not wishing to attain the truth of cessation even after practicing the truth of the path; and wrong view regarding the Three Jewels, such as slandering the Three Jewels. Among wrong views, holding one's own views as supreme...

The sin is great. There are also three types of results of those [actions]. The ripening result (vipaka) is when a small cause results in the ripening of a great fruit. It is called this because the cause cannot even represent a fraction of the fruit when it ripens. Likewise, (229a) regarding the non-virtuous actions propelled by strong motivation: if committed greatly, their result is hell; if committed moderately, hungry ghosts; if committed slightly, it propels one to be reborn as an animal. As for the result similar to the cause and the dominant result, they will ripen even in the abodes of higher realms. Regarding results similar to the cause, there are two: the active similar-to-the-cause result and the experiential similar-to-the-cause result. The first is when one is naturally inclined and takes pleasure in performing those very actions propelled by previous karma. The second is from *The Precious Garland*: By killing, life will be short. By harming, much suffering is encountered. By stealing, wealth will be impoverished. By sexual misconduct, enemies will arise. By lying, one will be slandered. By divisive speech, friends will separate. By harsh words, unpleasant sounds will be heard. By meaningless speech, one's words will lack authority. Envy destroys hopes in the mind. Malice is said to inflict fear. Wrong views lead to bad views themselves. As it appears. The dominant result is that which ripens in the external environment. Also from that very [text, *The Precious Garland*]: Externally, glory is small, and harms are many. Dust accumulates, foul odors, high and low [ground]. Salty soil, desolate, and perverse [land]. Fruits are small, their opening narrow, or non-existent. As it is stated. The order of ripening of those results is also stated in the *Abhidharmakosha Commentary*: Which karma is heavy in samsara, Which is near [to death], and which is habitual, Which was done first, of those karmas, The former ones ripen first. As it appears. Not only are the ten non-virtuous actions perfected as a path of action when performed by oneself, but if the intention and application are similar, when one person commits the act of killing within a gathering of an army, the path of action will be perfected for everyone assembled there. In the *Abhidharmakosha* (229b) it is stated: For the sake of a single purpose, such as an army, All possess the quality of the doer. This is a definite karma, thus, for the purpose of taking what is not given, such as robbery and so forth...
